Madonna In Givenchy – 2013 Met Gala

madonna

Like Beyonce Knowles and Florence Welch, Madonna also trotted out Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci for the 2013 Met Gala on Monday at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

However, unlike Bey and Flo, Madge put on a full-fledged costume for the Costume Institute Benefit. She may have arrived late to the red carpet, but she wasn’t going unnoticed.

The singer threw caution to the wind and channeled her inner wild-child and sent out a rebel yell with this pants-less get-up that delivered every touchstone of punk imaginable.

The studs, the spikes and the chains all came out to play. So did the plaid. Grommets and gloves were present and accounted for, right along with grungy ripped fishnet tights and a visible lace bra.

Did I miss anything? Oh, yes. The dog collar choker and locket, and the hot pink Casedei ankle-strap pumps. And, of course, there was the shock-and-awe factor that’s so crucial in chaotic punk style.

To top it all off? A short black Cleopatra wig. She should have done a mohawk.

Yes, it is completely ridiculous. Like beyond ridiculous. But I would’ve been able to appreciate it for what it was, had it not been for her hot pink Casedei ankle-strap pumps. What a poor choice of shoe.

Talk about not fully committing to her look.

  2. Yeliz May 7, 2013 at 05:04 #

Worst look of the night and a WDOTY contender.

    • Milla B. May 7, 2013 at 05:58 #

      A WDOTY contender for sure.

  3. Christine May 7, 2013 at 05:04 #

Um, I have no clue where to begin. A bit speechless. I do give her major props for sticking with the theme. But um.

  4. Giuseppi Giraffe May 7, 2013 at 05:11 #

Oh dear oh dear. Every time I see her, I’m overwhelmed by the desperate cries of “I’m still young! I’m still edgy!” I’m actually starting to feel sorry for her, it’s so pitiful. This might have worked for an eighteen year old, minus the shoes or the dog collar or with the addition of some pants or something, but on her it is pitiful.

      ^^ times a thousand.

    • ChannelChanel May 7, 2013 at 16:08 #

Oh please, so ageist. She still looks good, so why not flaunt it? Who cares about age? At least she’s having fun rather than just criticizing people and forcing people to fit into social norms…Ummm, this is Madonna. I don’t think she cares at all. What could be more punk than an IDGAF attitude lol?

    • Quinn May 7, 2013 at 22:11 #

      I agree!!!!!!!

    • TeaAtTwo May 8, 2013 at 15:45 #

If this were on Cher I’d think ‘you go girl’ but on Madonna it feels forced and staged.

  5. Brent May 7, 2013 at 05:12 #

The theme was “punk chaos” and she hit that theme right on the nail. She worked that look! She is one of the last living punk icons from the 80′s and she gave it to us. She rocked this Red Carpet and I give her a A+ for the look! This is the reason why she is inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!

    • Fashionmint May 7, 2013 at 07:03 #

      +1

    • Beta May 7, 2013 at 08:57 #

agree, I mean, given the theme I prefer the wildness of thisto JLaw’s lady look

    • Shantal May 7, 2013 at 15:52 #

+ 1 Agree very much. One of the few that actually did the theme.

    • anjos May 7, 2013 at 17:06 #

Agreed. And I’m not even a fan of hers by any means.

Kinda tired of all the agism tbh. People putting down women for how they’re dressed, having fun with fashion, etc. just because they’re not 18 anymore. Young stars that play too safe and always dress too old for their age are much bigger problem in my book.

    • Dhppy May 9, 2013 at 20:39 #

Her look made me so happy. Finally someone went all in and embraced the theme completely. I wish more stars had her guts that night and saved their pretty dresses for Cannes.

    • Larson December 18, 2013 at 13:58 #

Everybody hates her and I don’t like her, but it was a perfect look.

  6. Lyo May 7, 2013 at 05:13 #

Ow, had she actually put some pants on…

  7. AG May 7, 2013 at 05:15 #

This has the be the very definition of trying too hard. The worst part is her smug expression.

  8. AG May 7, 2013 at 05:15 #

  9. helene May 7, 2013 at 05:20 #

    A fashion disaster!

  10. BeatofA May 7, 2013 at 05:21 #

This was awesome….only someone as rich and powerful as Madonna could of pulled this off…look at those pins!

    • Valeria May 8, 2013 at 04:02 #

I agree. She is powerful and she is workin the hell out of this look. Just because Rosie Huntington-Whitley put some sheer Gucci on or Jessica Alba had snakes on her ears doesn’t make them look theme-appropriate. Madonna and Christina Ricci are my favorites of the night

  11. LM May 7, 2013 at 05:41 #

Call it a fashion disaster, but this is actually more punk than anything on the red carpet.

    • Fiona May 7, 2013 at 09:56 #

Agree – at least she had fun with the theme, but she does take it from gala them to costume party somewhat.

  12. Stephanie May 7, 2013 at 05:43 #

I actually thought it was pretty cool until the shoes

  13. Markness May 7, 2013 at 05:56 #

To be honest, she was my best dressed. I see the other looks can be worn in other red carpet occasions but only Madonna dares to be different. I guess after scrolling this page with a lot of gowns and dresses. This was a breath of fresh air. SHE’S my BDOTW in a Heartbeat and others don’t stand a ray of light chance on her. :)

  14. Prudence May 7, 2013 at 06:05 #

yesss girll!! we needed someone to bring her punk a game since everyone else played it so safe! before you judge this look do not forget where she is and the theme of the event!!!

  15. Brazilian fan May 7, 2013 at 06:09 #

They should arrest Madonna for such a crime….what a hell is that….

  16. Liz May 7, 2013 at 07:03 #

Madonna wins hands down. The theme was Punk:Chaos 2 Couture. She was the only one brave enough to embrace the true meaning of punk/couture. She looked fantastic on the red carpet!

  17. Rena May 7, 2013 at 07:04 #

Madonna totally stole the show. Love it!

  18. Bré May 7, 2013 at 07:22 #

Madonna is giving me life! Queen of punk!

  19. mandy May 7, 2013 at 07:22 #

Waist up i can love this. Waist down and its street walker.

  20. Gabby M May 7, 2013 at 08:36 #

I dont get it. I mean the pink pumps… if u wanted to wear them so badly why didnt you wear hot pink accesories, they just look awkward. also get rid of the black thigh highs, just shouldve kept with the fishnets…

  21. Charlotte May 7, 2013 at 08:42 #

    This woman is so ridiculous.

  22. noo May 7, 2013 at 08:43 #

God bless Madge! She is not afraid to go all the way! On any day I would find this scary but she gets my full support for this incredibly daring look and she’s one of my best dressed!

  23. Alicat May 7, 2013 at 09:58 #

Congratulations to her for really taking on the theme in its truest sense. It is not the prettiest nor most elegant look by a long shot, but since when did punk have anything to do with prettiness and elegance? I love all the elements, especially the pink shoes which jar with everything else. What fun!!!!!

    • Markness May 8, 2013 at 02:24 #

You nailed it! So true! I think people have now thought of red carpet dressing as a science. Like wearing this is unfashionable, and wearing this is fashionable. When it’s not. That’s why it was more fun in the 80′s where people thought of fashion as fun. Now, it’s just people saying you look bad all the time. Besides, it’s Madonna. She’s never afraid of going over the top.

  24. Jimmy May 7, 2013 at 10:04 #

Madonna looked incredible! She totally hit the theme and was my favorite of the night. Daring and fearless just like Punk should be…

  25. naomie May 7, 2013 at 10:07 #

    Good lord
    :(((((((((((((

  26. Lee Ann May 7, 2013 at 10:29 #

She has morhed into Hilary Devey from Dragons Den

  27. Jess2 May 7, 2013 at 11:33 #

I get that it is on point theme wise, but this is just OTT and a bit tragic.

  28. Rashmi May 7, 2013 at 11:35 #

She took the theme to the last possible level! :D

  29. Jones19 May 7, 2013 at 13:12 #

You gotta love Madonna. She’s pushing so many boundaries, especially the age boundary! Who says that women over 50 have to be and dress a certain way? Madonna is a living legend and she can do whatever the hell she wants. Love her.

  30. Pedro May 7, 2013 at 14:17 #

    AMAZING!

    Fearless and bold

  31. dee May 7, 2013 at 14:20 #

She definitely is punk but I am not feeling this.

  32. EmmaWoodhouse May 7, 2013 at 14:46 #

This is VERY punk but I loathe it. It’s very trashy–I think it’s all chaos and no couture (despite being Givenchy). WDOTY contender in my book.

  33. Moxie May 7, 2013 at 15:36 #

Punk, but not chic. Much too trashy looking.

  34. glenn May 7, 2013 at 16:51 #

I think she try to have fun, yes it’s vulgar, but it’s madonna, you just never know what to expect

  35. robbie May 7, 2013 at 17:51 #

HOT and MESS come to mind.

  36. Pam May 7, 2013 at 19:03 #

    Just stop it.

  37. Liz May 7, 2013 at 19:17 #

YES!!! Someone who definitely understood the theme and WENT WITH IT! She was also a favorite of mine. It’s a COSTUME gala, so thank goodness Madonna (and a few others) had fun with it.

  38. Parvati May 8, 2013 at 01:03 #

    Ridiculous. Enough said.

  39. Angela May 8, 2013 at 05:19 #

I feel as though she doesn’t even deserve attention anymore. All of this is a hot prostitute mess.

  40. Dell May 8, 2013 at 07:25 #

I don’t think I’m qualified to tell Madonna what’s punk and what’s not, haha. If she likes it, I love it.

I really do think she looks great. It’s a COSTUME Gala; you’re not supposed to be balanced or “hit all the right notes” as much as you’re supposed to interpret the theme. That’s all this event and its red carpet are supposed to be about.

  41. George May 11, 2013 at 05:13 #

Ugliest creation EVER! Worse dressed EVER! I think I’m gonna puke for a while.

  42. Danny January 13, 2014 at 20:37 #

anybody knows if shoes are also Givenchy or some other brand
They screwed the look, but i really like them otherwise
