Nicole Kidman turned more than a few heads at Derby Day held at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday afternoon as she channelled Audrey Hepburn.
The actress, who I was delighted to see having fun with fashion, wore a white lace L’Wren Scott dress with black-and-white striped ribbon and bow detail which evoked Eliza Doolittle’s Royal Ascot debut in the classic 1964 movie ‘My Fair Lady’ starring Hepburn.
Nicole’s L’Wren Scott dress, which was made to The Green Carpet Challenge’s specifications and strictly adhered to the traditional Derby Day colour code of black-and-white, was styled with a broad-brimmed hat designed by milliner Stephen Jones to completed the reinterpretation of the classic look.
A black-and-white L’Wren Scott bag and black L’Wren Scott slingbacks completed her look.
Are you delighted to see Nicole having fun with fashion, or do you find this look to be too costumey?

no to the shoes. but yes to everything else.
Agreed! My eyes are drawn to her feet constantly. Not the right shoes and I think this look is best left to Audrey, no-one could ever come near that moment of movie magic!
I agree. The shoes are ruining this for me.
This is great – it is certainly somewhat costumey but on purpose – so she’s clearly having fun and it is refreshing
It is very nice but I would change the shoes and the posture… it’s killing me
bull’s eye!
I like this look but her pose seems to be suggesting she feels uncomfortable.
I went to a halloween party last weekend as Eliza Doolittle so while I absolutely love it I find it incredibly costumey! I wish she’d worn this to a costume party of her own…
totally agree. I thought it was her halloween costume!
Maybe I’m not enough fan of My Fair Lady, but I must be the only one who finds this ridiculous and unnecessarily costumey. I mean, it’s true that we’ve seen much worse at other Derby-like events (like the horrid Jinifer Goodwin outfit from some time ago), but come on, it’s Nicole Kidman, she can do so much better.
Totally agree.
Yeap, I thought it was her Halloween costume too.
If one’s hosts dictate what one is to wear to an event, then like it or not one is wearing costume. It would be impolite to direct complaints about this at the guests.
I think Nicole would have had fun putting this outfit together, and that she looks lovely in it.
it is a tad costumey but in my opinion only someone like nicole could wear this and look classy.
+1
As a melbournian myself I’ve witnessed many derby day looks , this is tragic ..if your going to channel Audrey Hepburn do the full length , wear more of a classic sensible heel and go to a costume party not a horse racing carnival
I like that she is having fun with fashion again (back in her golden days) but this feels a bit costumey. Although I kinda dig it.
She’s having fun, but it is way too costumey. It isn’t a homage to Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, it is a rip-off. She could have pulled it off without that bow on the dress and with better shoes. The hat kinda works for the derby, although the tulle(?) sticking up is too OTT.
She looks flawless but i hate the shoes
She look so lovely.
I don’t like her shoes and her bag, but the rest is good.
I actually love this. It is very costumey, yet there is something undeniably charming about it (getting flashbacks from Ginnifer Goodwin’s Preen outfit?) Cute and classy.
A great inspirational look from my fair lady
Nicole always looks regal! Love it!
I’m on the fence about this one. There’s nothing WRONG with any piece of her outfit, per say, but when all put together they’re too much. The stripe detailing looks too matchy-matchy and the hat is just unneccessary IMO.
She looks great but not for real life, this look is a bit too costumey, for me.
And, to be honest, she totally looks like a witch
bawdy, gaudy, ugly, annoying, antiquated, terrifying, a semi massacre of a classic look and way tooooooooooooooooooooooooo gimmicky for my taste!!!!!!
This is soooooo Derby Day! I love it…. a lot!! I am glad she was home for our big events this week! Looks like she had fun with fashion
I wish my Derby Day dress was this lovely!
A pinstriped pair of shoes, to match the bow, would have been perfect, but I absolutely adore this look otherwise. It’s so fun, whimsical, and a perfect homage to My Fair Lady! It makes me smile and I’m glad to see Nicole having a good time on the red carpet. Two thumbs up.
