Michelle Williams accepted the ‘Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary’ for ‘Project Nim’ on behalf of James Marsh at the 2012 Directors Guild Of America Awards in Hollywood, California this weekend.
She went back into the archives to select this Chanel Fall 2007 Couture gown.
The one-shoulder black gown with embellished details on the shoulder and along the bodice also reveals more embellishments via the thigh-high split.
The look is mesmerizing on the runway, but falls a bit flat on Michelle.
Maybe it was one of those ‘better in the flesh’ looks.

The dress is gorgeus, but i guess that Michelle doesn’t have the attitude of “femme fatale” that was more appropiate for this kind of dress.
From the side, looks amazing!!
ditto.
Front and Side, I’m really liking this on her. The dress is gorgeous, and i’m glad it’s out after 4 yrs again!
Agree FC and Carla. From the front I was completely underwhelmed, the side elevates it quite a bit.
It`s a difficult fit to pull off, doesn`t look flattering even on the model. And Michelle is not selling it, ends up looking plain frumpy and dowdy in it. With more dramatic makeup and hairstyle and some bold attitude, this could`ve worked.
Agreed. I’ll also add it looks to me like a dress from the 1987 archives rather than 2007.
I guess this is more of a “walk”-dress than “stand still/pose”-dress as the best detail is lost when you’re not moving.
It’s a gorgeous dress but not on Michelle. I agree with Nat39, Michelle looks dumpy in this. She should have styled her hair differently. Yes, it’s short but it can be styled differently and more formally.
I think it’s mainly her downtrodden, deer in the headlights look that she adopts on the red carpet that contributes to the fail here. She always seem so full of ennui and like she’d like to be anywhere but there on the red carpet. I don’t understand how much flack Kirsten Stewart received for her red carpet demeanor but Michelle gets a pass when she always looks either scared, or ready to burst into tears at any moment.
Looks great from the side–from the front, it’s blah.
