George Clooney and Amal Clooney attended the Jay Kelly premiere at the Venice Film Festival, delivering very different takes on red carpet style.

George proved once again that he’s still Hollywood’s most dashing leading man, cutting a sharp figure in a midnight blue Giorgio Armani tuxedo. The satin lapels, the impeccable tailoring, the easy confidence — it was Armani doing what Armani does best.

Amal, however, left me conflicted. She dipped into her beloved vintage archive for this Jean-Louis Scherrer by Erik Mortensen gown from Autumn-Winter 1995-96. Now, I usually applaud her for unearthing hidden treasures and wearing them with conviction, but this fuchsia taffeta number wasn’t quite the gem I hoped for. Between the bold sheen, the voluminous skirt, and the overly nostalgic silhouette, it felt more “80s prom queen” than timeless vintage. Even the rain-dampened hem in some shots (thankfully not this one) dampened my enthusiasm for this look.

It’s not the dreaded taffeta itself that’s the problem — it’s how the colour and structure came together in a way that felt dated, rather than delightfully retro. Which is surprising to me, as she usually nails the balance of vintage charm and timeless refinement. Accessories-wise, she carried a Jimmy Choo Clemmie clutch and wore Aquazzura Forever More sandals.

This outing was a reminder that while vintage can be magic, not every piece translates effortlessly to the present day.
