I’m Back

At the start of the pandemic I was unsure whether to keep posting, but with your encouragement I was delighted to continue.

I have been absent these last – nearly 4 weeks – because; to sub quote Dave Chappelle “Do you want hear about celebrities right now?”

Following the tragic killing of George Floyd, and the powerful Black Lives Matter movement which followed, I’m certain the answer to that question was a definite no.

Speaking of the Black Lives Matter movement, we have seen a lot of fall out.

Lea Michele, Emma Watson, Kristen Bell, Leandra Medine Cohen, and brands such as Celine, Zimmermann and Reformation have been heavily criticised and received heavy backlash; which at one point had me wondering, “who is safe to talk about going forward?”

I follow most of the stylists in Hollywood, who have all support the BLM movement, so I have every confidence that they will not be dressing their clients in problematic brands.

This website has always been a huge part of escapism for me, and after four weeks of binge-watching the news, and educating myself on social issues, I’m going to return to updating from time to time.

I hope this isn’t as deem insensitive, as this website is the only thing keeping a roof over my head at present.

We love you FC! I have been a loyal follower in various usernames since 2009.

I hope stylists stop dressing their clients in Dolce & Gabbana. It was unacceptable in 2018 as it is now. *coughs* Karla Welch *coughs*

Thank God you are back ! Sending love here from Portugal and Iam from Brazil . . . I love your posts NEVER STOP POSTING!

Great that you’re back! Perhaps you can also use this time to widen the net in terms of designers which you follow and feature so that there are more fashion houses run by black and brown designers. There are also great African designers like Mangishi Doll, Maxhosa Africa, Christie Brown and Soko who are worn by celebrities (e.g. Angela Basset, Alicia Keys, Michelle Obama) but are seldom featured on the site. It would be great if one of the few black fashion bloggers could also shine a light on black fashion houses.

So happy to see you back!

I’m so glad you’re back Catherine.

Thank you. Good to be back, even if it is with a reduced service.

  6. Los_NGLS June 23, 2020 at 12:06 pm #

Welcome back Catherine! It is a completely different world from when you left, though in some aspects very much for the better…..

And I have a strong feeling that very rich famous people will continue to make positively baffling choices in their public attire, and I am excited to continue reading all your thoughts about them, and every now and then chime in with some of my own.

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:15 pm #

      Thank you.

      Yes, a lot has changed.

I’m intrigued to see how things are going forward.

I think the days of seeing hundreds of celebs at the Oscars etc are over.

Nominated and presenting only will be the way forward.

Same with premieres. Just the people who are actually in the movie.

      • Los_NGLS June 25, 2020 at 6:47 pm #

Yes, that will be very interesting to see how award shows move forward. I think the ESPYs did something virtual recently, but I didn’t really pay close attention. Will also be interesting to compare “East’ to “West” – organized responses to the pandemic (Korea for example) to the entire opposite (the US).
(And some people are throwing caution to the wind already, Teyana Taylor had a VERY NOT socially distant album release party last week)

Also makes you wonder what it will look like a year or 2 from now, when there might presumably be a vaccine for covid.

I’ve enjoyed how some have still managed to wear fun new things even in quarantine, Chloe and Halle come to mind in their backyard/at home performances in Balmain. (Beyonce’s marketing team is UNPARALLELED, lol)

So happy to have you back!!!! I am a long time reader and have missed hearing your thoughts on celebrity fashion and bigger picture movements including BLM. More than ever I need a bit of an escape via your blog. xx

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:17 pm #

      Thank you.

So much has happened, that I needed the escapism. I get trapped in a new cycle, and all i want to do is switch off.

It feels so nice to talk about things that put a smile on my face again.

  8. cat June 20, 2020 at 1:46 am #

So glad you are back, and that you are well.

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:18 pm #

Thank you. Im very well. I hope all is good with you x

  9. Lisa June 20, 2020 at 12:45 am #

Many celebrities still wear Dolce & Gabbana even though they’re problematic, so I don’t have hope stylists won’t style their clients in problematic brands.

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:19 pm #

      Lets see.

  11. Samuel June 19, 2020 at 9:59 pm #

Glad to see you’re back….I think i’ve probably refreshed the picture of Salma Hayek about 50 times over the past few weeks. I’m glad this is a form of escapism to you because it’s the same for me when I read it.

I was working in entertainment but have left during Corona and wont go back because the environment is getting too tricky to navigate. There’s the pressure to turn everything political and if you don’t follow the script then it gets messy. I’ve always chose to speak through the way I live my life…not by making social media statements.

If it means anything, I’ve always kept following you because you’ve never really made this political or preachy, even though it’s obvious you’re a really good person and have strong values! This is the point of escapism…a chance to detach from all that. It’s why I got into entertainment because I could escape but now thats gone. What you’ve done for representation of blacks in fashion speaks for itself…not only with your dedication but who you cover.

It’s funny, I really know very little about you but from reading your blog daily for probably about 10 years I always in my mind known you’re incredible!! Sooo glad you’re back!!

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:23 pm #

Sorry if that proved to be frustrating. But in light of recent events, it felt like the right thing to do.

I still feel a bit guilty, but this is my happy place, and I couldn’t wait to get back to work.

You are right. I try to leave politics out of any discussion, but I wanted to do one post to explain my absence.

I have been vocal on social media, but I got to a point were I can’t consume more news.

      I’m tapped out.

Escapism is the very reason I came back. I’m glad you have been enjoying the blog for so long.

Can’t believe 10 years has flown by so quickly.

  12. Karina June 19, 2020 at 7:08 pm #

Hi Catharine, I’m glad you’re back.

I’ve been a fan of your blog for a loooooong time, but I never made a comment here (I think the fact that English is not my first language kept me from doing it).

I really like your work that you do with such dedication and affection (and also humor).

I wish you all the best.

    Love,
    Karina, from Brazil.

    • Catherine Kallon June 19, 2020 at 7:11 pm #

      Hey Karina,

Thanks for making this your first comment.

English may not be your first language, but I was able to perfectly understand your kind words.

      Cx

Catherine – I’m so happy you’re back. I’ve been checking in every few days hoping you would return and of course hoping you were well!

More than ever we need places where the tone is calm, thoughtful, intelligent and well researched, places we can believe in!

Good luck with your next chapter..

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:24 pm #

Thank you…the next chapter is yet to be written, but let’s see how the entertainment and fashion industry move going forward.

Welcome back Catherine! Your blog has always been a most inclusive and respectful hangout, not just a great place for fashion lovers. Your voice truly stands out in the media. So happy you are back!

    • Catherine Kallon June 24, 2020 at 9:27 pm #

Thank you. Good to be back.

Yes, inclusivity has been what this platform was built on.

      I appreciate you recognizing that.

  18. Chiara June 19, 2020 at 1:33 pm #

Here in Italy this assassination has had a much lesser impact and I find it hard to imagine the emotions that have swept the life and work of those who have been involved more strongly.
What I know for sure is that it is important for me to hear your voice: you are a strong, independent woman, you are able to dose judgments in an job where this is very difficult (and it is always tempting to attack another woman to get more likes).
If I can do something concrete to help you carry on your work, your projects and continue reading, I will always do so.

  19. _Hannah_ June 19, 2020 at 1:10 pm #

    Hello Catherine,

I am so glad you’re back. As for the others, this website is part of my daily escapism routine 😉 I hope that in those strange and difficult times you had and have support and means to take care of yourself.
I’m looking forward to reading your new posts.

    All the best
    Anna

Welcome back! Social justice touches all our lives. Fashion has the ability to influence both culture and politics. In times like these, it’s important to use your voice in whatever medium is available.

  27. Elena Venturini June 18, 2020 at 9:30 pm #

You’ve been missed Catherine, really happy to have you back

  28. James June 18, 2020 at 9:17 pm #

Please keep the content coming. Such a strange time right now and with so much disruption it’s great to take some time out and read your posts.

  29. TeaAtTwo June 18, 2020 at 8:08 pm #

Delighted that you’re back. A unique site for fashion lovers and a great place to take time out from it all and dream a little. Plus, it’s always great to see a black woman shining and excelling at what she does.

  30. TeaAtTwo June 18, 2020 at 8:04 pm #

Virgil Abloh bragging about making a $50 donation when his ugly Off-White items are ludicrously overpriced usually ripped off from someone else has been been a fashion joke during this BLM’ 20 movement, especially when his brand’s christmas work party photos showed that he has NO black people working in his team.

  31. Martijn June 18, 2020 at 7:52 pm #

Glad you are back Catherine! These weeks have been strange for a lot of us, but a good moment to reflect about our actions and impact in the world.
Your blog is very much appreciated, as others pointed, it feels like a very much welcome escape from the real world, a place to forget problems and enjoy (and learn about fashion). So happy to red yours posts again.

    Hope you are safe!
A big fan from Amsterdam (for almost 8 years)

  32. Patricia June 18, 2020 at 7:43 pm #

Glad to have you back. Keep up the good work.

  33. Nadine June 18, 2020 at 7:19 pm #

I was afraid you’d gotten sick! Am glad to hear that isn’t the case & understand your reticence. This has been a time to think about how we think about a lot of things, hasn’t it?

  34. Alkisti June 18, 2020 at 7:06 pm #

I recently found this blog and I was delighted to know that you were still updating it even when there are no more red carpet events! I totally understand the need to keep silent during the black lives matter movement, and I respect you for doing so. Celebrity fashion has always been an inspiration to me and an escape even in the middle of the pandemic when there is nothing to get dressed up for. It’s important to not forget the big changes that have to happen in society and not ignore that Black Lives Matter moving forward. I don’t think posting again means ignoring what’s going on. So, glad to see you re still active and looking forward to more content!

  35. Paola June 18, 2020 at 6:47 pm #

Welcome back! we missed you. It’s hard in these times to know when it’s appropriate to “go back to regular activities” without being deemed insensitive. I have every confidence that you will continue to be as gracious as always. We are here with you, ready to listen and to learn along the way.

    • Catherine Kallon June 18, 2020 at 6:56 pm #

      Thank you Paola.

You’re so right…but we do need to carry on. For our own sanity more than anything else.

      Appreciate you xxx

  36. Delphine June 18, 2020 at 6:21 pm #

    Hi Catherine,
I’m really happy to see you back. We live in strange times. This website is my escape from reality (For more than a decade!) and I am happy to read you again.
    Take care
    With love
    Delphine

    • Catherine Kallon June 18, 2020 at 6:52 pm #

      Hey Delphine,

So very strange as you said.

I was walking around numb for two weeks. I didn’t know what to do with myself.

I hope you and your loved ones are doing well.

Thanks for your support. It means a lot.

      Cx

  37. Bhushan June 18, 2020 at 5:58 pm #

  38. XAN June 18, 2020 at 5:34 pm #

    • Catherine Kallon June 18, 2020 at 6:53 pm #

Thank you.. I really appreciate that.

I will be mixing up the content going forward. Bringing more than just celebrity fashion.
