Carey Mulligan In Balenciaga – 2013 Met Gala

Carey Mulligan joined a host of other bold names, as she stunned on the 2013 Met Gala red carpet at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

‘The Great Gatsby’ actress interpreted the evening’s punk theme with an impressively smart flourish in her black Balenciaga dress that riffed on the style era’s obsession with safety pins.

The angular, cutout design was neither look-at-me or louche. But the oversized gold pin at the neck still spoke volumes.

Was it an homage to the uber-famous Versace safety-pin dress donned by Elizabeth Hurley in the ’90s? Perhaps.

Regardless, I have to say I love this tongue-in-cheek variation that’s simultaneously classic and cool-girl, amidst a sea of overwrought edge at tonight’s ball.

Carey slicked back her deeply side-parted blonde locks and wore a nude lip to complete this refined look.

Call it sophisticated, new-age punk.

Nice and classy but oh my goodness! I am so bored.

I don’t like the side cutout but other than that I really like this look, the gold safety pin totally elevates it. It’s very Carey.
Although last year’s look was on a TOTALLY different level.

I love an LBD as much as the next gal, but she needs a darker lip. She’s a bit washed out here.

    Simple but flawless

I love the simplicity as well. One of my best dressed tonight.

      I agree.

She needs a darker lip. Too washed out.

    Want. Shoes…

Now I’m pretty sure she got a new stylist, and I’m lovin it. Her stylist is probably Victoria Beckham…. lol

    • Emmeline May 7, 2013 at 05:45 #

She’s actually working with Ryan Hastings now.

She looks like a secretary from a 80’s space movie. Even a themed party can’t get this girl to shake things up and get out of her boring comfort zone.

    Hot shoes though ^^

I love this simple, sleek and chic look. But I would’ve loved it more if it had been in another colour. She’s wearing black so much lately, it really is boring. Love this look regardless though.

She could’ve done sooo much more with her hair and makeup. Her lips matching her face color just creeps me out. Just why?

  12. Eve_V May 7, 2013 at 03:25 #

I love this simple, stream-lined, no-fuss look. Even her makeup is on point, even if I don’t like beige lips in general.

  13. Alicat May 7, 2013 at 03:26 #

I love the dress and it fits well, but I don’t think this elevates her to “sophisticated, new-age punk”. Her bland makeup and attitude-devoid stance is the antithesis of everything punk.

  14. Nat May 7, 2013 at 03:27 #

Comparing to what she wore last year this is ultra boring -___-

  15. kane May 7, 2013 at 03:31 #

I like this, I do. But the fact at first sight I thought I would LOVE this just shows that I’ve been a little bored over her last outings.

  16. Marybeth May 7, 2013 at 03:38 #

The main problem with Carey wearing so much black is that, with this blonde hair, she just doesn’t look good in it. (Halle Berry and Jennifer Anniston may bore us to tears with black but at least it flatters them.) Carey looks washed out and, if she punches up the make-up to compensate, she’ll look overly made up. Let’s hope she can change that hair soon.

That being said, I think this is a delightful look. It’s very Carey-classy but gives us the nod to punk with that safety pin. Clever and elegant!

  20. Bridget May 7, 2013 at 10:38 #

Can someone please tell me what shoes Ms Mulligan is wearing? Nobody has mentioned what shoes they are on any website yet!

    • shifa May 12, 2013 at 05:15 #

      Her shoes are Balenciaga

  21. Fiona-Brasil May 7, 2013 at 11:22 #

She tries way too hard to be cool! Now this is what I call a Rooney Mara impersonation.

  22. Moxie May 7, 2013 at 16:27 #
