Teyana Taylor’s Exaggerated Proportions at the ‘All’s Fair’ Premiere

Having missed the European and Mexico City stops on the All’s Fair Season 2 press tour, Teyana Taylor joined her castmates in New York for the premiere.

Considering Teyana’s relationship with Thom Browne, you would be forgiven for thinking this look was designed by the American designer. However, it was the work of British couturier Nicholas Oakwell, from his Just Charles Collection.

At 5ft 4in (163cm), Teyana was always going to have a challenge on her hands with those exaggerated wide-leg trousers. I really wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, especially as she has the personality to carry off unconventional designs, but there is simply too much fabric. Even the oversized sculptural bow, which should have been the defining feature, loses some of its appeal because of how heavily the trousers fall.

What makes this frustrating is that I love everything from the corset up. The cropped, double-breasted jacket, ivory corset, sheer shirt front and white bow tie are fantastic on her. The tailoring is sharp, the fit is flattering, and this is exactly the kind of fashion-forward look I enjoy seeing Teyana wear.

Looking at the collection image, I can appreciate the full design, but on Teyana, I can’t help wishing the trousers had been scaled down. Not dramatically, just enough to give her some breathing room.

This had all the ingredients to be a winner, but the proportions left me unconvinced.
