Olivia Colman’s Fashion Evolution Takes Another Turn

Olivia Colman was back on the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, Wicker, held at the Directors Guild of America on Tuesday.

The British actress has been on quite the experimental fashion journey during this press tour. Not that she’s been doing anything particularly out of the ordinary, especially compared to her co-star Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd, but there has been a noticeable shift in her style. And I’m really enjoying her longer hairstyle, especially how her curls were smoothed out for this occasion.

On this occasion, Olivia wore a red Prada shirt with a burgundy taffeta skirt featuring irregular pleats and an asymmetric train.

On paper, this combination shouldn’t work. The utilitarian shirt, complete with buttoned flap pockets and epaulettes, feels worlds apart from the sweeping taffeta skirt. One belongs in a casual wardrobe, while the other is made for the red carpet. Yet somehow, I love them together.

I think the colour combination has a lot to do with it. The vibrant red against the deep burgundy creates a beautiful tonal contrast that helps unite two otherwise contrasting pieces, while the structured shirt balances the volume and irregular draping of the skirt.

This is the kind of unexpected pairing I enjoy seeing from Prada, and I’m glad Olivia is embracing it. She’s not completely reinventing her style, but she’s certainly becoming more adventurous, and I’m enjoying every minute of it.
