Sandra Hüller’s Dramatic Period-Inspired Look for ‘Rose’

We’ve been obsessed with the German actress’ style for some time, and if you thought her official appointment as a Chanel ambassador would mean the end of her wearing other labels, think again. Last night, Sandra opted for a Matières Fécales Fall 2026 look that gave us plenty to talk about.

As you know, grey isn’t my favourite colour, but I’m obsessed with everything going on here.

From the sculpted shoulders and sharply defined waist of the double-breasted wool jacket to the volume of the full, pleated skirt, there’s so much to appreciate about this silhouette. The exaggerated proportions recall Christian Dior’s New Look of 1947, particularly the emphasis on a narrow waist and a full skirt, although the angular shoulders give this ensemble a more imposing character.

And considering that Rose is a period drama in which Sandra plays a woman living as a man in 17th-century Germany, there’s an interesting connection between the film and the clothes. The masculine tailoring of the jacket contrasts with the traditionally feminine silhouette of the skirt, reflecting the film’s exploration of gender and identity. Whether that was the thinking behind this choice or not, it’s a fascinating parallel.

I know some of you are looking at those white leather gloves with their red detailing in disappointment, but I honestly don’t mind them. They feel like part of the storytelling.

If anything, I would have been more disappointed had Sandra opted for the runway’s white pumps. Her black pointed-toe shoes were a much better choice, keeping the focus on that extraordinary silhouette.

For me, Sandra has taken something that could easily have looked like a period costume and made it feel relevant today. But I’m curious whether you see the same appeal, or if the historical references make this look a little too theatrical for the red carpet.
