An Evening With Normani & Lydia Asrat

‘An Evening With Normani & Lydia Asrat’ was a GRAMMY Museum conversation exploring Normani’s music, career and creative partnership with her longtime manager, Lydia Asrat.

For the occasion, the singer wore a Jean Paul Gaultier turtleneck dress that immediately reminded me of one of those optical illusion tests where you’re asked what you see first.

Is it wood grain? Or the outline of the female body?

In this case, the answer is both.

Jean Paul Gaultier has long played with graphic illusions that celebrate the female form. Think back to the era when everyone was wearing the house’s iconic Body Morphing dresses, from Anitta, Beyonce and Megan Fox’s naked-illusion looks to the colourful dotted versions favoured by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian. This design feels like a quieter evolution of that idea.

Instead of relying on bright colours or exaggerated trompe-l’Å“il effects, the swirling wood-grain motif subtly contours the body while still carrying unmistakable Gaultier DNA. It’s instantly recognisable if you’re familiar with the label’s archives, yet restrained enough to feel fresh.

For an evening spent reflecting on creativity and artistic partnerships, it felt like an inspired choice.
