Ariana Grande Wore Christian Dior by John Galliano To The 2025 Governors Awards

Ariana Grande joined her Wicked: For Good co-star Cynthia Erivo on the red carpet for the 2025 Governors Awards on Sunday evening.

While Cynthia stepped away from her Elphaba-coded black looks, Ariana leaned even further into Glinda mode, reaching into the archives once again.

The singer wore a one-shouldered blush pink gown from the Christian Dior Fall 2007 collection, designed during John Galliano’s theatrical reign at the house. That collection was a love letter to Dior’s own legacy — dramatic silhouettes, hand-worked embellishment, and a reinterpretation of the iconic New Look. You don’t need to know the runway reference to feel the craftsmanship, but once you do, it becomes even more delicious.

It’s also wild that this is technically ready-to-wear. The embroidery alone feels couture-level, and the way the skirt drapes and gathers across the hip still feels fresh nearly two decades later. That is Galliano — even at his most maximalist, he understood structure and romance better than almost anyone.

If you’re experiencing déjà vu, that’s because Emmy Rossum wore this exact gown to the Skin Sense Awards back in 2007 — 18 years, two weeks, and two days ago, to be precise. And Hong Kong actress Carina Lau also wore this same dress two weeks later to the closing ceremony of 2007 Golden Rooster Awards. The dress looked breathtaking then, and somehow, Ariana makes it feel revived rather than repeated.

Didn’t Eva Green wear this Dior dress?

You’d be right to ask, because this has Eva written all over it. One of the reasons we fell in love with Eva’s style is her lifelong affinity for Galliano-era Dior, and she did wear the black version to The Golden Compass premiere back in December 2007.

There’s also something fascinating about Ariana’s ongoing archival strategy. She’s not just pulling any vintage look — she’s choosing pieces that reinforce her Glinda storyline. This one might be her most successful yet, because even outside that context, it’s simply beautiful.

Remember when I said that each look is better than the last? Here we are again — which has me even more excited for tonight’s LA premiere.
