Michaela Coel Wore Hiba Rahma To ‘The Christophers’ Toronto Film Festival Premiere

To say I’ve missed Michaela Coel on the red carpet would be an understatement. Her absence was felt — especially as her Vogue UK September issue cover had already reminded us of her presence in Alaïa Fall 2025. So when she appeared at the premiere of The Christophers during the Toronto Film Festival, the joy was layered.

First, the obvious: she was back. But what moved me more was the purpose behind her look. Michaela chose a traditional Sudanese toub, handmade by Sudanese designer Hiba Rahma, as a tribute to those who have long stood on the frontlines of change — including the 2019 women’s uprising.

The espresso shade wasn’t a fashion coincidence; it was deliberate. It spotlighted the beauty of dark-skinned women in Sudan, a community facing prejudice and persecution, reframing their skin tone as something to celebrate, not condemn.

Her accessories deepened the message. Designed by Sudanese creative Nisreen Kuku, the Al Qamar Boba earrings carried symbolism of sacrifice and protection. Gold in Sudan isn’t just adornment; it’s history, resilience, and survival in times of crisis.

This wasn’t styling for spectacle. With the guidance of Ebaa Elmelik, co-founder of Media for Justice in Sudan, Michaela’s ensemble became an act of storytelling. Fashion with intention, worn with grace.
