Julia Garner Wore Thom Browne To ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ London Premiere
Julia Garner, who plays Shalla Bal—a version of the Silver Surfer—in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, made her first press tour appearance at the film’s London premiere this evening, and she didn’t waste any time getting into character.

Silver by name, silver by nature. Julia hit the BFI IMAX Waterloo red carpet in a dazzling silver sequinned gown from Thom Browne’s Spring 2017 collection. The original look, which featured a trompe l’oeil shirt, tie, and waistcoat, was worn by Janelle Monáe back in 2017 for the Virtuosos Tribute. But Julia gave it a fresh, futuristic twist, stripping it back and making it her own.
She removed the more playful, tailored elements of the original to create something sleeker and more in line with the tone of the film—and it worked. The illusion panels don’t completely win me over, but I appreciate the styling choice in this context. The original layers wouldn’t have made much sense for a character who travels the galaxy on a surfboard of cosmic energy.
With silver-tinged hair and sparkling jewels to match, Julia leaned all the way into the theme. It was literal, with the kind of thoughtful transformation you’d expect from someone with Julia’s sartorial power.
