It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Janelle Monae on the red carpet, but her signature black-and-white M.O. is as strong as ever, judging by her appearance at Alvin Ailey’s 2017 Opening Night Gala on Wednesday (November 29) in New York City.
I love how she took the deconstructed elements of this tweedy Thom Browne Spring 2018 ensemble and made them work to her advantage.
It’s a directional look to be sure—with a certain theatrical bent—given the shrunken jacket and low-slung, disconnected trousers.
But she makes it work with her unique style sensibility, especially when topped off with a wide-brim hat and punchy red lip.
