Michelle Obama For Vogue US April 2013

Michelle Obama Vogue April 2013

When rumours surfaced that Annie Leibovitz had shot First Lady, Michelle Obama, wearing a Reed Krakoff dress and Kimberly McDonald earrings for the cover of the April 2013 issue of American Vogue, I was excited to see the end result.

That disappeared, somewhat, when I saw the cover to find that she had been heavily airbrushed.

Her sleek black Michael Kors Pre-Fall look in the editorial managed to make up for my cover disappointment.

In the magazine, Michelle talks about being a parent, her marriage to Barack Obama, inspiring America, her relationship with fashion, and living their lives on their terms: not the First Family but family first.

Here are some extracts from her interview.

On the importance of family: “Our job is, first and foremost, to make sure our family is whole. You know, we have small kids; they’re growing every day. But I think we were both pretty straightforward when we said, ‘Our No. 1 priority is making sure that our family is whole’.”

On her mother, Marian: “My mother doesn’t do interviews but let me tell you: she is not long on pretense. She’s the first one to remind us who we are. And it’s been very helpful having her living with us. . . We can check reality against her sensibilities.”

On what she’s learned from her husband, President Barack Obama: “Well, patience and calm I’m borrowing. Or trying to mirror. I’ve learned that from my husband, that sort of, you know, ability to not get too high or too low with changes and bumps in the road. . . to do more breathing in and just going with it. I’m learning that every day. And to the extent that I’ve made changes in my life, it’s just sort of stepping back and seeing a change not as something to guard against but as a wonderful addition. . . that can make life fun and unexpected.”

Michelle Obama In Naeem Khan – 2013 Oscars

85th Annual Academy Awards - Show

The last person we were expecting to see at the 2013 Oscars was Michelle Obama.

Presenting the ‘Best Picture’ award live via satellite from the Governors’ dinner in Washington, D.C., the First Lady looked radiant wearing a gown by her go-to designer, Naeem Khan.

Much like Octavia Spencer and Tadashi Shoji, Mrs O and Naeem Khan are a match made in fashion heaven.

Her custom-made smoke-grey and silver art deco inspired beaded sleeveless tulle gown with a square neckline was styled with the most exquisite earrings and a matching ring.

Sporting the most famous bangs in the world, she completed her look with a glossy lip colour.

Michelle Obama In Jason Wu – President Obama Delivers State Of The Union Address

Michelle Obama In Jason Wu - President Obama Delivers State Of The Union Address

President Barack Obama gave the annual State of the Union address during a joint session of Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

Michelle Obama was in attendance looking lovely as always wearing a Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2013 dress.

Originally presented as a leather halter quilted tweed dress, Jason Wu made a FLOTUS friendly version of look.

I love how it retains the edge with the leather detailing plus the A-line silhouette is so flattering on her gorgeous figure.

Sporting her ‘second term bangs‘, Michelle styled the look with a gold flower brooch and I’m guessing black Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik kitten heels.

No wonder Jason Wu continues to be her go-to designer.

Best Dressed Of The Week – Michelle Obama In Jason Wu & Sarah Jessica Parker In Giambattista Valli Couture & Mary Katrantzou

BDOTW FLOTUS & SJP

FLOTUS was your best dressed this week wearing Jason Wu and I can’t fault your choice as Mihcelle Obama looked stunning at the inaugural ball.

My choice was Sarah Jessica Parker.

As a lover of prints she managed to expertly blend a variety of prints courtesy of Giambattista Valli Couture, Mary Katrantzou and Jean-Michel Cazabat and make them work together.

This is a feat we thought only Solange Knowles could master.

Michelle Obama In Naeem Khan – National Prayer Service

Michelle Obama In Naeem Khan - National Prayer Service

Michelle Obama attended the National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral yesterday morning following an amazing night at the inaugural ball.

The First Lady wore a custom Naeem Khan ivory wool-appliqué 3/4-sleeve coat with jewelled neck and trim with a matching sleeveless dress.

I knew Mrs O wouldn’t let this moment pass without donning at least one look from the Indian designer. In fact, this is the eighth time that Mrs Obama has worn designs by Naeem Khan, the first time being at the administration’s first State Dinner back in November, 2009.

Opting to wear her hair in an neat updo, she styled her Sunday Best (even though it’s Tuesday) look with nude kitten heels and light makeup.

Michelle Obama In Jason Wu – Commander-In-Chief’s Inaugural Ball

Michelle Obama In Jason Wu - Public Inaugural Ball

I stayed up until 2am eager to watch history in the making as Michelle Obama revealed her gown to the world at the public Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. on Monday evening.

I was delighted to see that Mrs O wore Jason Wu again.

After a weekend of muted colours, she dazzled the crowds wearing a custom ruby chiffon and velvet gown which showcased her athletic figure and radiant smooth skin.

While some of you may have been rooting for another designer, I think she made the right choice in wearing a designer she felt comfortable with, whose feminine design aesthetic has flattered her on so many occasions over the past four years.

Kimberly McDonald provided the custom-made jewels and Jimmy Choo provided her heels – I’m guessing they are kitten heels.

The only question I have is, “where was Chris de Burgh?”

If ever there was a moment to sing ‘Lady in Red’, this was it.

Jason’s simple reply on twitter was #Inshock!!!

Michelle Obama In Thom Browne – St. John’s Church

Michelle Obama In Thom Browne - St John’s Church

The Obama family arrived at St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C. this morning on Inauguration Day in very good spirits.

Michelle wore a Thom Browne custom navy jacquard coat and dress for the occasion, which she accented with a bejewelled J. Crew belt, her second bejewelled piece in so many days.

The rest of her accessories, by J. Crew, included purple gloves and grey kitten heels.

The First Lady also wore this look to the ceremonial swearing-in event, but she added navy Reed Krakoff knee-high boots to her look as the event was hosted outside.

Michelle Obama In Michael Kors – 57th Presidential Inauguration Reception

57th Presidential Inauguration Reception - Michelle Obama

Capping off a busy weekend, Michelle Obama took to the stage with her husband Barack Obama at the 57th Presidential Inauguration, held at the National Building Museum on Sunday in Washington D.C., wearing her third look.

On this occasion, the First Lady sparkled wearing a Michael Kors black sequin boat-neck dress with her favourite Manolo Blahnik kitten heels and a selection of diamond-encrusted bracelets.

For the second time this weekend, FLOTUS has recycled a look.

First the McQueen and now this dress, which was first worn back in September 2009 for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Dinner.

Somehow, I don’t think tonight’s gown will be a repeat.

Michelle Obama In Reed Krakoff – President’s Official Swearing-In Ceremony

Obama And Biden Sworn In During Official Ceremony

With the inauguration festivities well under way, Michelle Obama was captured looking adoringly at her husband on Sunday morning for the President’s official swearing-in ceremony in the Blue Room of the White House.

How appropriate that the First Lady opted to wear a blue Reed Krakoff dress and cardigan, which matched both her husband’s blue suit, the decor in the room and Malia blue H&M dress.

The blue-and-black floral-print dress with a slightly flared skirt was styled with black patent Jimmy Choo ‘Aza’ kitten heels and a nude lip colour.

I can’t wait to see what she wears tonight for the ball.
