Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Bejeweled Hair

Actresses attending the awards ceremonies are always dripping in millions of dollars worth of diamonds, but a surprising amount of jewelry has been appearing in the stars’ hair this year.

Ellie Kemper and Morena Baccarin kicked off the trend at the SAG Awards last month when they both wore diamond brooches in their up dos, and at 2013 Oscars Sandra Bullock sported a platinum and diamond Harry Winston brooch pinned above her left ear and Salma Hayek tied up her oversized bun with a gold Cindy Chao choker.

Stylists were doubtless taking inspiration from the catwalk where tiaras, headbands and brooches worn as hair accessories have been popping up at Dolce & Gabbana, Rodarte and Meadham Kirchoff.

Hair stylist Mara Roszak, who worked with Nicole Kidman at the Academy Awards this year, told us: ‘Wearing jewels in the hair can be a really fresh addition to a look. It takes accessorizing to another level. The most important part is finding the right piece to use. It has to make sense. I like pieces to be more subtle and not take away from the hairstyle, but add a nice feminine touch.’

‘In Nicole’s hair I used an antique brooch that matched her beautiful Fred Leighton earrings. They were picked out by her stylist, and the brooch was perfect for the hair.’ ‘I like to place hair accessories on one side of a hairstyle, not symmetrical in any way. Kind of like a hidden treasure.’

The good news is that anyone can try this look  – even if Neil Lane is not prepared to loan you an 18k piece from his collection. Any brooch can be adapted with the help of a few bobby pins or try Tarina Tarantino for a selection of beautiful hair crystal, lucite and tulle accessories that won’t break the bank.

Superbowl 2013 Hair

The Super Bowl hit a new high this year with stunning appearances by Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce, along with her former Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

But while all the ladies’ performances were pitch perfect, not all hit the right notes in the hair department. Kelly Rowland’s overgrown extensions and heavy fringe looked wig-like and Michelle Williams also looked like she needed a trim with her too long waves.

Los Angeles based stylist Shin An was on hand in the NFL Experience Lounge Gifting Suite in New Orleans this year to style attending celebrities and players’ wives for the big event. Shin, whose salon was recently named among the Best 100 in the US by ELLE magazine, gave us her verdict on which of the divas scored a touchdown with their coiffure.

‘Beyonce’s hair looked great but predictable. She went for the same big, beachy, sexy hair,’ said Shin.

‘Alicia’s hair was overly done, lacked style and height and did not compliment her face.’

‘Jennifer Hudson was my favourite. Her loose, messy chignon with the full bangs was hot and looked much more current and interesting.’

‘To copy Jennifer’s look start with dry, brushed hair and, starting about 10cm down from the roots, spray on some Sachajuan Volume Powder. This is a powder-based spray that creates volume and provides structure with a matte finish. Work it through with your fingers.’

‘Next, pull the hair to a low side ponytail. Separate the hair into two parts and then twist them around each other. Starting at the bottom, pull out some random pieces to loosed the coil and create texture. Wrap the coil into a bun-like shape and pin into place with bobby pins.’

SAG Awards Hair

The forties influence was still very much in evidence at the Screen Actors Guild Awards over the weekend. But while Jessica Chastain (aka Jessica Rabbit), Naomi Watts and Naya Rivera stuck to a conventional Veronica Lake side-parting with loose waves,  Amanda Seyfried, Julianne Moore and Jennifer Lawrence added a twist to the look, pinning one side of the hair back completely.

Stylist Mark Townsend, whose clients include all of the Olsen sisters, Nicole Richie and Lea Michele, talked to us about how he achieved Jennifer Lawrence’s red carpet style for the event.

‘For the Screen Actors Guild Awards I was inspired by old Hollywood glamour, so I wanted Jennifer’s hair to show that influence and inspiration,’ Mark said. ‘But I wanted it to be young and very modern as well.’

‘To get her side swept waves, I started by applying a nickel-sized amount of Dove Color Care Leave On Conditioner into Jennifer’s damp hair – she’s colored her hair so much lately so her hair needs added moisture and protection.’

‘Next, I loaded her hair with the Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse and blow dried with a large round brush. To give her hair a loose wave, I wrapped sections of hair varying from 2 to 5 inches around a 1 1/4 inch curling iron, leaving the ends out.’

‘I took a small amount of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands, rubbed my hands together and then raked my fingers through the waves to break them up and give the hair amazing shine, then took the hair from the right side, twisted it and then pinned it in the back with a few bobby pins.

‘To give the hair a cool, lived-in texture, I sprayed Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray from mid-length to ends and scrunched with my hands. I finished by spraying Dove Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray liberally all over to keep her hair in place all night and give the hair even more shine.’

It will be interesting to see how this red carpet trend evolves this month with the BATFA’s, Grammy’s and Academy Awards still to go.

Michelle Obama’s Second Term Bangs

While there was plenty of buzz surrounding the First Lady’s outfit choices for President Obama’s swearing in, inauguration and the ball that followed, it was Michelle’s newly cut fringe that caused the most stir over the weekend.

Chicago based Johnny Wright, her exclusive hairstylist since 2008 and the force behind her new look, explained: ‘It was a collaborative effort… she was ready for a change.’

‘Sometimes all we need is a little change in our appearance to give us the extra oomph. Cutting bangs is one of those go-to styles that can immediately change your appearance,’ he said. ‘And the great thing about bangs is I think they work for all face shapes. The thing is you need to get it cut properly for your face shape and that why I say you should always consult a professional and see what works best for you. Should they be shorter? Should they be longer? Should they be swept to one side?’

But that is the hardest part according to Wright. ‘The only trick with maintaining bangs is just keeping them trimmed,’ he says. ‘A lot of salons offer free bang trims so you go in and keep the fresh look you want.’

‘Bangs are so cool because they can make you look really sexy and youthful and at the same time really change up your look. It’s a new year and I think it’s a great opportunity for women to adopt a new look.’

Here are Wright’s tips for achieving a presidential head of hair:

‘You should be deep conditioning to soften and nourish the hair shaft every time you shampoo. There is no such thing as too much deep conditioning.’ He recommends SoftSheen-Carson Roots of Nature Reconstructing Deep Treatment which strengthens hair with a blend of shea butter and green tea.

‘My biggest complaint from clients is that they have thin hair that doesn’t have any volume.’ He swears by Amla Legend Billion Hair Potion Hair and Scalp Serum.  ‘A little goes a long way and it gives you a noticeably thicker, fuller look.’

Anne Hathaway Hair

Growing out short hair is never easy. Fortunately for Anne Hathaway, who brutally hacked off her long brunette locks live on film in the screen adaptation of Les Miserables, she has had a team of pros on hand to make sure she looks chic every step of the way.

And it seems that now she has added a few inches, Anne has decided to stick with her new do: ‘I love the short-haired lifestyle,’ Hathaway told US Vogue. ‘I’m turning 30, and — I hope this isn’t obnoxious to say — I feel prettier, and much more myself. I guess I just feel much more satisfied with less now.’

Our favourite look so far, has been the work of New York based stylist Sascha Breuer who has given her pixie crop a more edgy look and swept her fringe off to the left side.

He gave us some tips on how to copy this style:  ‘To add an edge to Anne’s chic look, we decided to give the hair a messy and very textured feel and styled her longer, now more grown-out fringe to sweep casually to the side, gently grazing her face.’

‘To recreate this look I would recommend you blow-dry your hair and shape it slightly with your hands, after spraying a little bit of Wella SP Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray or salt water spray for added gut.’

‘Once the hair is completely dry, use a ceramic straightener on individual sections to enhance the hair and bring out the straighter, rock-chic feel of the look.’

‘I really like the Braun Satin Hair Series Straightener as it will allow you to adjust the temperature and personalize it to the needs of your hair. Mist some of the spray directly on your fingers and define single strands without weighing your hair down. This way, the spray stays on really light and your will let your hair look and feel natural, even though it has a strong hold level.’

‘Stylish and cool, without a fuss!’

Golden Globes Hair Trends 1940s

While there were some updos and princess buns on this year’s red carpet, the overwhelming trend was for retro side partings with loose curls, reminiscent of a 1940 screen siren.

LA based stylist Mara Roszak, who did Michelle Dockery’s hair for the event, spoke to us about the look: ‘There were a lot of thirties, forties inspired styles at the Golden Globes this year,’ said Mara. ‘This hair is classic, really flattering and extremely feminine and elegant. It is definitely a more glamorous style that dresses up an outfit.’

‘I completely fell in love with Michelle’s Alexandre Vauthier dress as soon as I saw it. The neckline and padded shoulders had such a strong look and I loved the idea of a French romantic wavy texture for her bob. I felt like giving her newly cut hair a bit of texture and wave to edge up the look.’

Mara, who also counts Emma Stone, Mila Kunis and Kate Beckinsale among her clients, gave us some insider tips on how she achieved the style: ‘When the hair is wet it’s important to apply a product that is going to add volume and hold. I love TIGI Bed Head Superstar Queen For a Day Thickening Spray or Leonor Greyl Mousse Au Lotus Volumatrice – both leave the hair feeling soft and smooth but add hold.’

‘To start, part the hair to one side – I like to use the arch of the eyebrow as a guide for most side partings – then blow the hair out with a small to medium size round brush (I use Ibiza Hair brushes) pin curling the hair after each section. Once the hair is dry I’ll spritz the pin curls with a bit of Elnett hair spray, then remove the pins. The pin curls add volume and movement, but the hair still needs to be set with hot tools.’

‘For a more brushed out, Veronica Lake style wave as seen on Rachel Weisz, Megan Fox, Jessica Alba and Isla Fisher, I would use T3 hot rollers to set the hair. Let them sit for a goodvten minutes, spray again with Elnett, then lightly smooth out with a Mason Pearson brush, molding the hair into the shape you want.’

‘For a tighter wave, like Amy Adams and Jennifer Lopez, using one inch pin curls would be the way to go. After the hair is out of the pin curls I would wrap each one inch section around a heated iron towards the face, allowing the hair to naturally twist as its being wrapped, and pin at the base. Curl the whole head, towards the face on both sides. Spray with hairspray, and remove pins. Gently brush out hair and shape. Finally, pull the side with less hair behind the ear, keeping that side clean and off the shoulder.’

‘To add a bit of shine and tame flyaways apply a dab of Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel Styling Cream or Bumble and bumble Brilliantine to palms of hands and run it through the ends of the hair, working your way up. Spray again with hair spray.’
