Beauty Trend Spotting: Lacquered ‘n Loose

We’re all for laissez-faire hair. Looks like Petra Nemcova and Kate Beckinsale are too, as they’ve recently given the same ‘new age mullet’ look a go. (Say it with us—business in the front, paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarty in the back!)

Seen at all over the Spring 2012 runways—Giambattista Valli, Proenza Schouler, Felder Felder, BCBG, and Elie Saab (pictured below)—catwalk hairstylists like Guido Palau, Eugene Souleiman, and Orlando Pita made ‘hat hair’ look haute by sending half-lacquered, half-loose locks down the runway.

We love the ‘shiny at the top, loose in the back’ look for two reasons:

1. It’s a glamorous style that real women can easily recreate, and 2. It’s perfect for breathing new life into day-old curls.

To get the look, brush curls into loose waves. Insert a deep diagonal off-center part, and comb your strands back, stopping at the nape of your neck. Generously palm medium hold gel over your crown, starting at your hairline, ceasing just above your nape. Finish by inserting a few bobby pins behind both ears if you’d like to create a clear line of demarcation.

Recreate Kristen Stewart’s Textured Updo From The Twilight LA Premiere

Stylist Adir Abergel created a textured updo for Kristen Stewart’s ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ LA Premiere look on Monday night.

Before the cast take the red carpet at the London premiere tonight, here’s a look at how you can recreate her look.

The inspiration was an edgy, yet romantic look. Adir was inspired to create an updo that still felt like Kristen’s usual tousled and textured style with a touch of rockability.

How To Get the Look: Adir began by applying Fekkai Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel to the roots of the hair to build texture.

He then applied Fekkai Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray throughout the rest of the hair and rough dried it to create a beachy and textured base for the up-do.

Adir then took random pieces and created standard braids, fishtail braids and twists throughout the hair in various sizes, leaving the very top of the hair loose.

He then took all of the hair except for the loose hair at the top, and knotted and twisted it to create an up-do.

He used hairpins to create a very undone look.

To finalize the look Adir backcombed the front of the hair to add volume, then pushed it back and pinned it in place.

He secured the look by spraying the hair with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray.

Look We Love: Evan Rachel Wood’s Short ‘n Sassy Strands

Aren’t you glad Evan Rachel Wood traded in her long lackluster locks for a cute cropped cut?

We certainly are. In fact, we’re head over heels in love with ERW’s shorter strands for two reasons: 1) We had absolutely NO idea just how gorgeous she is, and 2) Because she does more than just wear it straight. (We’re looking right at you Michelle Williams—and Carey Mulligan.)

Beauty Trend Spotting: Do The (French) Twist

Nicole Richie keeps getting better and better (beauty-wise).

Long gone are her ‘scary-skinny-with-straggly-strands’ days; the married mother of two has done a complete 180° and now gorgeously goes from strength to strength strolling down the red carpet—and the sidewalk.

Case in point: At Elle’s 18th Annual Women in Hollywood Tribute, Richie rocked a French twist—a look we’ve seen numerous times over the past two runway seasons, namely Peter Som and Jean Paul Gaultier for Fall/Winter 2011, and Badgley Mischka, Roberto Cavalli, and Dolce & Gabbana for Spring/Summer 2012.

One part swanky 60s, two-parts French fabulous, this structured updo lends an air of elegance to any look. We haven’t worn this hairstyle since junior prom, but seeing as how a refined resurgence on the horizon, we just might be persuaded to take a trip down our own personal mane memory lane.

Here’s How to Recreate The Sophisticated Style:
-Flip damp hair over your face and rough dry (sans brush) for added volume and texture;
-Flip it back and finger comb your strands over towards your right shoulder;
-Starting at the nape of your neck, loosely twist hair up towards your crown, securing every few inches with a bobby pin, which should be inserted diagonally;
-For a more refined look, flips the ends under and secure with a pin. For a funkier finish, leave your ends loose—they’ll look cool whether they’re straight and spiky or curly and carefree;
-To finish, pull a few pieces loose around your hairline to relax the look, or if you have fringe, brush your bangs over to the side. Mist with hairspray to set the ladylike look. —India-Jewel Jackson

Beauty Trend Spotting: Lacquered Locks

Between the messy side braid, the disheveled top knot, and tousled bedhead tresses, it’s truly hard to fathom why women still have bad hair days, and have yet to master the done-undone look.

Another chic and easy hairstyle to fallback on? The shiny slick back.

Seen all over the Fall 2011 runways (Ralph Lauren, Giambattista Valli, Mary Katrantzou, Salvatore Ferragamo, The Row), stars like Camilla Belle and Keira Knightley are starting to shellac their strands to their scalps as well. Such a laissez-faire, yet entirely appropriate red carpet look.

Get The Look in Three Swift Steps:
-Starting with damp hair, insert a deep side part and brush hair back into a low position.
-Maintain your wet look for the entire day by liberally coating strands with Redken Hardwear 16 Super Strong Sculpting Gel (available at Redken salons for $13).
-Tautly secure at the nape of your neck.

Finish your pared-down but perfect look with bold earrings, a bit of lipstick and blush, topped off with a few coats of mascara.
