When it was revealed that Sarah Burton was in town for the 2012 Met Gala, the first person on my wish list as her guest was Cate Blanchett.
Cate was her guest, indeed, taking to the red carpet wearing an Alexander McQueen Fall 2012 gown on Monday night.
The Australian actress wore the black feather gown with a dramatic ostrich hem without the tiered coat.
Had Lady Gaga worn this gown, I would imagine she would’ve worn the look as presented on the runway for a more dramatic effect; but Cate modified the look to suit her laidback, chic style.
Black t-bar Alexander McQueen Armadillo heel sandals and an Alexander McQueen black pom pom skull clutch plus Van Cleef & Arpels jewels accesorized her look.
A simple ponytail and barely-there makeup provided the finishing touches.

This look is nice but not amazing. The Fall and Spring collections weren’t too Cate Blanchett. This look is forgettable unfortunately.
No one is blown away, but she looks great.
Diane Kruger and Cate Blanchett really disappointed me tonight. Their looks is so boring when we compare to other attendees looks.
Yes, yes, yes. If they weren’t Cate Blanchett and Diane Kruger, I would say they looked fine, they did what was to be done. But from them… it is just not enough.
Better suited for last year’s Gala but only Cate and Gaga can rock this dress.
What a confident pose.
i love it!
I love this!!! I am totally blown away. Only a combination of Alexander McQueen and Cate can rock a black gown and make it stand out so much. My new favorite of the night!
It looks so effortless!
Just wish it wasn’t black.
+1
Lily Collins looked beautiful at the gala, defo my best dressed!
The hair is very Tilda Swinton.
What it must feel like to spend the evening in a feathery dress – i like it a lot it has a certain understatement that is quite enjoyable
I had to go to sleep last night half way through the live stream and to wake up to this as the first looks is amazing!! Personally I thnk this is totally stunning! Increidble start to the day!
I think Gaga would have pulled this off better.. with the cape. Its forgettable on Cate (gasp!can’t believe I said that)
what a trend these feather detailed hems were! Cate looks nice as people said but not amazing like she usually does plus she looks better on color
She’s beautiful and the dress is beautiful but it’s missing something. It needs a bit of drama. Maybe if it was a colour? Or there was one piece of statement jewellery, or her makeup was more vivid?
+1. There is a heaviness to this physically and emotionally it would indeed have been better suited to last years Gala. Would have preferred it more cut in at the shoulder.
FC this is more work than the Oscars! Thanks for all the images and points of few. You never let us down
.
thank you….still bloggin
She looks beautiful but I’m not loving this.
My BEST. OF. THE. NIGHT!!
& I thank the gods Gaga didn’t get her hands on it, her try-hard attitude would just make this a costume and a joke.
i am sorry i really hate this dress
Queen Cate never fails to amaze me!!!have you seen her face upclose??? absolutely stunning!
I just got chills! Cate looks great.
Yes. This helps erase the image of those awful LV looks she’s been obliged to wear. Love the easy confidence and erect bearing. Drama, not melodrama. Impeccable.
Incredible!!! Cate was amazing!!! I love this dress on her!!! Stunning!!!
I love the dramatic effect of the gown.Queen Blanchett rocks !
I love this, though I agree a little color would have been nice–maybe earrings or bracelet. She hasn’t looked this good in a while.
I really love this look. Cate can do no wrong in my eyes. I think that she looks amazing. That beign said, I don’t have goosebumps. I feel like (hope that) this is just a warm up for the Hobbit Promo tour.
I like it not love it and wish that it wasn’t black too.
FC, as Cate is one of your fashion idols (me too!), did you love this look, or merely like it?
Her presence and poise are so stunning!
I found the feathery skirt portion to look a bit too hairy…if it had been tulle I would have LOVED this look unabashedly. However, what more does anyone really need than Queen Cate + Alexander McQueen?
Hope she’s at Cannes!
I liked it. not many would’ve pulled it off
WOW. Cate was gorgeous. I loved her look. Stunning dress each year she is more and more beautiful. And she is the best actress ever !
Why, oh why didn’t she wear the jacket? As I said to another Kate (over the screen on her wedding day) “It’s McQueen darling. Go big or go home.”
She looks great and pulled it off well but I am not wowed like I was with Florence Welch in Mcqueen.
She looks great! I think she could have pulled off the runway look, too, but she looks perfect, anyway!
