Beyonce Knowles In Givenchy Couture – 2012 Met Gala

Beyonce Knowles stunned on the red carpet at the 2012 Met Gala held in New York on Monday evening.

I can only imagine the crowd’s reaction when Bey stepped on the red carpet showing off her post-baby body in a revealing Givenchy couture gown.

The showstopping look left little to the imagination with a sheer bodysuit covered in black lace and crystal embellishments, cascading into a skirt of black and purple feathers.

In contrast to the extreme dress, Beyonce let her natural beauty shine with barely-there makeup and a sleek ponytail.

It’s a bit over the top but I love the purple tail.

    • RoRo May 9, 2012 at 04:54 #

here it is in a beautiful blush color worn by Mariacarla Boscono last year at the 2011 Met Gala.

      http://modelcandids.com/2011/05/mariacarla-boscono-attends-the-met-costume-institute-gala-2011/mariacarla-boscono-attends-the-met-costume-institute-gala-2011-2/

this is a close-up of her (better than the one i posted below) and the detailing is gorgeous. the underlay matches her to perfection thereby eliminating the hoochie look that plagues beyonce’s version. i just hate to see beautiful masterpieces done wrong.

      • JazzyFash May 9, 2012 at 05:01 #

I completely agree with you @RoRo. She shouldn’t have worn the gown a year after it was originally worn at the same gala. Maybe she thought it would be received differently in a different color. Aside from that, she is too big to make it work…top heavy and bottom heavy. its why she looks sown into and the corset is tiiiight! the blush dress looks elegant while beyonce makes this dress look trashy. a pity.

    I’m reconsidering to become straight

  3. Prudence May 8, 2012 at 06:23 #

I do not like this at all. the nude bodysuit? completely destroys this for me. its the second year in a row she goes with some over the top gowns and fails. weirdly beyonce can never pull off these extravagant couture gowns. shes a diva. give her some tight fitting strapless versace dress.

    • Dani May 8, 2012 at 07:38 #

I agree. The nude lining is the worst and it all just seems a bit ‘look at me’. You are BEYONCE, we WILL be looking – you don’t need to try so hard.

      • Lidka May 8, 2012 at 21:28 #

This look is disastrous. Why does she keep on wearing this kind of dresses all the time? Last year she couldn’t move in her dress and she hasn’t learnt a lesson from it. Bad choice all over.

      • Lidka May 8, 2012 at 21:32 #

Kristen Stewart looked classy and chic when she wore a dress from the same collection. Beyonce’s look is all wrong and tacky.

someone mentioned it looked better on MARIACARLA BOSCONO…when i looked for her online i was surprised to find out MARIACARLA wore it at last year’s MET GALA. and she looked utterly amazing! she is a model so i would have preferred to see it on ZOE SALDANA before BEYONCE based purely on body type. it would have covered her derriere better and the nude would have matched better.

      • RoRo May 9, 2012 at 04:45 #

        http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2011/05/03/models-the-met/

eight picture boxes down first on the right…
boscono wore it immaculately. it skimmed her body with just the right fit. the bodysuit is not tight (or holding on for dear life) and is undetectable. as it should be. my vote is to have had rihanna (purple and black) or zoe saldana (blush colored) wear it…

  4. Christine May 8, 2012 at 06:27 #

This is how you shut a place down! Save the best dress for last. She is one of the last–if not thee last-to arrived :D My girl Bey is putting in work in that dress. Say what you want, but she owned it!!!

  5. Vera May 8, 2012 at 06:27 #

This woman is a fashion killer.

    • M. May 8, 2012 at 08:20 #

In the good sense or in the bad sense? Because my eyes are still recovering…

For me with Bey is always hit and miss. I love her when she keeps things simple

      • Vera May 8, 2012 at 12:40 #

The worst sense. Almost everything Beyonce wears she makes look cheap.

        • serenissima May 8, 2012 at 20:01 #

agree. she is very, very tacky. And consistently.

          • RoRo May 8, 2012 at 23:02 #

she looks VERY tacky. frankly, the angle of her from the back is gross. she wore ANOTHER bodysuit and she shouldn’t have so soon after a pregnancy.

  6. ash May 8, 2012 at 06:30 #

Omg, I love it! Though I think I would’ve loved it more in the flesh tone.. So many black Givenchy couture dresses last night! Bey, Gisele Bundchen, Rooney Mara and Liv Tyler! All of them looked really good (Well, Liv could’ve been better)..

  7. Mandy May 8, 2012 at 06:31 #

I love Beyonce. I think she is a fantastic woman. But I hate her in this dress. She can do so much better. I think this is the worst red carpet attempt on the “sheer dress” department.

    • Gloria May 8, 2012 at 06:47 #

I agree with you, Mandy. There was way too much going on with this dress, though I like all the parts. I am no fan of Gwynneth Paltrow, but her sleek look at the gala makes this get-up look like someone tried way too hard. Sorry Beyonce fans.

    • Lisa May 8, 2012 at 15:50 #

I agree. I HATE this look. It looks trashy. She can do so much better.

  8. pipsqueak May 8, 2012 at 06:32 #

Stunning! B looked sexy yet still graceful. Also love the sleek ponytail and lack of accessories.

  9. firien May 8, 2012 at 06:35 #

    I honestly think it’s ugly.

    • Linda May 8, 2012 at 12:17 #

Me too. I first saw it from the back and thought ugh, who is that wearing that tacky dress? When I realized it was Beyonce, it made sense because she often goes over the top in skin tight, sexy dresses that are just too much. There is so much going on. There is too much sheerness. The colours are jarring. Her sister’s dress (such a different personal style and much more interesting) is so much nicer than this because it’s not screaming for attention. I really don’t like this at all.

      • Rebecca Z May 8, 2012 at 17:05 #

I totally agree-Solange looked lovely–this is just tastless sensationalism. It isn’t flattering–just for attention. I thought she had more class than this.

      • Linda May 9, 2012 at 00:43 #

Okay, I feel compelled to comment on my comment – I just saw Beyonce in an interview at the Met Gala and she was so lovely and sweet that I now feel thoroughly ashamed of myself for the harshness of my comment.

It’s true that I don’t like this dress or appreciate most of her taste in clothing, but there’s a way to express that more neutrally and respectfully. Sorry Beyonce!

    • Eve May 8, 2012 at 12:21 #

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I even thought that it was one of her mother’s creation.

  10. Tiffany May 8, 2012 at 06:35 #

    What a comeback!

  11. CC May 8, 2012 at 06:38 #

this dress is not flattering on her. this dress wld look better on a stick thin model.

    CC

  12. Tina May 8, 2012 at 06:40 #

I think her relatively fit and slender “post-baby look” is helped by the fact that she is probably wearing some sort of corset beneath that dress. The way her hips flair out is not very natural.

This dress has too much going on at the same time, what with the black detail embroidery and the ostrich feathers – although I do applaud her for keeping the hair and makeup simple in contrast to such a complicated outfit.

  13. vicky May 8, 2012 at 06:54 #

    Big no.
She’s got an amazing and enviable figure but that corset is ruining it. In the close up you see the corset it too tight on her waist as her hips pokes out and makes it look really weird.
And then all that lace detail and all the feathers, just no, too much (which often is the case with Beyonce).

  14. Gail May 8, 2012 at 06:55 #

It’s interesting reading the comments here, because lots of people on twitter H-A-T-E this look, I mean people were getting into twitter beefs, LOL.

I thought the dress looked ok from the front, but the back was too much; if she was on stage performing I could understand, but for the MET, she should have done something different

  15. Riley May 8, 2012 at 07:01 #

I think she looks amazing except for the nude bodysuit. I don’t know how they could’ve not included it, but I don’t like it as it is too visible.

Other than that she looks amazing and I like the gown. I first thought this was Prabal Gurung.

  16. Amy May 8, 2012 at 07:02 #

there’s a lot in that dress: sheer, sequins, details, feathers, nude it’s a bit too much for me. I’m sorry but Bee gets a thumb down for this

  17. Asia May 8, 2012 at 07:31 #

Love it! The dress looks fantastic on her. I’m glad she opted for a sleek hairstyle and natural make up.

  18. MEME May 8, 2012 at 07:39 #

I’m impartial about this look…. I give her kudos for going for DRAMA because of the event…. and I like the train…. but this dress is all sorts of confusing…. I think if she was a bit taller and the size she was during her Master Cleanse days… it might have worked…. Also the front view of the dress makes her look very short…. and the sleeves are too much…. I wish embroidery at the top was different with a different neckline…. and she should’ve worn a different nude toned leotard under that dress because it’s a bit lighter than her complexion…. the only pro is that this year she can actually walk up the stairs in her dress…

  19. sarah May 8, 2012 at 07:44 #

    She is stunning!!
    Love everything
As long as She feels beautiful in what she is wearing that’s all that matters to me.
She radiates confidence , she is glowing!

  20. Andrea May 8, 2012 at 07:55 #

She looks amazing! Wow. But I was looking at the other pictures of her at gettyimages and her hands seems to be glued to her hips. Strange.

  21. bm May 8, 2012 at 08:10 #

Ok, i found my nominees for worst dress tonight.

  22. Ange May 8, 2012 at 08:15 #

    OMG what a fashion moment!

  23. Saree May 8, 2012 at 08:37 #

    One word for me:

    Ew.

I just do not like her fashion one bit. I don’t even want to go into depth – a comment above about being a fashion killer is quite close. Her fashion label for example, whatever it’s called (I forgot) is just completely wrong.

I know this isn’t one of those dresses – I think Gaga could’ve pulled this off better and that’s saying something. She has become too try-hard since starring on Telephone.

  24. Emi May 8, 2012 at 08:38 #

This proves again that this woman has absolutely non sens eof style. It’s NY not Tackyville. This gown is hard to pull off but she totally Killed it. Awful.

  25. cat May 8, 2012 at 09:08 #

    too much mesh!!

  26. TheSuperfairy May 8, 2012 at 09:49 #

The bodysuit killed the look definitely. Thick and uncomfortable-looking, but I guess she needed all that squeezing from just under the shoulder-blades until her hips to keep everything in shape (kind of). It looks really uncomfortable from up-close. But from far … the nude illusion the gown gives off is breathtaking!

  27. Nat May 8, 2012 at 09:55 #

Well, I guess this is an improvement from last year, in the sense that at least this time she didn’t need TWO people to literally shove her up the stairs…
…however, this gown is quite ugly.

  28. T from Sydney May 8, 2012 at 10:15 #

her sister had a better dress and styling.

this is not a good look.

  29. LizLemooooon May 8, 2012 at 10:26 #

    YAAAAAASSSSS!

She SLAYED! Showed up last like the diva she is and went BIG.
This is high glamour, sexy, showbiz, fashionable and her body looks outrageous in it.
It would be an incredibly dull fashion event if everyone went for the same boring minimalist looks and I’m glad we had someone to bring out some HIGH glam. Love the ombre feather details and the heavy embellishment. She looks fantastic and it’s nice to see her with such low-key make up to offset the look properly.

    Thanks for the coverage FC!

  30. lily May 8, 2012 at 10:52 #

nope.. it’s not a good look for her n the nude lining just make it worse, love the purple train though..

  31. Binkie May 8, 2012 at 11:31 #

AHHHHHH!!! What you Blue Ivy think?
    Beyonce you look hideous

  32. Rory May 8, 2012 at 11:33 #

I love her and always look for her on the red carpet, unfortunately more often than not she is wearing something hideous. This ties with last year’s travesty of a Miss Tina concocted Pucci gown. Sad times.

  33. Jones19 May 8, 2012 at 11:58 #

The nude bodysuit being so obvious bothers me a little but I’m willing to overlook that because she’s so beautiful here!

  34. Andreea May 8, 2012 at 12:57 #

Sorry but she looks like a turkey..

  35. Incroyable May 8, 2012 at 13:02 #

The only thing “stunning” about this is how bad it looks. In this catastrophe she should have sneaked in through the service entrance, or stay home and reprimand her “stylist.”
A black body suit may have made this better, but nothing could save it. If the designer wasn’t announced, this could have easily been her mom’s design. TACKY!

The dress, I love: pure Givenchy, pure Met Gala. Beyonce? Yes I love her too, as an artist and admirable business and family woman of the ‘now’. However together, definitely not the best team of the night and may I add Im tired of us justifying B´s fashion crimes just because it seems harsh to hate on her.

    1. The ‘nude’ lining just isn´t nude enough.
    2. Too loose, ill fitted seams surrounding her shoulders and underarms.
    3. Her core/waist area looked at from both the front and back seem too wide, when I think this dress is meant to give the opposite, figure hugging, petite effect. She has an enviable body pre and post baby Blue, but I agree with comments above that some things are meant to be worn by slenderer bodies in the same way that some things are not.
    4. Her make up is the other thing that just isn´t nude enough. Yes, it´s ‘barely there’ until we get to her coral lips: the stunning purple feather train was all the colour this look needed.

Unfortunately, I could go on. I wish she would take tips from her close friend Gwyneth Paltrow, who bizarely enough bores me to death professionaly but between Oscars and Met has already pulled two BDOTY nominations, at least from my behalf.

  37. Alina May 8, 2012 at 13:14 #

    I’m on the fence.

What do you think about this one, FC?

    • Fashion Critic May 8, 2012 at 13:32 #

not her best, but not the worst on the night

  38. Grace Patricia May 8, 2012 at 14:07 #

I don’t like it at all, but I never like anything Beyoncé wears. The lining is awful, the loose fit on the shoulders and I guess she’s curvy but looks really big on this dress.

  39. dee May 8, 2012 at 14:12 #

    This is terrible.

  40. John Johnson May 8, 2012 at 15:06 #

How many birds had to die to get Beyonce to look like that?

  41. Fashionista May 8, 2012 at 15:36 #

Well, when I first saw it I thought how could B let Tina dress her for this? She should know better. I have always believed that when designers put out the dresses. there are some that are just there for the visual high. Not actually meant to be worn by most but usually just a feast for the eyes. Models could wear a dress like this. It is very unforgiving of curves. Beyonce is not short. but she is curvy and it detracts from her height. And this dress is just not helping her in any way. Also, one can go Drama without going tacky. Beyonce needs to learn that. I also think that once designer make it big, they are more likely to put out utter crap because they know the can get away with it. And that what I think this might be.

  42. Joy May 8, 2012 at 15:55 #

Oh Wow. This is horrible! Hideous in fact. She doesn’t elegant or sexy, but instead tragically trashy. I think it is very unflattering for her gorgous curves and don’t even get me started on the drag queen purple feathers. BTW, I love feathers in fashion more than most. Pretty makeup and hair though!

  43. Gillian May 8, 2012 at 16:04 #

I usually don’t like Bey, but she is QUEEN tonight, for me. Tonight is all abut pushing fashion boundaries and bringing out couture. I mean, I would presume that a lot of Givenchy looks presented on the runway would have even more skin showing, Idk, the clever and beautiful way of teasing Givenchy achieves with this look is beautiful for me. Maybe for the oscars or any other awards show this would be D:, but for tonight, she nailed it for me.

  44. Yeliz May 8, 2012 at 16:05 #

She shouldn’t try so hard to get every attention in these kinda events. I’m on the fence too but I think I more likely don’t like it. To be obvious, the nude bodysuit just ruins it.

  45. bee7 May 8, 2012 at 16:20 #

can she even sit down in this dress?

  46. justme May 8, 2012 at 16:45 #

I wish the bodysuit was closer to her skintone but I still love this look. It’s the MET gala, I’m not here for boring gowns, I want dramaaaa.
I do like the natural make up and simple hair though.

If it was Diane Kruger, some of you would be jizzing in their pants right now lol.

    • serenissima May 8, 2012 at 20:04 #

but Diane Kruger has a completely different body type than Bey… it might look jizzworthy on her. lol.

      • justme May 8, 2012 at 22:05 #

lol I would agree if it wasn’t a long sleeve, floor length gown. It’s the perfect dress for body types to be irrelevant.
I don’t know, it feels like bias to me.

  47. Zineb May 8, 2012 at 16:49 #

Next ! Not liking it at all except for the tail.

  48. britta May 8, 2012 at 17:26 #

this dress is the whole purpose for the met gala! bravo b on dressing for the occasion!
..one small little gripe? i wish the bodysuit had been black.

  49. weiz May 8, 2012 at 18:35 #

Late but,Mariacarla Boscono did look better when she wore this gown last year.

  50. jK May 8, 2012 at 18:49 #

I found it extremely ironic to see her L’Oreal True Match foundation ad playing right next to her mismatched nude body suit.

  51. Sarah-Leigh Gangadeen May 8, 2012 at 19:11 #

She is so pretty.. it’s a shame about the dress.

  52. serenissima May 8, 2012 at 19:58 #

her BUTT IS OUT. she looks completely ridiculous… like someone playing dress up. No, no, no.

  53. Carolina Roq May 8, 2012 at 21:56 #

  54. Nia May 8, 2012 at 22:23 #

Oh no,not good! Tacky. Look and learn from your sister, Beyonce.

  55. Parvati May 8, 2012 at 22:41 #

The gown is very impressive, but I think I would prefer to see it on another celebrity rather than on Beyonce. For some reason, I feel this particular gown is not really her style. At least, she did good by not adding any accessories to it.

  56. Felicia May 8, 2012 at 22:53 #

This is all sorts of trashy and cheap!

    Okay, my eyes hurt now

  57. EmmaWoodhouse May 8, 2012 at 23:17 #

Hideous and trashy. She and Leighton are tying for worst right now…
I have rarely seen Bey look so bad. Even last year’s dress was better than this.

  58. Jess2 May 9, 2012 at 01:34 #

So this definitely appears to be a love/hate look. I love it, Bey totally owned this look and this dress is awesome and so on point for the Met Gala. She is so gorgeous

  59. Tina May 9, 2012 at 02:47 #

Love B, but “edgy” is just not for her. Obviously the bodysuit kills the look, but also from the neck up she’s all girl-next-door. Would have loved to see this gown on someone else.

  60. Dhppy May 9, 2012 at 03:02 #

I’m not surprised that she’s wearing a bodysuit, Beyonce loves a bodysuit. What surprises me is that it wasn’t made to match her actual skin color. She really must be a sweetheart because a true diva would have gotten in someone’s face at Givenchy and explained “nude” isn’t nude on everyone. The are other problems: the back isn’t anywhere near as interesting as the front of the gown, and the purple feathers seem to come from nowhere. I don’t hate it, but it’s still a bit of a miss.

  61. onionviper May 9, 2012 at 03:38 #

lol her fans can try to make her look ok, but this is totally disgusting lol

  62. robbie May 9, 2012 at 09:45 #

beyonce makes this dress look like it belongs in some cheap drag queen in vegas. mariacarla looked so much better in this dress.

  63. Annel May 9, 2012 at 11:56 #

What a mess. Makes me think of earlier creations from when her mom styled her.

  64. KjenNu May 9, 2012 at 16:22 #

Took me a little while to put my finger on why exactly I don’t like the look. I just don’t like how restrained Beyonce looks in it, like she has to be careful about her every move. The dress has enough slink that makes me think about ease and movement, but she’s holding herself so tightly together, the look is no longer about fun and spontaneity but about discipline and frigidity.

  65. Eileen May 9, 2012 at 20:56 #

I remember the last Met Gala where wore a dress so tight that she couldnt walk up the stairs. And also got booed by the paparazzi.

  66. Mzzdanderous May 9, 2012 at 22:37 #
