As much as I’ve resigned myself to the fact that Nicola Coughlan has a love affair with black on the red carpet—and, in fairness, she does make it endlessly intriguing—I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to see her dabbling in the joy of colour again.

For the Day Five photocall at the 2025 Canneseries International Festival, Nicola delivered a surprise sartorial switch-up in a custom Mithridate Fall 2025 green sequined column dress, draped with a soft pink cardigan tied ever-so-chicly around her shoulders. It’s giving 1950s-early-60s glamour with a playful beachside twist, and it couldn’t be more perfect for the relaxed Riviera setting. Sequins in the sunshine? Yes please. That cardigan? The cherry on a very vintage sundae.

While I’m confident Nicola could have made black work even here—her track record proves that—this colourful turn feels like a breath of fresh sea air. The green glistened just enough to nod to evening wear without feeling overdressed for a daytime photocall, and the cardigan added a charming sense of ease, like she just stepped off a yacht.

Her cat-eye Le Specs sunglasses completed the old-Hollywood feel without feeling like costume, adding a layer of Riviera cool that made the whole look sing. And let’s not overlook the small but mighty detail: Nicola continues to wear her “Artists for Ceasefire” red pin.
