Aubrey Plaza Timeless Old Hollywood Red Lip For The Spirit Awards

Aubrey Plaza exuded all things classy and timeless at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards with her beautifully flawless skin, piercing sultry eyes, and that iconic old-Hollywood red lip.

Makeup artist Kathy Jeung (@kathyjeung) gave us a step-by-step on how she achieved this perfect red carpet look, exclusively using products from Urban Decay.

“My makeup inspiration was the perfectly shaped strong red lip and strong smokey eye captured in Helmut Newton’s iconic “Le Smoking” photograph of Yves St Laurent’s groundbreaking androgynous tuxedo that Aubrey’s St Laurent suit pays homage to.”

“My star product in this makeup look is Urban Decay’s Lip Bond! The “Unbreakable” vibrant red color is my new favorite shade of red and the formula truly is intense but truly budge-proof! The doe-foot applicator makes application a breeze!”

Step 1: Flawless Skin
Urban Decay’s All Nighter Face Primer Longwear Foundation Grip is a sheer formula hydrating primer that readies skin and “grips” foundation, strengthening it’s longevity UD Stay Naked Foundation is a weightless matte finish, medium coverage waterproof longwear foundation that is flexible and not heavy. I used shade “31NN” on Aubrey

Step 2: Brows
I like to do the eye makeup after foundation, before concealer, so next up was shaping Aubrey’s eyebrows, using Urban Decay’s Brow Blade in “Neutral Nana”. My pro-tip is to brush brows down with a clean mascara spooly brush. It helps me see where a person’s eyebrow needs shape and addition. Urban Decay’s Brow Blade is a 2-in-1 brow styler, using the waterproof pencil end, I softly drew in where hairs might be lacking and create a balanced eyebrow shape, then brushed up and then used the waterproof ink stain brush to create super fine microblade-like individual hairs!

Step 3: Piercing Eyes
I’m in love with Urban Decay’s 24/7 Shadow Sticks because my favourite eyeshadow technique is to use a cream shadow before powder eyeshadow: cream acts as an adherent and adds intensity and depth. After creating a smooth surface with the illusion of depth in the hollow below brow bone with “Sweet” neutral matte colour from UD Naked Honey Palette, I then swept UD 24/7 Shadow Stick in “Roach” across lids and brush blended into a soft outward wing shape. Over that I applied “Burn” from UD Naked Reloaded Palette, further blending up and out. For eye highlight, I added UD 24/7 Shadow Stick in “Riveting” to the inner eye corner to open up the eye area. Along upper lashline goes the super-staying power of UD 24/7 Pencil in “Zero” a classic matte black shade to anchor the smokey-eyed look. Over that I smudged the pencil line with UD 24/7 Shadow in “Blackout”. Along the lower lash line, I again used UD 24/7 Shadow Stick in “Roach” on a small brush to give a softer intensity. After curling lashes, mascara completes the eye look, I used Urban Decay’s Volumizing Waterproof Mascara.

Step 4: Concealer
UD Stay Naked Quickie Concealer using 20CP is a unique new multi-use waterproof product, it’s a concealer that also has a brush applicator on the other end to apply and blend full coverage camouflage beyond just under eyes!

Step 4: Contour, Cheeks, Highlight
I used UD Stay Naked Threesome in “Naked” – this 3-in-1 product is all I needed to create shade, glow and colour! The matte shadow shade along the jawline, under the chin and hollow of her cheekbones creates. Next the peachy pink shade on the cheek area blends and joins and the highlight on the tops of cheekbones adds glow!

Step 5: Bronze
UD Beached Bronzer in “Sun-kissed” lightly dusted across temples and lower cheeks to add a hint of warm bronzed glow .

Step 6: Old Hollywood Red Lip
Starting with UD 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in “Bad Blood” to define the lip line. UD Lip Bond in “Unbreakable” is tonight’s star product! This liquid lip formula glides on and doesn’t feather, flake or budge…at all!

Step 7: Setting Spray + Touchup
A final spritz of UD Setting Spray helps skin prone to excess shine last all night. UD All-Nighter Waterproof Setting Powder compact for Aubrey to take with her to check makeup and powder T-Zone if necessary.
