Elizabeth Banks In Elie Saab Couture – ‘Love & Mercy’ Berlin Film Festival Premiere

Posted by Catherine Kallon

'Love & Mercy' Photocall - 65th Berlinale International Film Festival

Elizabeth Banks attended the ‘Love & Mercy’ photocall and premiere during the 65th Berlinale International Film Festival held at Friedrichstadt-Palast on Sunday (February 8) in Berlin, Germany.

Proving to be quite a worthy ambassador for the Elie Saab brand, the actress did what she does best—blow me away.

Her crimson ombre, voluminous tulle, and lace Fall 2014 couture gown featured a bodice fully embroidered with pearls and sequins. This will definitely find pride of place in her red carpet Hall of Fame.

I actually prefer this gown to her ‘Hunger Games’ London premiere gown. Perhaps because of its quintessential “King of Bling” feel or the way she is working the hell out of the look.

Ruby lips and matching Rauwolf clutch rounded out her look.

It will be hard for anyone, including Elizabeth herself, to top this one. But I hope many will rise to the challenge.

Love Elie Saab. Love Elizabeth Banks. But I think, because of the rich color and the grand pose, EB made this look more imposing than it really is. It’s just okay for me.

  2. Leila February 12, 2015 at 8:58 pm #

Flawless? BDOTY? Seriosuly? We have seen this dress like zillions of times before. This is almost becoming a joke.

  3. JLD February 11, 2015 at 8:40 pm #

I swear this is the 100th time I’ve seen a variation of this gown. The magic is just completely lost on me at this point.

  4. Carrie February 11, 2015 at 7:27 pm #

    Flawless. BDOTY nominee.

  5. Phoenix February 11, 2015 at 2:26 pm #

She knows how to work the rc better than anyone , thats for sure. Gorgeous h2t! Even though I’ve seen a hundred variations of this dress before, its her presentation of it, and the rich color thats getting me.
I can totally understand why this would be on peoples bdotw n bdoty. Worthy.

  6. mattison February 11, 2015 at 12:50 pm #

Elizabeth Banks can do no wrong in my eyes. This is stunning. I’m just gonna call it- this is the first of multiple BDOTY looks from her.

  7. Valissa February 11, 2015 at 5:30 am #

She’s way overdressed but you gotta hand it to Elizabeth – she’s not getting invited to the Oscars or any other major award show so she makes the most of her red carpet moments!
If I had the opportunity to wear Elie Saab couture I would probably wear it to a dinner party and not care about who was judging me…so good for her!
She looks fantastic. It’s a gorgeous gown even if is the “same old, same old” from Saab. I never tire from his perfectly crafted gowns anyway, they always bring beauty and glamour to the RC so I don’t complain.

We’ve had a long run of repetitive Elie Saab gowns, but this one made me take notice. Majestic, the beauty look really makes it but it’s mostly about her presence and the way she carries this.

  9. Prudence February 11, 2015 at 12:54 am #

    YAWN.

She should stop wearing Elie Saab. They all blend into one for me. I am beyond sick of the heavy beading and that silhouette. I liked her style so much better before when she wore these less obvious designers.

  10. liz February 10, 2015 at 10:00 pm #

why would this be hard to top? just pick another poufy elie saab dress and you’re done.

  11. TeaAtTwo February 10, 2015 at 8:14 pm #

I love this. Definitely a BDOTY nominee.

  12. Britta February 10, 2015 at 7:55 pm #

For me this is a best dressed of the year look! Fabulous!

  13. Bailey February 10, 2015 at 7:13 pm #

A nice look, maybe too much embellishment for me

  14. Zineb February 10, 2015 at 7:02 pm #

You need to be out of this world sensational to be a 2015 BDTOY contender, if not winner as early as in February. And Elizabeth managed to be out of this world sensational. It’s because of moments like these that Elie Saab will forever be a red carpet KING !

  15. AB February 10, 2015 at 6:54 pm #

I love it when an actress is not afraid to dress like a movie star.

  16. Marcel February 10, 2015 at 6:03 pm #

Oh, the heavy beading and crystals all over again. BIG NOOOOOOOOO for me. I am sooo over this silhouette. Just NO. NO. NO.
    Neck up she looks gorgeous.

    • Marcel February 10, 2015 at 6:05 pm #

Plus, the texture on the top resembles an horrible skin disease spreading around. IRCK !!!

  17. dee February 10, 2015 at 5:58 pm #

She looks regal. This is a BDOTY contender for me too.

  18. m February 10, 2015 at 5:48 pm #

bdoty worthy for me.. she totally blows me away in this… say what u want, overdressed, cant get on board or whatever… this is fashion.. there are no rules…. if she looks this great, she can be overdressed for any photocall or premiere and i still love her…

  19. justme February 10, 2015 at 5:47 pm #

    Marvelous. I love it.

  20. Yeliz February 10, 2015 at 5:18 pm #

Wow, just.. WOW. How many times did I use this word today? I can’t even count anymore, this day was full with BDOTY-worthy looks and Elizabeth is the cherry on top.
This is divine, perfection. She looks so regal, I’m in love.

  21. pinksugar February 10, 2015 at 5:09 pm #

Flawless perfection from head to toe. One of her very best ever.

  22. nof February 10, 2015 at 5:08 pm #

    She looks gorgeous, no doubt.

But somehow I always have a feeling she is trying way too hard every time she steps out… Her looks SCREAM for attention, even when the attire is not as grand as she makes it look…

    She looks mazing anyway

  23. Clara February 10, 2015 at 5:00 pm #

Defiantly? I know this is a fashion site but I expected better spelling.

    • Catherine Kallon February 10, 2015 at 5:09 pm #

      Clara, thanks for the correction.

Having worked Saturday, 24 hours on the BAFTAs & Grammys fatigue got the better of me.

      I wish you well.

Hi FC, I’ll be your guardian proofreading angel 🙂 PS I use your site for English lessons because you write so well. Regards.

      • Nadine February 10, 2015 at 9:17 pm #

FC, you are a classy gal. Can’t believe nobody’s mentioned the pockets – how cool is that?

  24. julyol1972 February 10, 2015 at 4:53 pm #

    Stunning!

  25. Maria February 10, 2015 at 4:36 pm #

    QUEEN

  26. Diamondbus February 10, 2015 at 4:25 pm #

    BDOTY worthy

  27. Rebecca Z February 10, 2015 at 4:23 pm #

    Gorgeous. She always brings it.

  28. Ana February 10, 2015 at 4:12 pm #

I lose my breath everytime I look at this… BDOTY!! Glorious!!

  29. Ramsay February 10, 2015 at 4:04 pm #

To each his favorite – but for me after seeing Natalie’s elegant, simple but stunning Lanvin earlier today this just feels too blingy and too grant with the embellishment and the volume – there always seems to be no restraint with Elizabeth – in that sense she reminds me of Fan Bing Bing (but with better shoes) – I will forget, assume others won’t – again to each his favorite – Elizabeth always seems to be trying too hard imo and she can never get me on board because of it

    • Ramsay February 10, 2015 at 4:06 pm #

      *forget it

    • Erykah February 10, 2015 at 4:52 pm #

I totally agree with everything you said. I’m at the point of almost rolling my eyes whenever I see what she is wearing. Her choices aren’t necessarily bad but there is always an air of try-hard with her.

    • SilentVisitor February 11, 2015 at 2:36 am #

and every single time you write the same comment…..the weird thing is, it is always on Elizabeth Banks’ posts.

Anyway, she looks amazing………….tough BDOTW poll ahead: Elizabeth Vs Lea ( vs Rihanna maybe and the ladies from NAACP and Goya). What an amazing week!!!!

  30. Nicky February 10, 2015 at 3:53 pm #

She looks stunning, but it’s a little too grand for a photocall. I wish she had worn it only for the premiere.

  31. Nadia February 10, 2015 at 3:28 pm #

YES !!! She looks like a queen.
Seriously, when I see her in this gown, I’m thinking Grace Kelly.

  32. Jess2 February 10, 2015 at 3:27 pm #

    YES!! Flawless!

  33. Cookie February 10, 2015 at 3:22 pm #

This and Lea Seydoux’s BAFTAs look are my early contenders for BDOTY

  34. Anne February 10, 2015 at 3:17 pm #

She looks undeniably lovely, but just as quickly as my ES fatigue waned, it’s back again. I feel like I’ve seen this gown from him. In fact, for me it’s reminiscent of a red Elie Saab gown I prefer: Pink’s red, beaded Academy Awards dress.

    • Lashae February 10, 2015 at 3:48 pm #

mte. I’m really tired of ES and that really never has happen before.

    • Kate February 10, 2015 at 5:36 pm #

      +2
I’m a huge fan of Elie Saab, but this particular gown is just exhausting. I SHOULD love this, but I don’t, because it’s too…well, easy. It’s easy to look good in this silhouette + color + ES embroidery. Elizabeth looks just as good as any other actress who’s worn this type of ES dress before. Her Hunger Games ES dress in 2014 was a different story because it was a unique print.

Not gonna be on my BDOTY. In fact, there were several looks at the Goya awards that had more impact on me.

    • amy February 11, 2015 at 1:08 pm #

preach sister! preach. I can’t even pretend to be excited by this cause I’ve seen so many iterations of this dress, designed by ES or not.She looks lovely but that’s it for me

  35. Pedro February 10, 2015 at 3:15 pm #

    Wow

    This is epic! BDOTY already
I love the fact that she gave us at least one BDOTY every year

  36. Lee-Shay February 10, 2015 at 3:15 pm #

Goddam woman! This is BDOTY worthy for me. Perfection from head to toe.

  37. kane February 10, 2015 at 3:13 pm #

I’m having a bit of a thing for RED at the moment so I’ll have that one. Wrestling down a bit of a yawn though too.

  38. Sanya February 10, 2015 at 3:12 pm #

What a day today!? So many great looks. This is just amazing.

  39. Nat39 February 10, 2015 at 3:10 pm #

I also prefer this one, it suits her much more. She is working it to perfection. A h2t showstopper.

  40. Christine February 10, 2015 at 3:06 pm #

    Goosebumps!!!!

I mean can we say BDOTY worthy?? YES!

    • Rashmi February 10, 2015 at 4:27 pm #

Major Goosebumps!! I live to see red carpet moments like this!! It’s hard for anyone to beat this BDOTY..
