Miley Cyrus In Markus Lupfer – 2013 American Music Awards

Miley Cyrus In Markus Lupfer - 2013 American Music Awards

After surprising us all with a demure Versus Versace white suit on the red carpet, Miley Cyrus changed into something more, well, Miley-esque for her performance at the 2013 American Music Awards held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Having just turned 21 this weekend, the singer hit the stage for a performance of her smash hit ‘Wrecking Ball’ wearing a custom Markus Lupfer ‘meow’ top and high-waisted panties featuring a cat print, which she styled with matching platform shoes, PVC oversized earrings and bracelets.

As much as she may believe, there is nothing sexy or appealing about this look.

The bigger question is when did it become mandatory for celebs to perform in their underwear?

Sadly it is not male celebs who feel the need to perform in their underwear only females, but who buy’s Miley’s records, mostly girls I imagine. Why then the semi nudity – designed to titillate men, because it appeals to the dirty old men who edit newspapers and run the media generally I imagine.
We will really know that equality has arrived when One Direction perform in their speedos.

Wow FC your readers really have their pitchforks out on this one. I think this is fine for a performance look.

This is very vulgar, but I’m not surprised. Some people think that she’s just “exploring” her new self, she wants to be free and bla bla bla. To me, she’s just a very young girl with terrible taste for clothes who need to draw attention since she doesn’t have anymore Disney to do it for her.
Who can take her for serious as an artist if she puts every efforts in drawing attention on her sick behavior? What kind of parents does she have?

why should we be blaming Miley when the ones to blame are the “iconic” women she grew up listening to such as Madonna, Kylie, J Lo and Beyonce who are hailed as legends and leaders of the “women empowerment” movement! they all showed us their panties before her!
I don’t understand how Beyonce or “Queen B” is empowering women when she is performing on stage in an outfit that barely covers her breasts or behind! what message does that send to her 2 years old daughter and to all the young girls who think she’s a “role model”?!
the problem is that those stars think that only their super cute innocent music loving fans will see them in these outfits… and they forget that also pedophiles, perverts, sex addicts and rapists will also be seeing them!
i’m sorry but dressing like this on stage is NOT ok.. and it will never be ok. it’s disgusting and no it doesn’t fall under “freedom of expression”!!

Miley isn’t flaunting herself for the sake of empowerment because, like you said before, the women who came before her already paved the road. Madonna and Beyonce actually make music that deal with social issues like feminism/gender roles. And along with that came the provocative outfits, but at least they were in good taste. Miley’s getups are both revealing and ridiculous, and worst of all she thinks she’s doing something revolutionary. She does what she does to get attention (following the old saying “all press is good press”), not to bring to light something she stands for.

    Extremely vulgar

  6. KatieKate November 26, 2013 at 05:25 #

I also have to mention that this was the wierdest concept for a performance. I mean, listen to the serious, emotional nature of the song, not to mention what she has already said about it being super emotional for her, as an artist. And then she wears this highly cheeky, comical, flagrantly in your face outfit, plus the lip-synching kitty in the background? It’s like an acid trip. Not an artist’s creative vision. She’s so….I just have no words.

    • Kathy November 26, 2013 at 20:40 #

I completely agree. It’s actually an emotional song that’s full of impact, so treat it like one. That was my problem with her music video too…hyper-sexualizing something that’s supposed to be about pain and loss? That’s not art, that’s just begging for attention.

JLo, a woman twice Miley’s age, looked much sexier in her bathing suit performance attire. It’s time for Miley to admit that she’s trying to hard and yielding far too little appreciation.

  8. Joy November 25, 2013 at 20:52 #

I gotta say, I very much loved reading everyones comments. Ditto. What everybody else said.

Unfortunately, I just don’t see how this ‘less is more’ trend is ever going to go away when everyone is trying so hard to one up the competition, and when youth and skin sells.

Oh and she got what she wanted, we are all still talking about her AGAIN on a Monday morning.

    • JJ November 26, 2013 at 00:51 #

Of all the ‘sex sells’ things, apparently these stunts haven’t helped her music sales per Variety magazine. This also explains it if the BI is true:

Only a lover or a gynecologist should ever see this much of your lady area. Certainly not the entire universe. She is vulgar and ultimately screwing herself because her ‘fashion’ antics are overshadowing her music. Which is a shame because she really is talented. It would just be nice if she would put her breasts and crotch away long enough for us to remember that.

  11. glenn November 25, 2013 at 16:36 #

I have to admit, i love the oversized earrings and bracelets.

  12. julyol1972 November 25, 2013 at 15:47 #

If I’m able to tell if your waxer gave you the best Brazilian imaginable, then you’re too naked! You’re too naked Miley!

I get so irritated seeing girls (around my age) dress like this when performing or just out and about on the street. If I was in the spotlight (& a role model, whether you like it or not) I definitely would be dressing with more class, a la Kiernan Shipka.

Ugh. Reminds me of workout outfits from the 80s. Terrible.

  16. TL November 25, 2013 at 14:12 #

    Ugly, tacky and horrible

  17. justme November 25, 2013 at 14:07 #

When you are a popstar with unimpressive vocals, you have to rely HEAVILY on your sex appeal. In Miley’s confused and delusional mind, it seems that being sexy means wearing as little clothes as possible.

    Thus, this outfit.

  18. crystal November 25, 2013 at 12:45 #

I’m getting sick of this, she always in her underwears which is just happening too often now. if she wanna do something new then maybe she should go completely naked next time, and maybe she will actually look good for once consider she does have a nice body lol

  19. Agi November 25, 2013 at 12:37 #

Face palm moment… and I was so hoping it was getting better.

  20. Lei November 25, 2013 at 12:36 #

FC you hit the nail on the head!

She obviously has a team of yes-men telling her this looks good! What a shame 🙁

  21. stella November 25, 2013 at 12:33 #

I’m not asking for a stylist, but a friend: Does Miley have BFF, who can tell her the truth about her look??

    • Carolina Banuelos November 26, 2013 at 00:13 #

OMG haha yes good point she needs a friend.

    • KatieKate November 26, 2013 at 05:01 #

Apparently what she does have is a ”mommager”, who LOVES to see her baby girl paraded around in the sluttiest, tackiest garb she can muster. I know this from watching Rihanna’s (B-quality) fashion challenge show, ‘Styled To Rock’ on Bravo. Miley was the guest celeb one week that the contestants had to design for. Tish, Miley’s mother, and manager, insisted on her looks being ‘more sexy’, even telling one contestant to cut the leather pants off, she had made, into ‘booty shorts’. I was flabbergasted and appaled by the whole ordeal. I feel bad for Miley, ultimately, that she has people-family-in her life, who get paid based on her success, and are obviously willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES. So in response to your comment–No, unfortunatelt, I don’t think she does have a (real) friend to tell her ‘no’.

      • CreoleLady November 26, 2013 at 10:46 #

Thank you for this. Speaks volumes. Ugh, her mother is her stylist? Sad. This may not end well and I’m not just talking about the evolution of Miley’s sartorial style.

  22. Al November 25, 2013 at 12:30 #

    Horrible, horrible, horrible

  23. Lara November 25, 2013 at 12:28 #

I’m subject to correction, but I believe Beyonce is the one who started the “performing in your underwear” trend circa 2008 and “Single Ladies”. Miley looks bad here. I mean, honestly…

    • Sophy November 25, 2013 at 18:44 #

Well she has a lot to answer for then!! Look what she has wrought with pantslessness!!!

      • KatieKate November 26, 2013 at 04:53 #

        Ha ha, yes!

  24. The Dame Intl November 25, 2013 at 12:04 #

Why does she feel the need to dress for perverts? She is making millions of men the world over wank themselves silly. Nobody needs to see this. She doesn’t have an ounce of class in her body. There is a much more powerful way to make an impact.

    • Marybeth November 25, 2013 at 17:16 #

“Why does she feel the need to dress for perverts?”

Yes. The key word here is “perverts.” The vulgar cut, the boyish figure, the little kitty-cats — well, you do the math.

J Lo’s performance underwear, so to speak, may be tacky but at least it’s womanly.

  25. towanda November 25, 2013 at 11:40 #

i’m so tired of seeing swimsuit/ underwear clothes on stage / on the red carpet. For me They’re not sexy at all.

    • KatieKate November 26, 2013 at 04:52 #

Same here. My-very NOT prudish or conservative-husband, upon seeing her getup on the morning news, (the morning news!!!!), said, “Why, for once, can’t she wear pants? I don’t understand what she has against pants! What is her obsession with NOT wearing PANTS???!!!” Yeah, it’s like that.

  26. HM November 25, 2013 at 11:39 #

If you thought Miss Lopez’s performance outfit was tacky…well, THINK AGAIN.

The AMA for Tackiest On-stage Outfit of the Evening goes to….

    it’s bad.

  28. Caro Chanel November 25, 2013 at 11:33 #

Oh, Miley, why? Why? I miss the Hannah Montana in you.

  29. Bettybrandenburg November 25, 2013 at 10:56 #

    Yikes. Looks painful.

  30. kane November 25, 2013 at 10:56 #

I’m so glad not to be an impressionable teenager anymore who might think this is in any way appropriate. Similarly, these women should not be in any visible position in society where they might be confused with ‘role models.’ Sad, pathetic and sad. Same goes for Jennifer Lopez in the post below.

    • KatieKate November 26, 2013 at 04:47 #

      Well said.

  31. Charlotte November 25, 2013 at 10:52 #

    This is so unflaterring.
The cut of the panties is awful, looks like a swimsuit in the 80’s !
