Victoria Beckham Fall 2013 NYFW

On Sunday morning, my first presentation was the Victoria Beckham Fall 2013 show.

Following her exciting foray into separates for Spring 2013, we were all eagerly anticipating which direction she would go next.

We saw British heritage materials, such as tweed, plaid and herringbone, knits (for the first time), more chic separates, and fewer signature fitted dresses, which made room for dresses with slightly looser silhouettes with keyhole or draped detailing.

Updating the ‘Le Smoking’ jacket, Victoria produced a tuxedo with satin lapels and slash sleeves to make it more cape-like; I expect to see VB wearing this several times – both the dress and jacket.

As with each season, you can feel the growth and confidence within Victoria’s designs.

In the past, we’ve seen the likes of Selita Ebanks and Blake Lively wear Victoria’s dresses.

This collection feels like it was made for the likes of Nicole Kidman, Julianna Margulies, Gemma Arterton, Helen Hunt, Tilda Swinton, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Chastain – powerful A-listers who want to look chic and sexy at the same time.

Manolo Blahnik created the kitten-heel booties which I’m sure will also be a huge hit.

Models carried Victoria Beckham’s bags in the same manner we have seen the designer herself carry them.

The best tweet after the Victoria Beckham show came from Hugh Wright, who said “Anyone who still thinks @victoriabeckham isn’t a serious designer, ask Anna Wintour, Suzie Menkes & Jefferson Hack”.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Monique Lhuillier Fall 2013

The Monique Lhuillier Fall 2013 runway show took place on Saturday afternoon despite the snow storms.

Seated behind Brad Goreski, I was trying to figure out which of the pieces he would pick for his clients.

I can see Rashida Jones wearing Look 21, which is a colourful yellow, white and black masculine suit, and my dream is to see Jessica Alba wearing the goddess-green long-sleeved gown with tonal embellishments which was Look 34.

There were plenty more show stoppers which took to the runway, ranging from vibrant, colourful prints, feather prints, bold ombre hues and a few fringe gowns, which moved beautifully as the models glided down the red carpet.

My favourite look was Look 25: the lace long-sleeved floral tulle peplum top with matching pants with a black net overskirt for dramatic effect.

The collection wasn’t all about the gowns; we also saw cigarette pants, chic blouses, swing dresses and cocktail dresses.

Some pieces were accented with the designer’s signature waistband, with all the looks featuring Monique Lhuillier’s sleek geometric cut-out shoes.

Elie Saab’s Spring 2013 collection was a very colourful one.

Models glided down the runway in electric blue, teal, rose pink, shocking pink, beige, chocolate and some exciting prints were thrown into the mix.

A few of the looks, ranging from day dresses to red-carpet gowns, took to the runway with a matching shoulder bag, clutch, or tote which continue to improved from season to season.

There were a few pieces I really loved like the printed dresses and look 29, a strapless cream dress decorated with embellishments which fluttered so beautifully down the runway.

Look 25, a white jumpsuit (as a jumpsuit obsessive) also caught my eye as did look 40, an electric-blue lace tiered gown.   The striped pieces stood out. But as for the rest it all felt really familiar.

Celebrities will no doubt snap up the collection; hopefully the printed look will get a run out.

I read on Twitter that celebs were requesting dress just from viewing Instagram pictures, so we will no doubt see this collection on the red carpet very soon.

Taylor Swift was in the front row, so she might be tempted to return to her embellished-gown-loving ways after seeing this collection.

There is always a buzz of excitement before any Alexander McQueen show, but for Sarah Burton’s Spring 2013 collection this was quite literal, as prior to the presentation the soundtrack was just that: the sound of buzzing bees.

When the first model took to the runway wearing a honeycomb beekeeper hat and a hive-like fabric ensemble…the inspiration became clear.

This truly amazing collection featured signature tailored jackets with cinched-in waists. On this occasion the tortoise belts looked like they were made from honey.

There were many other clever bee, beekeeper, honey and honeycomb references demonstrated on fitted dresses with caged honey-like peplums, a honey corset with bejewelled detailing paired with shorts, honeycomb jacquard suits and the finale gowns which ranged from sweet decorative pieces to dramatic embellished gowns to full-on ballgowns.

Despite the inventiveness and uniqueness of the collection, it was totally wearable so I’m hopefully we will see these pieces on a red carpet very soon.

If you are looking for chic feminine tailoring with oodles of Parisian flare, then look no further than the Giambattista Valli Spring 2013 collection.

Presented on a colour palette of black, red, white and gold, the collection was fresh and refined with both elegant day and evening pieces with everything feeling very light, even the embellished pieces.

For day, the designer presented ankle-cropped pants, vests, LBDs, wrap skirts, cocoon-shaped jackets, short-sleeved jumpsuits, tailored suits and lady-like dresses.

For the red carpet, things got a little more risqué with an array of sheer pieces, which may or may not be lined by the time they hit the red carpet.

I think in most cases celebs could carry off these sheer pieces as presented on the runway, especially the one with the floral appliqués.

There was also a chic white peplum dress, a gorgeous red dress with a tulip skirt, an embellished gold crop top and skirt plus a floral appliqué dress I would like to also see on the red carpet.

Key accessories included metallic pointy pumps, bracelets and clutches with a GBV logo.

Bold and graphic was the key to Olivier Rousteing’s Spring 2013 collection for Balmain.

The highly bedazzled pieces the house is known for were replaced somewhat by bright harlequin patterns plus heavy crocheted and embroidered pieces.

Oliver was inspired by Cuba and its ‘Latin sensuality’, but I have a feeling he was also inspired by Dynasty’s Krystle Carrington and Alexis Colby-Carrington judging by the shoulder pads which were bold, supersized and wide.

Linebacker wide, which will look great in editorials, on the models who wear Balmain religiously off-duty and the editors who borrow the pieces from their office closet.

Anna Dello Russo will of course rock the hell out of this collection, but will celebs be snapping up these bold shouldered pieces for the red carpet?

Time will tell. Whoever she is, she will be a type who likes to take risks.

Crop-tops, leather pants, matador style-jackets, mini-dresses, fitted pants, leather jackets, and a selection of denim pieces took to the runway.

Key accessories included oversized belts, perforated open-toe booties, patent pumps and harlequin cut-out ankle boots.

Favourites: Tuxedo jacket with leather pants and white halter crop top and leather pants
