Anti-establishment style was everywhere last night at the punk-themed 2013 Met Gala, where the ‘it’ list worked varying levels of sartorial subversion – from glam-rock to goth and grunge.
But there was also a select group of red-carpet rebels who armed themselves with one of the evening’s more unusual, nonconformist trends.
Their weapons of choice? Not spikes or studs, or even chainmail. Rather, they suited up in full-on punk protection mode with what can only be dubbed as glove-sleeves – full arm, hand and finger-covering extensions. (Practical, they are not.)
We saw these gown appendages in their most blatant form on a Givenchy-clad Kim Kardashian, who not only covered her baby bump in all-over floral, but also completely sleeved up in the moody, foreboding print.
The built-in glove extensions also appeared on Leelee Sobieski, who wore Christian Dior Couture and looked to be growing a gold-plated garden on her forearms and fingers.
It was Paloma Faith in a Michael Cinco design who gave us the best lesson in how to wear gown-gloves with her blood-red, ombre-effect masterpiece.
Is the trend worthy of a high-five, or is it outrageously out of hand?

Here is a roundup of the models who took to the red carpet at the 2013 Met Gala on Monday night.
Cara Delevingne: Wearing Burberry, the British model nailed the theme, working a studded navy column dress with a plunging neckline. Her part-braided ‘do and studded clutch perfected her look. She was easily one of the best on the night.
Gisele Bundchen: The model wore an Anthony Vaccarello Fall 2013 black mini dress with revealing grommet detailing. You slammed Gwyneth for wearing a gown with sheer sides; does Gisele get a pass?
Karlie Kloss: I never thought I would say this about Karlie: she looks frumpy. Ever since she chopped off her locks she has lost her mojo. This Louis Vuitton granny-chic look ages her about 40 years. Betty White would look better in this frock.

To celebrate the new ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday, some of the biggest celebs walked down the red carpet. In honour of the exhibit, many of the men chose to give their formal looks a bit of punk inspiration, which made for an exciting menswear event.
Eddie Redmayne: The red carpet phenom added another beautiful look to his collection, wearing a Dior Homme navy-blue wool tuxedo with black grosgrain peak lapels. As always, it fit just right. To finish it off, Eddie added a white cotton shirt, a black satin bow tie, a white pocket square, and black patent-leather derbies.
Frank Ocean: In a Givenchy black tuxedo, Frank looked incredibly dapper for the event. His two-button notch-lapel tux fit well and he paired it classically with a white shirt and black bow tie. To give the outfit a little kick of punk, Frank opted for shoes with silver studs going around the soles – a very cool addition.
Joshua Jackson: I’ve never been OK with wearing a red tie to a red carpet event. It’s cheesy. I don’t like that aspect of his outfit, but I love the beige linen lapels on his Dior Homme black suit. Even though it’s a small detail on his jacket, it made for a stylish look. Joshua topped it off with a white cotton shirt and a Chanel ‘J12 Black Matte Ceramic’ watch.
