Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Marc Jacobs and milliner Stephen Jones brought Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter to life with an oversized floppy hat worn by the models during his Fall 2012 fairytale-themed runway show on Monday evening.

It wasn’t just the hats that were oversized; coats, jackets, skirts and scarves, held together with large safety pins, all got the same ‘bigger is better’ treatment.

These pieces would make for very cosy winter attire.

It’s no wonder that everything was so oversized because there was a lot of layering. One look had a shrug over a jacket, over a dress with cropped pants.

The colour palette ranged from moody hues of black, forest green, violet and navy, to bubbly pastel pinks.

Textures were rich and patterns ranged from jacquard and brocade to paisley and floral.

Key accessories included chunky shoes with big embellished buckles paired with shimmering socks and oversized top handle bags in ostrich or lacquered leather.

Which pieces will we see on the red carpet?

Well, if you strip down the layering there were many cute embellished and shimmering dresses that I’m sure we will see on front-row attendee Dakota Fanning, or we will see commercial versions of these looks on the red carpet.

Helena Bonham Carter is probably the only person who could pull off all of these looks as presented – hats included.

Look 40, the hologram sequined dress with the rosette details around the neckline, is the most red carpet ready look of this collection.

Who wants to place a bet that Anna Dello Russo will wear one of these hats before fashion week (month) ends in March?

Reem Acra‘s Fall 2012 collection was inspired by feminine power.

Cue second-skin leather dresses, beaded mini dresses and sexy gowns with illusion panels which made the looks appear to have extreme cut-outs.

We also saw beaded boleros, metallic tweed jackets, pencil skirts, knee-length dresses that clung to the body, plus office-appropriate day-time sheath dresses.

Donna Karan’s Fall 2012 collection was inspired by Hollywood’s most androgynous icon, Marlene Deitrich.

On a colour palette of grey, red, midnight blue and black the designer served up seductive menswear for the sophisticated and spiritied woman.

The collection started with oversized pinstriped double-breasted coats, impeccably tailored skirts and pant suits, plus smart jackets with asymmetrical black satin panels to replicate cummerbunds.

Feminine pieces like body suits were given masculine touches as they were paired with tapered pants while the dresses had stiff cuffs.

The presentation didn’t solely focus on menswear. Donna Karan eased in some form-fitting dresses and evening gowns.

All the looks were teamed with an array of Stephen Jones hats perched to the side which varied in size, style and colour.

The presentation ended with Whitney Houston’s version of ‘I’m Every Woman’ playing in the background which had everyone singing along.

By everyone, you know I’m excluding Anna Wintour, right?

Preen Fall 2012

Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi took inspiration from Victorian-era scrapbooks and abstract expressionists for Preen’s Fall 2012 collection.

We saw clean, fresh looks with chic silhouettes awash with bold colours and botanical prints which were presented as collages.

You instantly got a downtown IT girl vibe from this collection, which was presented with platform ankle boots designed by Aldo for the second season in a row.

Tapered pants, 40s-inspired dresses, fur-accented coats, chic separates including pencil skirts, jackets, turtlenecks, peplum tops, tulip-shaped skirts and fine lace tops made up this cohesive collection with an underlying sporty feel.

Carolina Herrera’s Fall 2012 presentation gave aspiring designers a master class on showcasing quintessential elegance.

She catered to the uptown lady who not only lunches but also attends the opera or other high-profile events, as she presented ladylike sheaths, chic separates, and of course red-carpet-worthy gowns on a colour palette of deep navy, mauve, black, light blue and red.

For daytime, Herrera served up peplum jackets, tapered pants, sheath dresses, wrap coats, knee-length wool skirts, cropped jackets and sweaters in luxe tweeds, fine wools and chic satins, some accented with fur and feather trims.

The selection of gowns was truly spectacular, but the finale architectural ball gown is top of my wish list for the Oscars.

No doubt Renee will have first dibs.

Key accessories included Manolo Blahnik shoes and obi-wrap belts which accented many of the looks.
