I immediately thought of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s striped entrance at the Chanel Pre-Oscar Dinner when I saw Fan Bingbing showing her own stripes at the 2013 Vanity Fair Party, hosted Sunday night at the Sunset Tower in California.
For the after-party circuit, the Asian actress swapped her Marchesa magenta ball gown, worn on the Oscars red carpet, for monochrome. But she wasn’t afraid to still go big with this voluminous dress from Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2013 collection.
On the model, I liked this linear moment, especially since stripes (even those of the zebra variety) are so on trend right now.
On Fan, it was missing the wow factor I wanted. Without the runway’s bold statement necklace, this look came off as a bit one-dimensional.
A bold lip colour or a less structured hairstyle could have helped the situation.

I agree, on Fan my eyes are automatically drawn to the skirt. On the model the statement necklace draws the eyes upwards towards the face and the look flows beautifully. Without the necklace there’s a disconnect that just does not work.
Agree. The necklace balanced out the visual of the voluminous skirt. It’s become bland and no longer symmetrical without it.
I agree as well, it needs a necklace.
Again, a bit dramatic but I am not feeling this either.
She should have worn the statement necklace but I love how dramatic and OTT (in a good way!) she went for this event and the main event! Yay for drama!
I liked the necklace with the dress as it gives a more formal vibe but I think she still looks really good.

Am I blind or what?
I agree that it does feel one dimentional. But I actually think it already did on the runway. The dress itself just isn’t glam enough, the structure says Governors ball but the stripes give it a laidback vibe.
She looks like geisha or drag queen! For sure, not in a good way! She tried so hard each time on the red carpet to get the attention! It lost the meaningful when everyone can feel her desperate for attention! She is not like Ziyi Zhang who has the wow factor on red carpet!
The runway version looks better with the necklace. Still, I am not a fan of stripes. From other close up photo, her earrings don’t go well with this look.
I agree.
she also wore elie saab to the elton john party, you should post that fc!
I´m quite disappointed by her recent dress choices and I hope she will wow us again soon!!!
Yes, the necklace would’ve been perfect. I liked these 2 looks from Fan, but FC did you see the Elie Saab somon/peach fabulous dress she wore at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Oscar Viewing Party? That was amazing, she should’ve worn that at the Oscars.
No matter what she wears her face looks creepy after all the plastic surgeries. Btw who is Fan Bingbing anyway?
I am so over her and her frequent appearances in OTT gowns. Some work, some don’t, give it a rest. This one, like the rumpled bodiced deep pink number earlier, falls in the “don’t” category for me (although I did like the pink color).
I couldn’t agree with you more. I think she is sooo overrated.
I’m usually a fan of Fan’s (teehee) style but she was disappointing in both Oscar dresses IMO.
I also miss the necklace, it certainly balanced a very overpowering gown, without it all you see is the dress somehow.
Ok! she did it!
!
in one day she ruined 2 dresses for me…
sad
She is odd plastic doll no matter what she wears.
why is she here?>
The gown is crying for necklace!!
Fan Bingbing is always entertaining to see, but I think she went too minimalist this time. She really needed a statement necklace or a pop of color.
