Elle Fanning Channels 1940s Elegance in Custom Gucci

When it comes to press tours, Instagram has become just as important as the red carpet, and Elle Fanning’s fourth look for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping was unveiled on the social media platform this weekend.

Elle Fanning poses in a forest-green Gucci skirt suit with a matching oversized hat, Cartier butterfly brooch and black pointed-toe heels.

The actress wore a custom Gucci suit designed by Demna, channelling the elegance of 1940s tailoring, once again, with a silhouette that could have come straight from a vintage fashion photograph.

From the exaggerated shoulders and nipped-in waist to the long pencil skirt, there is a distinctly old-world glamour to this look. But what I love most is how Elle has embraced the character of the clothes, giving the ensemble a sense of occasion despite this being a social media photoshoot.

There is also something wonderfully aristocratic about the styling, which brings us back to Effie Trinket. While this isn’t as flamboyant as the wardrobe we associate with the character, the elaborate headwear and immaculate tailoring certainly suggest a woman who takes dressing seriously.

Butterflies have become a recurring motif in Elle’s press tour wardrobe, just as ladybirds have featured in Mckenna Grace’s looks. Here, an archival Cartier butterfly brooch and rings add colour and sparkle to the otherwise monochromatic ensemble, while connecting the look to The Hunger Games universe.

And then there is the hat. Elle has developed quite the fascination with hats and fascinators during this press tour, and this sculptural design might be my favourite so far. Even the Gucci hair comb securing her elegant updo deserves a mention.

The black pointed-toe Gucci pumps complete another excellent addition to Elle’s increasingly impressive press tour wardrobe.
