Get The Look: Mandy Moore’s SAG Awards 1970’s Inspired Voluminous Curls

A departure from her usual ultra-chic and elegant style, Mandy Moore opted for more playful and super glamorous ‘70’s-inspired look for this year’s SAG Awards. From her custom cobalt Ralph Lauren dress to her warm, subtly smoky makeup, Mandy’s full look was certainly inspired by the beauties of the disco era. Above all, it was her airy, texturized curled hairstyle that brought this modern ‘70’s-like style to life.

Created by the super talented Celebrity Hairstylist Ashley Streicher, Mandy’s side parted waves were all about volume and rich texture which beautifully complemented her dazzling sequin dress. Using a vintage approach with a masterful blend of texturizers, the result was a cool hair style that borrowed from the classic hair looks of the popular dance era. Here’s how Ashley created this fun look without looking dated:

PREP: Start with freshly clean hair and let air dry. To create a foundation of that great texture seen in Mandy’s hair, Ashley re-dampened the hair by layering a blend of both Christophe Robin Instant Volumizing Mist with Rosewater and Reverie Surf Spray. The volumizing properties in both products mixed with the salty agents in the Reverie spray enhanced Mandy’s natural hair while adding shine and a tousled texture.

STYLE: Once prepped, Ashley sectioned the hair for heat styling. Beginning with the top front section, she used the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer and evenly blew out each segment with a Harry Josh Pro Tools Round Brush. While still warm, Ashley prepped each section with Garnier Full Control Hairspray before wrapping each section around 1 ¼ inch Velcro rollers. After the complete set of rollers were put in, Ashley sprayed the hair in a layer of Garnier Flexible Hold Hairspray and let them cool for 20 minutes.

Thereafter, each roller was neatly undone, and the hair was flipped over to shake out the freshly rolled curls. She then when back to each section and brushed each with a flat boar bristle brush, gently back-combing as she brushed. Not only did this add an extra layer of thickness and hold to each curl but soften the texture as well. Before moving on to the next section, she sprayed in some Garnier Flexible Hold Hairspray.

FINISH: Once done, Ashley parted Mandy’s hair on the side and neatly brushed the side, gathering it behind the ear and securing it in place with a thin bobby pin. For a ‘70’s textured look, she back brushed the pinned hair without completely disrupting the shape of the curls. Finally, Ashley sprayed the completed look with Rene Furterer Texture Vegetal Spray for a touchable hold that lasted through the festive evening without losing its shape or volume.
