Maiyet Spring 2012

On Sunday I discovered a new brand: Maiyet.

The debut Spring 2012 presentation was attended by all the top editors from Vogue, The Times, Marie Claire and Elle, so I was excited that I was going to be seeing something very special.

Maiyet marries old-world traditions with new-world luxury to create a collection that is sophisticated, modern and minimalist in spirit.

The luxury line sources artisans from developing countries in order to promote self-sufficiency.

We saw an urban collection of khaki trench coats with embellished details, high-waisted shorts, sari-style cropped blouses, silk maxi dresses, short sets, chic blazers paired with a flounced skirt, maxi skirts and loose-fitting pants.

Key accessories included double wrap belts, hand-sculpted jewellery, wristlet clutches, shoulder bags, totes, and strappy sandals, wedges and flats which were paired with socks.

Favourites: handloom jamdani cuff shorts and top and hand embroidered linen dress

Sophia Kokosalaki Spring 2012

I’m very excited at the return of Greek designer Sophia Kokosalaki, who last showed during the Fall 2010 season.

She returns for Spring 2012 with a beautiful collection on a breezy, fresh white, lemon and ocean blue colour palette with grey, black and sea green.

I love the Grecian influences and that her signature draped pieces continue to feature in her collections.

Stripped asymmetrical hemlines and caged details provided the focus of this collection.

The collection showcased many mini dresses, batwing tops, fitted pants, strapless dresses, tea-length dresses and a gorgeous poufy white tulle gown.

I also saw some sportswear influences. One look had a top that appeared to have a hooded detail, but it was actually just the clever construction of the piece.

I was lucky enough to see a few special pieces that didn’t appear on Style.com, like the lemon draped dress above which I hope to see on someone like Kate Bosworth or Keira Knightley.

Andrew Gn Spring 2012

Andrew Gn’s Spring 2012 collection was inspired by his Japanese grandmother’s kimonos, plus he envisioned a meeting between Madame de Pompadour and Madame butterfly.

This resulted in very elegant mini dresses and coat dresses with kimono sleeves and origami details.

We also saw coat dresses, tweed coats and belted trench coats.

I loved the rich brocade pieces which looked that much more luxurious with jewelled appliqués.

The collection started off with mostly angelic white looks, before moving on to black, gold and light lilac looks.

For the final part of the collection we saw a burst of colour which really allowed the jewel details to pop.

From look 36 I was in heaven. Eveningwear started off with a gorgeous metallic bustier gown with rococo embroidery which I can picture on someone with a regal air like Keira Knightley.

Electric blue, red, lemon, rose and a selection of white gowns, which could make worthy wedding gowns, took my breath away.

This collection provided a beautiful mix of youthful mini dresses with red-carpet-worthy gowns. The gorgeous colours were a perfect ‘pick me up’ on a sunny Sunday morning.

Key accessories included Andrew Gn’s signature jewel cuffs, embellished leaf headpieces and multi-colour platform strappy sandals.

Favourites: Neon yellow dress with origami sleeves and blue long sleeve gown

Andrew Gn was kind enough to give me a look from his Fall 2011 collection which I wore to his show. The ivory loose-fitted shirt was just what I needed on a very hot day in Paris. I’ve realized the key to wearing leather pants in hot weather is to wear a size up.

Dw by Kanye West Spring 2012

The biggest buzz of Paris Fashion Week was Kanye West’s first womenswear collection which is titled ‘Dw by Kanye West’. The Dw is supposed to stand for his mother’s name, Donde West.

The designer had personally selected a group of 100 people which included journalists, buyer and bloggers, so I was honoured to be invited.

Everyone was speculating about who was going to be in the front row. Rumours included Beyonce, Jay Z and even Natalie Portman.

All the top models walked in the show, with Chanel Iman flying in especially.

So what about the clothes?

Despite critics not being that impressed, I actually quite liked them.

I did think some of the pieces were a tad heavy for spring, especially the furs and the crocodile skins, but the light colour palette of mostly white, ivory and blush made up for that.

We saw sexy bandage dresses, made much sexier by cut outs or open zippers, plunging necklines, futuristic cuts, leather pants, fur trim jackets, hooded coats and slouchy pants.

Will Kanye be winning any design awards? Judging by the critics, no.

Will front row attendees Ciara and Lindsay Lohan wear this collection on the red carpet?

Most definitely. It wouldn’t surprise me if Ciara was Kanye’s muse, as I can see her wearing several pieces.

Key accessories included four unique Giuseppe Zanotti heels created especially for the show, a gold ‘Yeezy’ nameplate necklace and a fur backpack.

Loewe Spring 2012

Before the Loewe Spring 2012 presentation I was invited backstage for a sneak peek and to meet the designer behind the Spanish brand, Stuart Vevers.

Stuart believes being British works to his advantage as he is constantly finding inspiration from his new base in Madrid.

For Spring 2012 he was inspired by Spanish architecture to create the tiled prints. He wanted the prints to feel luxurious, so each garment has a different print, despite this being an expensive process.

Stuart showed me the leather pieces which are very light and soft while the jackets are reversible with suede on the inside.

Other leather pieces have cut-out details, prints, perforations or added chiffon details in order to keep them fresh and interesting.

Stuart showcased gorgeous feminine silhouettes on a colour palette of terracotta, sea blue, ash grey, navy and gold.

Ladylike fitted suede dresses, sophisticated pencil skirts, jackets, coats and blouses made up this very elegant collection.

Key accessories included platform shoes and, of course, gorgeous bags. We saw perforated shoulder bags, luxurious leather totes and wristlet clutches.

Models wore their hair sleek straight behind their ears with smoky eyes and a dark red lip colour.

Sonia Rykiel Spring 2012

We followed the super long yellow chalked runway to find the Sonia Rykiel Spring 2012 presentation on Saturday afternoon.

The brand is known for its fun, energetic presentations, but the mood was more relaxed as the models took to the runway in their 20s, sportswear-inspired looks.

Gorgeous peach, orange, ivory and yellow pieces were presented alongside vivid floral prints and knit stripes.

Pleats, thigh-high splits and cut-out details injected a lot of fun into this collection of feminine dresses, masculine pants, oversized blouses, pant suits, rompers and jumpsuits.

The models’ bouncy soft curls were teamed with nude lip colour for a simple yet beautiful finishing touch to this typically chic Parisian collection.

Key accessories included a selection of fold-over bags, chic box clutches, bags with built-in arm rests plus lace-up heels and flats.
