Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Zac Posen managed to coax many supermodels out of retirement for his Spring 2013 show.

Considering how stunning this collection was, I’m not surprised they wanted to be a part of this show, which was opened by the most iconic catwalker of them all, Naomi Campbell.

The fashion crowd tried to play it cool, but we were all very excited at this supermodel sighting. She kick-started proceedings wearing a hibiscus-print chiffon day dress with Manolo Blahnik shoes and David Webb jewels.

40s glamour served as the inspiration for this divine red-carpet-ready collection, but it wasn’t all about the gowns.

I do love a good suit, so I was delighted to see a lemon suit with pleated lapels, impeccably tailored skirt suits and a jumpsuit paired with a blazer.

Pin-tucked blouses paired with a pencil skirt or wide-legged pants, and printed, corseted, draped, tulle day dresses served as the appetizers for the main event: the gowns.

From look 22 I was in heaven, as every type of gown imaginable, from a slim silhouette to ballgowns with frothy tulle skirts, was presented.

The biggest gasp of the night was, of course, provided by Coco Rocha.

No Zac Posen show is complete without the supermodel closing it, and she did so in style wearing a white jacquard organza tiered ballgown.

Models tend not to smile on the runway, but even Coco couldn’t stop beaming in this stunning gown which fulfils every girl’s princess fantasy.

Front Row: Leigh Lezark,Alina Cho, Laura Remington Platt, Martha Stewart and Alexa Chung

Favourites: White strapless ballgown and cream tulle cocktail dress

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Penelope Cruz, Christine Baranski, Dita von Teese, Jessica Chastain, Demi Moore, Susan Sarandon, Kristen Wiig, Eva Amurri, Kyra Sedgwick, Amber Heard, Kerry Washington, Diane Kruger, Zoe Saldana, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Kate Beckinsale, Abbie Cornish, Elizabeth Banks, Iman, Minka Kelly, Camilla Belle, Charlize Theron, Marion Cotillard and Marcia Cross

The one thing you can be sure of from a Victoria Beckham collection is clean lines, modern silhouettes, and of course her signature fitted dresses.

For Spring 2013 those signature dress were uber sexy with lighter fabrics, sheer yokes, lace inserts, dramatic cuts and bralets giving the dresses a lingerie-inspired feel.

Those of you saying her collections tend to be one-note will be delighted to see that VB introduced a mix of separates this season. Tailored blazers, A-line skirts, button-down blouses, cigarette pants, and miniskirts showed how the VB brand continues to evolve and grow. Plus it also proved that the designer listens to her customers and doesn’t just design for herself.

On a colour palette of black, white, nude and pops of bright orange, we also saw maxi dresses and sporty mini dresses with skater skirts and pleated hemlines, one of which Victoria wore when she took her bow.

This season we didn’t see as many bags, as VB showcased a selection of clutches with two chain-accented shoulder bags with studded details closing the show.

After working with many shoe designers in the past, VB teamed up with Manolo Blahnik on this occasion. They created sexy open-toe booties, some two-tone, flat lace-up sandals and two-tone brogues.

Although we didn’t see any red carpet gowns on this occasion, I’m sure there will be some off-runway pieces which will make it to the red carpet as well as many pieces from the runway.

When seated at the Monique Lhuillier Spring 2013 show, I was delighted to see so many celebrity stylists in the front row, because when it comes to red-carpet dresses and gowns, Monique Lhuillier is their go-to woman.

Inspired by water and the life of the sea, this season Monique introduced modern digital prints to her pieces for a refreshing twist, with peplum details also adding to the edgier flare.

Before we got to the gowns, we saw ladylike sheath dresses, bodycon dresses, kimono-sleeve blouses, fitted pants, peplum tops, and fit-and-flare dresses.

And then the gowns… oooh the gowns… draped, strapless, one-shoulder, embellished, lace, tulle, chiffon, printed and long sleeved; there was a gown for every red carpet or evening occasion.

The last 10 gowns had me craning my neck to get a closer look, especially the show-stopping gold coral-embroidered sculpted gown which closed the show.

Models sported lacquered, loose hair with the MAC team using Monique’s aquatic inspiration to give the models bold-blue or teal eyeshadow.

Since Monique has mastered gowns, she debuted her shoe collection during this presentation.

Tibi Spring 2013

Tibi’s Spring 2013 collection was very refreshing as Amy Smilovic served up easy-street-chic, uber-feminine, everyday pieces we will no doubt see on celebrity fans such as Olivia Palermo and Lauren Conrad.

The collection mixed menswear-inspired loose, low-slung tuxedo pants, light-coloured denim jeans, boxy tops and two-tone pants with playful feminine shirt dresses, crop tops, pleated skirts, drop-waist dresses, short skirts and fit-and-flare dresses.

The majority of the collection was classic black and white with delicate pops of lemon, cream and pink with punchy abstract prints which are the designer’s signature.

Leather waist-cinching belts, leather miniskirts and peplum tops, and sheer crochet pieces gave this collection a contemporary edge and a sporty flair.

The clothes were beautiful, but the shoes were divine. We saw a selection of strappy sandals. I love the part-leather, part-PVC shoes and the two-tone sandals.

Inspired by Indian architect Anish Kapoor and the traditional kurtas his mother and sister wore at home in Nepal, Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2013 collection started off with masculine separates including tailcoat blazers, chiffon tunics and cropped low-slung pants with a loose silhouette.

We saw a bit of the designer’s dark side with a selection of edgier street mixed in with the frothy dresses and gowns which will most definitely hit the red carpet very soon.

Dresses and blouses with chiffon veils, feather-accented dresses, ruffled blouses, shorts, tunic dresses, blouses with draped backs and drop-waist dresses were presented on a colour palette that presented a contrast between classic black and white with pops of blue, maroon and red with the Kapoor-influenced spine print also playing its part.

Paul Hanlon at Schwarzkopf gave the models iron-straight locks with a center parting while Charlotte Tilbury for M.A.C. gave the models a barely there look with pale faces. I wonder how many celebs will work this pale-face look.

This season Prabal worked with Casadei who provided sexy strappy sandals and pumps.

The designer continued his collaboration with Linda Farrow, who provided the chic sunglasses.

Front Row: Hailee Steinfeld, Kate Bosworth and Allison Williams.

Favourites: Printed blouse and pants and blue jacquard jacket with matching shorts

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Seyfried, Emma Stone, Charlize Theron, Zoe Saldana, Diane Kruger, Christian Ricci, Lizzy Chaplan and Kristen Stewart

Suno Spring 2013

Suno’s Spring 2013 collection was an interesting mix of ultra girlie pieces with some boxy boyish looks thrown into the mix. It’s no wonder that fashion chameleon Solange Knowles was perched in the front row.

With the models sporting a twisted 40s updo, the designers stayed true to their love of prints….also loved by Solange Knowles.

We saw plenty of florals, stripes and even a mobile phone print on dresses, blouses, tunics, windbreakers, drawstring Bermuda shorts, pleated skirts, boxy shirt dresses, button down blouses, A-line dresses and jackets.

For the red carpet, I can see the final look – a peplum maxi dress and a cinched-waist crop top with tea-length skirt – making an appearance.

Nicholas Kirkwood provided the footwear and M.A.C. gave the models a dewy glow with neutral tones and blush lips.

Front Row: Solange Knowles

Favourites: Floral print dress with cut-out detail and peplum maxi dress

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Solange Knowles, Eva Mendes, Rachel Bilson, Zoe Saldana, Carey Mulligan, Hailee Steinfeld, Chloe Moretz, Kerry Washington, Rachel McAdams and Jaime King
