Red Carpet Fashion Awards

There is always a buzz of excitement before any Alexander McQueen show, but for Sarah Burton’s Spring 2013 collection this was quite literal, as prior to the presentation the soundtrack was just that: the sound of buzzing bees.

When the first model took to the runway wearing a honeycomb beekeeper hat and a hive-like fabric ensemble…the inspiration became clear.

This truly amazing collection featured signature tailored jackets with cinched-in waists. On this occasion the tortoise belts looked like they were made from honey.

There were many other clever bee, beekeeper, honey and honeycomb references demonstrated on fitted dresses with caged honey-like peplums, a honey corset with bejewelled detailing paired with shorts, honeycomb jacquard suits and the finale gowns which ranged from sweet decorative pieces to dramatic embellished gowns to full-on ballgowns.

Despite the inventiveness and uniqueness of the collection, it was totally wearable so I’m hopefully we will see these pieces on a red carpet very soon.

If you are looking for chic feminine tailoring with oodles of Parisian flare, then look no further than the Giambattista Valli Spring 2013 collection.

Presented on a colour palette of black, red, white and gold, the collection was fresh and refined with both elegant day and evening pieces with everything feeling very light, even the embellished pieces.

For day, the designer presented ankle-cropped pants, vests, LBDs, wrap skirts, cocoon-shaped jackets, short-sleeved jumpsuits, tailored suits and lady-like dresses.

For the red carpet, things got a little more risqué with an array of sheer pieces, which may or may not be lined by the time they hit the red carpet.

I think in most cases celebs could carry off these sheer pieces as presented on the runway, especially the one with the floral appliqués.

There was also a chic white peplum dress, a gorgeous red dress with a tulip skirt, an embellished gold crop top and skirt plus a floral appliqué dress I would like to also see on the red carpet.

Key accessories included metallic pointy pumps, bracelets and clutches with a GBV logo.

Bold and graphic was the key to Olivier Rousteing’s Spring 2013 collection for Balmain.

The highly bedazzled pieces the house is known for were replaced somewhat by bright harlequin patterns plus heavy crocheted and embroidered pieces.

Oliver was inspired by Cuba and its ‘Latin sensuality’, but I have a feeling he was also inspired by Dynasty’s Krystle Carrington and Alexis Colby-Carrington judging by the shoulder pads which were bold, supersized and wide.

Linebacker wide, which will look great in editorials, on the models who wear Balmain religiously off-duty and the editors who borrow the pieces from their office closet.

Anna Dello Russo will of course rock the hell out of this collection, but will celebs be snapping up these bold shouldered pieces for the red carpet?

Time will tell. Whoever she is, she will be a type who likes to take risks.

Crop-tops, leather pants, matador style-jackets, mini-dresses, fitted pants, leather jackets, and a selection of denim pieces took to the runway.

Key accessories included oversized belts, perforated open-toe booties, patent pumps and harlequin cut-out ankle boots.

When we think of Guillaume Henry‘s Carven, we think of cute, whimsical dresses and his signature Peter Pan collars, but for Spring 2013 he gave us those things and so much more.

That’s because the Carven girl has grown up. She now wears chic suits, tailored blazers and longer skirts.

Heart-shaped motifs were either laser cut into sharp blazers or embroidered into dresses, to ensure that the newly grown up Carven girl still has a playful edge.

On a Fall-like colour palette of black, navy, grey and maroon, the collection brightened up midway through with a selection of prints before moving on to shades of nude and beige.

Dresses had cool cut-outs, fit-and-flare silhouettes, tea-lengths and long-sleeved shifts.

I particularly loved the laser-cut leather pieces for an edgier flare and the midriff baring A-line dresses.

Key accessories included chunky ankle strap platforms, platform loafers and leather clutch.

Front Row: Anna Wintour, Dree Hemingway and Anna Dello Russo

Favourites: Printed strapless dress and embroidered blue dress with cut-out detail

Roberto Cavalli may have toned down the animal prints for Spring 2013, but he didn’t tone down the sex appeal of this collection.

Blonde models were given the white or pastel shades, whilst the dark-haired models stormed the runway wearing black, edgier pieces.

The presentation kick-started with white fine embroidered or sharp laser-cut pieces which I can see on Kate Moss.

Cavalli presented a lust-worthy collection of sharp blazers, camisole tops, blouses, shredded leather pants, handkerchief dresses, tunic dresses, skirts which two slits and sheer trousers.

For those who wanted something more flamboyant, Cavalli mixed in his signature scarf prints on lighter-than-air chiffon dresses and blouses.

Celebs will be clamouring for the gowns which featured backless embellishments, cut-out, thigh-high slits and plunging necklines (not necessarily all in the one gown) which have BDOTW potential.

Models sported just-got-out-of-bed tousled hair and dark, smoky eyes.

Key accessories included gold-chain-accented shoulder bags and a selection of sexy sandals.

Front Row: Elizabeth Hurley with her partner Shane Warne, Leona Lewis, Valeria Mazza, Teresa Baca, Nieves Alvarez, Eugenia Silva and Nadege

Favourites: Nude laser-cut gown and lace-accented camisole-printed top with silk peach-coloured wide-legged pants

Who I Can See Wearing This Collection: Naomi Campbell, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Kate Moss, Nieves Alvarez and Kylie Minogue
