Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Rita Ora was crowned Best Newcomer for 2012.

Considering the majority of the comments on her posts hadn’t been very complementary, with most accusing Rita of copying Rihanna’s style, I must say this comes as a huge shock.

The British singer, who is not afraid to take fashion risks and known for her blonde tresses and signature red lippie à la Gwen Stefani, has supported mostly British designers like Julien MacDonald, Stella McCartney, McQ by Alexander McQueen, House of Holland and Vivienne Westwood.

Other designer favourites include Marchesa, Mugler and Stephane Rolland for her dramatic music awards looks; plus, Emilio Pucci and Alexandre Vauthier have provided her with something uber hot for when she wants to take the sexy route.

While I continue to be shocked by this result, I am happy that she ditched the sneakers which she wore with most dresses earlier on in the year. It was so Lily Allen circa 2006.

Sporting a slick back dirty-blonde do, Rita Ora took to the red carpet for the Jingle Bell Ball hosted by Capital FM at the O2 Arena in London on Sunday evening.

The singer wore a Calvin Klein Resort 2013 that doesn’t appear to fit her style at all.

Had this citron dress featuring a split neck and bandeau been worn by Clare Danes, Jennifer Aniston (in black, obviously) or Zoe Saldana this would’ve worked, but on Rita, I don’t get it.

Factor in the new hairstyle, makeup too heavy for this summery hue dress and those hideous PVC booties and we possibly have Rita’s worst look to date.

Rita Ora appears in the January 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK, of which Sienna Miller graces the cover.

The British singer, who is no doubt one of the breakout musicians of 2012, smoulders in her photoshoot wearing a Stella McCartney jumpsuit and Maison Martin Margiela jewels styled with her Alexander McQueen black-and-white tuxedo, channelling her inner tomboy.

In her interview, she addresses fame, her exaggerated style, and her debut album ‘ORA’, and she explains what it’s like to perform in front of 50,000 with Chris Martin.

See the full photoshoot and interview in the ‘Body Issue’ of Harper’s Bazaar, which is out now.

Here are some extracts from her interview:

On the music she listened to growing up: “Growing up I loved Beyoncé and Gwen Stefani because they were honest girls, but people always need a new role model relevant to them. I find it exciting that girls have really connected with me and my music and that I have the power to change someone’s life in three minutes, to wake them up.”

On performing with Chris Martin: “Performing in front of 50,000 people was such a great confidence-booster. Me and Chris Martin are similar onstage – we don’t do the same thing twice. It made me feel like I could take over the world.”

On her boy-girl style: “I love flamboyancy and glamour and elegance. I love that over-exaggerated style. I’m a boy girl. I love my trainers and mixing comfort with sleek, clean lines.”

On collaborating with her favourite British band, Mumford & Sons: “I would love to do a collaboration with them. Coming from the UK feels like the coolest thing in the world right now.”

Rita Ora’s second look sadly wasn’t captured properly at the 2012 British Fashion Awards – she wore a gorgeous white McQ Alexander McQueen Fall 2012 tulle floral tea-length dress while performing.

Her third look, by Stella McCartney, was captured in the press room.

She styled her white sweater and wide-legged pants with a silver hologram clutch and matching wedges from the Resort 2013 collection.

Keeping the necklace from her red carpet look, on this occasion she was back to her signature red lippie.

She told me that the key element to her look is fun – whether it’s a sexy Roberto Cavalli suit, or a quirky House of Holland dress, she wants to project that she’s having fun with fashion.

In the press room Stella McCartney joked, “I love what you are wearing…who designed it?”

Fashion-wise it was a great night for Rita Ora.

Rita Ora, who Adidas has unveiled as the latest celeb to star in their 2012 Holiday Campaign, took to the red carpet last night at the 2012 British Fashion Awards held at the Savoy Hotel in London.

Her first look was a Vivienne Westwood gown.

This has to be one of Rita’s best looks to date.

Sexy, stylish, classic. I adore the fit, the light-blue colour and the detailing around the bodice.

A dazzling diamond necklace and nude lips – yes, nude – provided the finishing touches.

I’m so glad she didn’t opt for her signature red lip colour for this look; the nude was perfect for this soft, serene look.

District MTV invited me to the 2012 MTV EMAs, so I invited them to pick their best dressed from the event.

They selected the lady red, Rita Ora.

“Rita Ora sporting three red outfits at the 2012 MTV EMAs was a smashing effort – one for the red carpet, one for stage and a third for the glamour pit, where I saw her chatting to Kanye West. And those locks – she’s like a modern Marilyn. On stage, the way she worked a casual trainer with a red lace jumpsuit was the perfect combo of haute and street. She stayed true to herself and looked good doing it. I think that kind of practical femininity gives women everywhere licence to comfortably slay the world day to day and feel beautiful doing it.

“One of my highlights was the 70 identically-besuited Psy dancers in his signature blue blazers. We were lucky enough to see them being prepared in the wardrobe department. They all included secret padding to fill out the skinny dancers to the more generous Psy-like proportions.”

Make sure you check out District MTV daily, as they will be adding exclusive behind the scenes content from Sundays 2012 MTV EMAs.
