Despite the fact that her ‘The Great Gatsby’ character, Daisy Buchanan, is known for dramatic 20s beauty looks such as bold berry lipstick, smokey eyes and dazzlingly adorned hairbands and wraps, actress Carey Mulligan has been opting for a much more subtle approach to beauty during the press tour for the movie thus far.

Her makeup was so subtle at the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Ball and the Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada ‘The Great Gatsby’ Dresses Opening Exhibit–matte skin, a simple coat of mascara, no eyeshadow and a subtly glossed natural lip–that the barely there approach she took at the film’s world premiere in New York yesterday, almost looks bold! Almost. Makeup artist Georgie Eisdell gave Carey a slightly darker brow, a berry lip and lined her eyes a bit more heavily, all while staying well within the realm of ‘barely there’.

I think it was smart for Carey and Georgie to develop these subtle looks for the Gatsby tour, since the film has such an over-the-top opulence to it that anything dramatic could have come across quite costumey. Also, on the heels of Carey’s stunning but heavily made-up Vogue cover shoot, the subtle approach is a good change of pace for Carey.

Something tells me that Carey might continue these super subtle looks and then pull out all the stops at Cannes, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

To get Carey’s Gatsby World Premiere look, line your top lid only directly in the lashline with a soft pencil like Tarte EmphasEYES High Definition Eye Pencil in Brown.

Add slight contouring to your lids with warm brown tones like those in Dior’s 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Rosy Tan.
