Olivia Munn In Marchesa – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

After bringing a shot of sunny yellow to the Time 100 Gala, Olivia Munn walked a darker line at the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, hosted last night at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

‘The Newsroom’ actress played her own political game here, appealing to two sides of fashion—the refined and the razzle-dazzle—with her Marchesa design.

On the one hand, this was just a simple black dress. On the other, the elaborately embellished bib collar brought a bolt of gleam to the otherwise plain-Jane gown.

With the waterfall of sparkle, Olivia didn’t need a glut of accessories.

She polished off the look with a Marchesa clutch and a simple drop earring, paired with a sleek top-knot and bronze glow.

Too much or just enough?

Julie Bowen In Monique Lhuillier – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

‘Modern Family’ star Julie Bowen was another guest on the who’s who list at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.

She wore a strapless dress from Monique Lhuillier’s Fall 2013 collection, which was steeped in red-carpet options. I’m just not sure this was one of my favourites.

With the chrome pebbled-brick pattern and high-low hemline, the overall effect felt a bit contrived and overly flashy, especially for this event.

The straight line of the sculpted bodice and the loosely hung silhouette also did no justice to Julie’s figure.

Plain black Rupert Sanderson pumps and Neil Lane jewels completed the look, along with an overly styled updo that managed to age this glowing actress. Perhaps if she had worn her hair down, it would have softened the edges here.

Michelle Dockery In Elie Saab – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Michelle Dockery brought some British flair to the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night in Washington, D.C.

The ‘Downton Abbey’ actress showed us our highly anticipated second glance at Elie Saab’s Fall 2013 collection, after Jessica Biel debuted it at the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Ball.

This violet-purple peplum gown with sheer chiffon inlay is another example of a sequin- and bead-free moment from the bling-loving designer. Not that the look was completely shine-free, as metallic bangles and a clutch played nicely with the sculpted belt.

Michelle wore the dress well, although this is a look that’s made for walking, as I missed the magic of the gown’s runway movement.

A glam updo and a hot-fuchsia glossed pout finished the story, although with this ultra-violet colour, I would have liked to have seen a slightly more neutral lippie.

Claire Danes In Prada – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

‘Homeland’ star Claire Danes was a natural at last night’s 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

After going wild for Lanvin at the Time 100 Gala last week, she somewhat returned to her more minimalistic style with this Prada column gown—not that it didn’t have its own measure of bling.

Perhaps the new mom was thinking of her little boy when she selected this baby-blue dress, which also featured cutaway sides and glittery sequin embellishment.

With the slightly precious hue and all that gleam, I’m glad she didn’t pile on bangles or, even worse, a necklace, choosing instead a simple pair of Forevermark diamond studs to accent her blonde wispy waves and petal-pink lippie.

Robin Wright In Rolando Santana Atelier – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

‘House of Cards’ actress Robin Wright must have been laughing at the ‘House of Nerds’ spoof video that opened the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.

Yesterday evening, she wore a navy Rolando Santana Spring 2013 Atelier stretch matte taffeta gown.

At certain angles, the ‘Sonja’ dress’s feminine ruffle, asymmetric neckline just looked like her shoulder strap had fallen down.

But it still won points in my book, as it softened the edgy appeal of Robin’s uber-cropped blonde pixie ‘do.

She kept her makeup minimal (a bronzing glow worked just fine) and her accessories on the light side, with a conservative pair of Ivanka Trump diamond earrings and bracelet and a silver Cecelia clutch.
