Menswear Weekend Red Carpet Roundup

menswear 15 sept

The weekend was none too short on solid menswear looks from actors who took to the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

Tom Hiddleston: Three was his lucky number this past weekend, as the handsome British actor attended a trio of events including the ‘I Saw The Light’ Cast Party at F-Stop on Friday (September 11) followed by EW’s Must List Party at the Thompson Hotel on Saturday and finally the ‘High Rise’ premiere at The Elgin on Sunday. In a totally handsome three-peat, he exclusively wore suits by Polo Ralph Lauren to mighty fine effect. I love how each of his looks were consistently sharp and well-tailored while being different enough to avoid boredom. I thought the three-piece navy pinstripe suit with the lavender shirt was my favourite, but now that double-breasted, windowpane suit matched with a piercing baby-blue shirt is calling my name, too.

Julianne Moore In Proenza Schouler, Valentino Couture, Sonia Rykiel & BOSS – 2015 Toronto International Film Festival

Julianne Moore In Proenza Schouler, Valentino Couture, Sonia Rykiel & BOSS - 2015 Toronto International Film Festival

Making a return to the red carpet, Julianne Moore has made a number of appearances at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, attending no fewer than four last weekend in Toronto, Canada.

Variety Toronto Studio: First up, she was at the Variety Studio on Friday (September 11), donning an embellished version of an LBD from the Proenza Schouler Resort 2016 collection. The studded detail puts a tougher edge on the feminine silhouette of the dress, but her pretty red locks should have been sleekly pulled back from her face on this occasion.

‘Maggie’s Plan’ Premiere: Going from a little black dress to a longer black gown, she wore a Valentino Fall 2015 Couture dress for the premiere on Saturday (September 12) at the Princess of Wales Theatre. I wanted to love this look, but there was something strangely heavy and lacklustre about the chiffon-like layers of dark fabric and the negligee sleeves, likely in part due to the addition of the lining. That said, she did help breathe some life into the dressing-gown-inspired design with the geometric box clutch.

Elizabeth Olsen In Juan Carlos Obando – ‘I Saw The Light’ Toronto Film Festival Premiere & HFPA/InStyle’s Annual TIFF Party

Elizabeth Olsen In Juan Carlos Obando - 'I Saw The Light' Toronto Film Festival Premiere & HFPAInStyle's Annual TIFF Party

Elizabeth Olsen attended the ‘I Saw The Light’ premiere at Ryerson Theatre on Friday (September 11) followed by HFPA/InStyle’s Annual TIFF Party at the Windsor Arms Hotel on Saturday (September 12), both hosted during the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

‘I Saw the Light’ Premiere: Her Juan Carlos Obando Fall 2015 black gown was not only a rather sombre showing but also quite mature for the bright starlet with the bell sleeves and exaggerated peplum none too flattering. Chopard jewels and Brian Atwood heels completed the look.

HFPA/InStyle’s Annual TIFF Party: Also a Juan Carlos Obando Fall 2015 ensemble, this one was a more freshly modern look for Elizabeth that was still in keeping with her black and white minimalist dress code. She paired the spiral asymmetric sleeveless top with black trousers, but it was the styling that I favoured with metallic heels, burgundy clutch and matching oxblood lip adding a touch of sassy attitude.

Alicia Vikander In Louis Vuitton & Rosetta Getty – 2015 Toronto International Film Festival

From the Venice Film Festival to the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Alicia Vikander continued making the rounds with appearances at ‘The Danish Girl’ TIFF premiere, HFPA/InStyle’s Annual TIFF Party, and the Holt Renfrew And Variety Magazine Cast Dinner, all hosted this past weekend in Toronto, Canada.

‘The Danish Girl’ Premiere: Continuing her BDOTW chic streak, she returned to a more minimalistic aesthetic for the TIFF premiere on Saturday (September 12). Her custom-made Louis Vuitton open-back gown was crafted in silk satin, crepe, and leather. I love how this mix of materials created movement across the all-black dress while providing visual interest. Romantic curls injected a note of charming femininity into the edgier look.

HFPA/InStyle’s Annual TIFF Party: Making a quick change, she donned a head-to-toe Louis Vuitton ensemble for the party after the premiere, channeling elegant grace. The Fall 2015 classic tweed dress was edged up with leather studded sandals and a Petite Malle clutch While the charm of the wavy strands was again likeable, I may have preferred a loosely tied-back updo with this tweedy frock—but perhaps she had little time to restyle her hair between events.

Holt Renfrew And Variety Magazine Cast Dinner: Giving the Louis Vuitton looks a night off, she wore a sleekly simple Rosetta Getty Pre-Fall 2015 dress at ‘The Danish Girl’ dinner on Sunday (September 13) held at The Holts Café. You may remember this dual-colour, less-is-more design was previously worn by Elizabeth Olsen, but I was just as content to see it repeated without a jacket this time around.

Naomi Watts In Burberry Prorsum, Vionnet, Fausto Puglisi – 2015 Toronto Film Festival

Naomi Watts In Burberry Prorsum, Vionnet, Fausto Puglisi - 2015 Toronto Film Festival

Over the weekend, Naomi Watts attended the ‘Demolition’ press conference, ‘About Ray’ premiere, and InStyle & HFPA Party, all hosted during the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

‘Demolition’ Press Conference: While her ‘Demolition’ premiere look wasn’t her best moment, this Burberry Prorsum Resort 2016 dress was somewhat redeeming at the press conference on Friday (September 11). I love the romantic feminine appeal of the lace contrasted by the sharper structure of the dress and its geometric black paneling.

‘About Ray’ Premiere: A day later, everything was coming up rosy for the actress who attended the screening at the Princess of Wales Theatre in a Vionnet Resort 2016 suit with Jimmy Choo ‘Minny’ metallic sandals. I’m not always a fan of Pepto Bismol pink on the red carpet, but I found this mannish statement with colour-blocked crimson lapels a striking study in contrasts. Shame about the distracting wrinkles throughout.

InStyle & HFPA Party: Making a quick change from her premiere suit to sexy lace, she later made the party rounds at the Windsor Arms Hotel in a Fausto Puglisi Resort 2016 frock styled with a Rauwolf clutch. No matter how hard I try, I simply cannot get past the distracting neon-green apron that dominates the dress—it is reminiscent of a vampy French maid costume gone wrong.
