Ashley Olsen & Mary-Kate Olsen In Vintage Paco Rabanne – 2018 Met Gala

The Olsen twins always present a theme in their own unique manner so I was anticipating their arrival at the 2018 Met Gala on Monday evening (May 7) in New York City.

Mary-Kate Olsen: Opting for an austere approach, she wore vintage Paco Rabanne. The billowing silhouette with belted waist denotes the theme, but it’s the crystal-adorned chest piece that captured the attention. I’m sure many will wish she wore her hair up to fully show it off.

Ashley Olsen: There was definitely a bohemian spirit about her vintage Paco Rabanne ensemble that felt true to her style. The opulent colours and bejewelled headpiece play into it, but also reference the theme. There’s a lot of fabric, but it doesn’t swamp her petite frame.

Diddy In Musika Frere & Cassie In Thom Browne – 2018 Met Gala

Diddy and Cassie looked sharp at the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute Gala on Monday (May 7) in New York City.

Diddy: The multi-hyphenate embraced the night’s M.O. with a Musika Frere suit. Theme or no theme, the all-white ensemble and longer jacket present a sharp, stylish finish. It also felt very true to his personal style with the blinged-out accessories and his trademark glasses.

Cassie: Clad in Thom Browne, the singer’s look was the perfect foil to the puritan layers of Diddy’s outfit. It showcased the designer’s unique take on tailoring while alluding to the theme. The hair is a bit of letdown. Methinks she would have benefited from a statement headpiece to dramatize the ensemble.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge In Christopher Kane – 2018 Met Gala

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was in attendance at the 2018 Met Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday (May 7).

The ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ actress was outfitted in a blushing Christopher Kane Fall 2018 look. The style captured the designer’s mastery of prints and texture and will no doubt be an interesting talking point as the ‘More Joy’ illustration references ‘The Joy of Sex,’ a 1972 illustrated manual of positions the designer was inspired by for the collection.

With the feathery trim it was a whimsical look and an interesting subversion on the night’s theme.

Mindy Kaling In Vassilis Zoulias – 2018 Met Gala

Mindy Kaling was back on the red carpet at the 2018 Met Gala on Monday (May 7) in New York City.

The ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ actress looked positively regal in her Vassilis Zoulias ensemble. There isn’t need for heavy surface embellishment because the refined elegance of the style has such impact between its pleated front and draped back.

Her headpiece was one of the most ornate of the evening. With the sophisticated dress, I foresee some mistaking it for a princess look rather than the ‘Heavenly Bodies’ theme, but the entire look has been crafted in reference to it.

Mackenzie Davis In Chloe – 2018 Met Gala

Mackenzie Davis was a beauty in rich red at the 2018 Met Gala on Monday evening (May 7) in New York City.

The ‘Tully’ actress wore a bespoke Chloe gown which paid tribute to the theme with its white collar and floor skimming silhouette. It brought to mind priest robes but there’s more to it than that. The look is a study of contrasts with the sheer skirt and thigh-high boots juxtaposing the modest top.

The deep burgundy colour references the theme and the bohemian nature of the designer.

Madonna In Jean Paul Gaultier Couture – 2018 Met Gala

You could easily say that the ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme of the 2018 Met Gala on Monday (May 7) in New York City was made for Madonna.

The ‘Like a Virgin’ singer was born for this red carpet, after all. And, rock the theme Madge did.

But, rather than go for a white look of purity, she went in the opposite direction with a Jean Paul Gaultier Couture extravaganza that her stylist Eyob Yohannes likened to an ‘Immaculate Goth Queen.’

The black ball gown featured a sheer cross cutout that you would be forgiven for missing initially, as her mesh black veil and elaborate cross-bedecked crown commanded so much attention up front.

She carried a giant black rose to finish the dark, theatrical spectacle that won’t be soon forgotten.
