Fan Bing Bing In Chris Bu Kewen – 2011 Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony

This time last year we had just been officially introduced to the wonderful Fan Bing Bing.

The Asian beauty opted to wear a traditional robe to the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival like she did last year.

Her red gown was embroidered with white cranes with a bow detail on the bodice.

The gown was designed by her stylist – Chris Bu Kewen.

I don’t think Fan Bing Bing knows subtle, which is why I love her.

This dramatic red gown was paired with a high bouffant, stunning Cartier jewels and a pearl embellished clutch.

Hopefully Fan is at Cannes for the duration as I can’t wait to see what else she gives us.

FC! do you want to kown the designer of this gown. which is designed by fan bingbing’s dresser . exactly BDOTW!!! as perfect and stunning as dragon gown

  15. Mia Spring May 12, 2011 at 9:16 am #

Oh, she’s never disappointed me!! I DO LOVE this look.
the white Red-crowned crane is the symbol of long-life, elegance and peace in Chinese culture, also used to describe beautiful people and long-time love. Whereas dragorn is the more masculine, used to describe the power of the emperor . So Chinese criticism said she was more like a queen tried not to be too ambitious, just have hun and relaxed .

  16. Alicat May 12, 2011 at 9:14 am #

She looks so different to everybody else with this Asian inspired gown. I love the knock out scarlet colour, red of course meaning good fortune. The hair and makeup are making a strong statement, but this is needed to balance the impact of the gown.

  17. Billie May 12, 2011 at 8:18 am #

Typical Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty style: crane, towering plate made, lanterns, made it kind of grace and luxury.

  18. f4fashion May 12, 2011 at 7:07 am #

There are brand ambassadors, and there are fashion/culture ambassadors. Fan shows how beautiful and interesting the oriental culture is. LOVE the embroidery.

  19. miyuki May 12, 2011 at 4:58 am #

    Very beautiful!

  20. Diana May 12, 2011 at 3:52 am #

Am I the only person who doesn’t mind the hair? I feel like she always goes for the dramatic hair but she always works it well.

Also, I’m pretty sure I see elements of the Tang Dynasty style in her dress (especially in the bow and the train). Ugh, this makes me love her even more (if that’s possible!)

    • Fashion Critic May 12, 2011 at 10:13 am #

      I like the hair too

  21. Pye May 12, 2011 at 3:12 am #

i am so excited about what she would wear in the following days, that makes her special from the other stars.

  22. Wendy May 12, 2011 at 2:41 am #

Fan Bing Bing and her makeup artist together designed this red Crane dress! Fabulous!

    • Fashion Critic May 12, 2011 at 10:28 am #

      thanks for the info

  23. Carolina May 12, 2011 at 1:44 am #

Dragon robe was amazing, but this one just didn’t work for me.

  24. Jennesia May 12, 2011 at 1:29 am #

The hair is kind of scary when looking at it for long periods of time (not by choice i was trying to determine if i liked it). She is so beautiful and elegant and i felt she pulled of the look extraordinarily.

  25. Zoe May 12, 2011 at 1:15 am #

    Love her hair!!!

  26. June May 12, 2011 at 1:00 am #

Fan is outstanding!!! She is gorgeous!!!

  27. Thomas Monks May 11, 2011 at 11:54 pm #

did Fans MET invite get lost in the mail? Anna has to be blind to not have invited her as she is such a fashion plate and she would have work glad to see fan has her mojo back after not being so sure with her past two outings this blows me away

  28. D May 11, 2011 at 10:40 pm #

put fan besides gong li…..hummmm who is more gorgous? hard one

    • Jennie May 12, 2011 at 12:48 pm #

      gong li for me!

  29. idarklight May 11, 2011 at 9:58 pm #

The crane dress has a similar connotation as the dragon dress last year. In China, there’s an idiom called “he li ji qun,” or “like a crane standing amongst chickens.”

    • bella May 12, 2011 at 1:09 am #

      that means the best!

    • cliff May 14, 2011 at 1:09 pm #

yes,I’m surprised at your mention of Chinese idiom, which is used very properly here..

  30. mari May 11, 2011 at 9:58 pm #

Girl won’t let us down. This is what I’d expect from her, knowing her for a year here in your blog, another string of amazing looks, I hope.
She’s unafraid of trying trying unexpected looks.

  31. Jing May 11, 2011 at 9:29 pm #

I love her from the very first start~ she is just more than just outlook, as years passed now people praise her for this Chinese characteristic show, however she is always a cute, and hardworking young girl.

  32. Marvel May 11, 2011 at 9:27 pm #

I like the look but the hair is a big no

  33. Rashmi May 11, 2011 at 9:17 pm #

I love the gown… But dont like the hair or her makeup… Her eyebrows look scary

  34. Moxie May 11, 2011 at 9:06 pm #

FC — if you were to have a Fan Bing Bing alone best dressed poll, I don’t know how I could choose between the crane dress and the dragon robe! Both are wonderful!

    • Fashion Critic May 11, 2011 at 9:07 pm #

I would go for the Dragon robe…East meets west 🙂

  35. Alexandra May 11, 2011 at 8:39 pm #

outstanding. now i can’t decide if i prefer the dragon robe or this one.

  36. Emi May 11, 2011 at 8:37 pm #

Ok, the dress is beautiful and it’s nice from her to pay homage to her country… but her hair is totally awful!!

    • Lils May 11, 2011 at 10:00 pm #

      • Martin May 12, 2011 at 3:37 pm #

Totally agree. Fan in her Dragon Robe gown from last year’s Cannes Film Festival made it into my Top 10 gowns of the year but I just can’t drag my eyes away from that frightening hairstyle and that super-harsh make-up. This is veering way too close to drag queen territory for me. Such a shame, because the dress is divine.

  37. KEN May 11, 2011 at 8:36 pm #

    is that Cranes?

  38. Hisadora May 11, 2011 at 8:35 pm #

She looks amazing!!!!! The dress is so beautiful and theatrical. It is going to be a hard decision on the best dressed of the day!

    • mol May 11, 2011 at 9:14 pm #

‘Theatrical’ is the perfect descriptor of this, and while others don’t like her hair, I think it fits in with the whole dramatic flair of it all – she’s always so excitingly entertaining!

      • Terry May 11, 2011 at 10:40 pm #

I agree. Bouffant hairdos are dangerous hairstyles (just think of SJP a few days ago), but Bing totally owns this one. The hairstyle, the dress, the jewellery, not to mention the make-up: everything is gorgeous.

    • KateS May 12, 2011 at 2:53 am #

Very theatrical and OTT, which make it perfect for the event. It’s also true to her personal style, which I always admire.

  39. LizLemooooon May 11, 2011 at 8:29 pm #

Now THIS is how you werk it. I ADORE her, she looks fabulous, note perfect, chic, glamorous and classic. In love with everything.

  40. Laura May 11, 2011 at 8:23 pm #

Amazing and dramatic. No one could pull this off like Fan can.

  41. Kelly May 11, 2011 at 8:18 pm #

This is unbelievably perfect!! BDOTW …scratch that BDOTY worthy for sure.

  42. Moxie May 11, 2011 at 8:17 pm #

Not a fan of the hair, but LOVE the dress.

    • Rebecca May 11, 2011 at 8:31 pm #

    • Jen May 11, 2011 at 11:25 pm #

Me too. That hair is no, but the dress is so much win.

  43. Jennifer May 11, 2011 at 8:15 pm #

I take it back… this is BDOTW…. Fan is flawless…. love love love!!!

  44. yy May 11, 2011 at 8:15 pm #

Fan Bing Bing looks beautiful! But those are cranes not swans on her dress

    • Fashion Critic May 11, 2011 at 8:18 pm #

      ta x

  45. Paddy M May 11, 2011 at 8:14 pm #

Divine! I think she looks even better than she did last year!

  46. dee May 11, 2011 at 8:13 pm #

The Fashion at Cannes puts the MET to shame! Fan is Outstanding!

    • Fashion Critic May 11, 2011 at 8:19 pm #

    • Alexandra May 11, 2011 at 8:40 pm #

true! MET was kind of disappointing and meh.

    • Pablo May 11, 2011 at 8:51 pm #

Absolutelly agree. Go drama queen Fan 🙂

  48. Victoria May 11, 2011 at 8:12 pm #

  49. maria May 11, 2011 at 8:09 pm #

this look is so gorgeous. I love the cut of the dress, the colour, the embroidery and all her accessories.

  50. noo May 11, 2011 at 8:08 pm #

    her hair is scary

    • pauline May 12, 2011 at 9:32 pm #

      I think that is style

      • MG May 13, 2011 at 7:00 am #

This is a traditional Chinese hairstyle, mostly used in Tang Dynasty. I’m pleasantly surprised with it

    • Sunny May 15, 2011 at 4:15 pm #

Both this dress and her hairstyle are classic Tang Dynasty style. The dress needs such a hairstyle to match itself.

      • noo May 16, 2011 at 12:39 pm #

thanks for the clarification 😀 i’ve seen pictures of Tang Dynasty fashion before but i never thought of that with her hair because usually they wore accessories in it!!!!
