Kate Mara In Prada – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Before Kate Mara took a seat with her ‘House of Cards’ co-stars Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey at the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner last night in Washington D.C., she dealt her own fashion card on the red carpet.

At first glance, her crisp white Prada gown just registered as plain.

But Miuccia Prada’s signature quirk factor came into play with the oversized bow plastered to the neckline and the slightly exaggerated poof of the three-quarter sleeve.

Another unexpected, cool-girl twist—and the only real spot of colour here—was her zesty lime-green, embellished Prada clutch.

To match the simple vintage mood of her dress, her styling was effortlessly done with a slate-blue smokey eye, nude lippie and side-parted bun.

Sophia Bush In Lela Rose – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Sophia Bush said ‘I do’ to a spot at the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, hosted last night in Washington D.C.

Wearing a Lela Rose Spring 2013 gown, she channeled a bridal mood with this barely blush gown that featured a high-low front hem followed behind by a sweeping train.

The heavy skirt layers, the embossed damask-like fabric, not to mention the overwrought floral-embroidered bodice, were all just too overwhelming for the actress’s petite frame.

She did pull her hair back, but her bangs still weighed down the styling.

I maybe could see a younger teen cutie like Elle Fanning or Kiernan Shipka pulling off a shorter version of this dress… perhaps.

Sophia has recently had us questioning her style. Does this look get your vote or not?

Kate Walsh In Carolina Herrera – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Kate Walsh made a graphic fashion statement on the red carpet of the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, hosted last night at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

The ‘Private Practice’ star grabbed stares in a dramatic, black-and-white strapless ball gown from the Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2013 collection.

With the exploded chrysanthemum print and diaphanous layers, the dress had a big, bold and beautiful story to tell. And I loved it for exactly those reasons.

A sleek ponytail, a rosy lip, and just the right amount of sparkle with flower-inspired earrings by Norman Silverman completed this sophisticated entree.

Katy Perry In Giambattista Valli Couture – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Katy Perry was on her best fashion behavior at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.

She wore a conservative (for her!) Giambattista Valli Fall 2012 Couture silk draped gown.

Recently embarking on a blue-infused ‘The Smurfs 2′ promo circuit, the chameleon-like songstress changed her colours with this moss-green dress, which was a gorgeous hue with her jet-black locks.

I barely recognized the stripped-down version of this design from its runway predecessor, so covered it was in an embarrassment of flora and fauna.

She did keep one element of Katy-like quirk in the look in homage to the runway’s theatrical forest—the branch-inspired bronze belt. But it only whispered of the dress’s original garden state.

I could actually see the more free-spirited fashion side of Katy wearing the butterfly headpiece, but I’m glad she didn’t on this occasion.

Even her makeup, a classic winged eye and pink lip, was on the subdued side.

Olivia Munn In Marchesa – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

After bringing a shot of sunny yellow to the Time 100 Gala, Olivia Munn walked a darker line at the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, hosted last night at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

‘The Newsroom’ actress played her own political game here, appealing to two sides of fashion—the refined and the razzle-dazzle—with her Marchesa design.

On the one hand, this was just a simple black dress. On the other, the elaborately embellished bib collar brought a bolt of gleam to the otherwise plain-Jane gown.

With the waterfall of sparkle, Olivia didn’t need a glut of accessories.

She polished off the look with a Marchesa clutch and a simple drop earring, paired with a sleek top-knot and bronze glow.

Too much or just enough?

Julie Bowen In Monique Lhuillier – 2013 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

‘Modern Family’ star Julie Bowen was another guest on the who’s who list at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.

She wore a strapless dress from Monique Lhuillier’s Fall 2013 collection, which was steeped in red-carpet options. I’m just not sure this was one of my favourites.

With the chrome pebbled-brick pattern and high-low hemline, the overall effect felt a bit contrived and overly flashy, especially for this event.

The straight line of the sculpted bodice and the loosely hung silhouette also did no justice to Julie’s figure.

Plain black Rupert Sanderson pumps and Neil Lane jewels completed the look, along with an overly styled updo that managed to age this glowing actress. Perhaps if she had worn her hair down, it would have softened the edges here.
