Ahna O’Reilly also attended the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted on Saturday (March 1) at Santa Monica Beach in California.

The actress skipped a frock in favour of an Elie Saab Spring 2014 ensemble, consisting of a creamy-white top, embellished in watercolour florals, and matching high-waisted, tailored pants.

While we certainly aren’t accustomed to seeing a non-gown Elie Saab moment on the red carpet, this look had the potential to be every bit as stunning as those dresses.

However, I was missing the crisp, bright appeal that captivated me on the runway. A victim perhaps of poor styling, the chic separates were weighed down by clunky Aldo platform sandals and a garish hot-pink clutch.

Melonie Diaz In Preen – Film Independent Spirit Awards 2014

Melonie Diaz brought a burst of colour to the blue carpet at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, held on Saturday (March 1) at Santa Monica Beach in California.

The ‘Fruitvale Station’ actress and nominee wore a kaleidoscope of a dress from the Preen Spring 2014 collection.

The white, sleeveless frock was emboldened with an abstract, zig-zag geometric print in a bright palette of hues.

In this case, I don’t mind the revisions from the runway design. After all, we’ve seen enough sheer hemlines as it is.

Nor I am bothered by the selection of black pumps, even if a sandal may have been preferred. The heels, along with a minimalistic black VBH handbag, allowed the boldness of the artsy dress to take centre stage.

However, her fuchsia lip was an excellent non-black accessory. W. Britt gold earrings and a bracelet topped off the look.

Aubrey Plaza attended the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted Saturday (March 1) at Santa Monica Beach in California.

The ‘Parks and Recreation’ funny girl was pulling no punches when it came to her Preen Pre-Fall 2014 dark-navy frock, edged in a pop of sherbet orange.

The full-skirted dress had the chic sophistication of a vintage silhouette—this was ’50s housewife, with a fierce twist.

I loved that she infused it with a bold edge via a fantastic pair of Brian Atwood ‘Starlet’ zebra-print orange pumps, not to mention a bright red lippie and darkly lacquered manicure.

A Lauren Merkin clutch and understated Shylee Rose jewels completed the look.

Brie Larson also joined the chic set of starlets at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted Saturday (March 1) at Santa Monica Beach in California.

Nominated for Best Female Lead for her film, ‘Short Team 12,’ the actress looked to the progressive design house of Maison Martin Margiela for her strapless black dress from the Spring 2013 collection.

Although the silhouette was simple, it was certainly still statement-making, what with the exaggerated sweetheart neckline and front slit.

She added additional polish via a gold cage bracelet, Christian Louboutin ‘Decollete’ nude pumps and a cream-coloured Smythson ‘Soho Diary’ clutch, with a casual ponytail and barely-there makeup putting forth a beach-y spin.

While I appreciate the overall direction of the look, I still wish it had delivered a slightly more figure-flattering fit at some angles.

Reese Witherspoon In Giambattista Valli Couture – Film Independent Spirit Awards 2014

Reese Witherspoon made a delightfully bold entrance at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted at Santa Monica Beach in Santa Monica, California today (March 1).

The ‘Mud’ actress dressed up in a Giambattista Valli Spring 2014 Couture design.

The abstractly printed silk beaded top and draped silk skirt combined the most engaging shade of intense blue with black, which was further enhanced with dimensional, floral-shaped decoration that climbed up the bodice.

The geometric, colour-block white and black panel that cut through the bottom of the top only contributed even more modern edge to the leggy look.

She accessorized with a petite black ladylike Dior handbag and black Christian Louboutin ‘Leonor Fini’ sandals.

Softly hued makeup and a slightly messy updo provided the perfect counterpoint to the dramatic and directional style of her ensemble.
