2018 SAG Awards Menswear Red Carpet Roundup

Many of the fellows at the 2018 SAG Awards weren’t content to just wear the standard black tux, making for quite the scene-stealing list of looks on Sunday (January 21) in LA.

Noah Schnapp: The young ‘Stranger Things’ star continued to win my affection with a lesson in all that is dapper in his custom-made velvet tuxedo by Stella McCartney paired with Jésù-SégunLondon slipper-style shoes, a Brackish bowtie, and Mrs Bow Tie pocket square. What a charmer.

Sterling K. Brown:
The ‘This Is Us’ star won the best actor award, and his look was equally stellar in this Giorgio Armani tuxedo styled with a Chopard timepiece and cufflinks. This was a lesson in the appeal of classic style with a modern twist thanks to the shades and the slim-line, slightly cropped proportions.

Dacre Montgomery:
I liked this Giorgio Armani ensemble for its unorthodox twist on the traditional tux in the chocolate-brown hue and exaggerated shawl label. Wearing his dress shirt unbuttoned at the top added a rebellious flavour that actually echoed his ‘Stranger Things’ character quite well. Montblanc cufflinks completed the look.

2018 SAG Awards Red Carpet Roundup

We always do our best to cover everyone, but a few slip through the net. Here is our final sweep of the red carpet for the 2018 SAG Awards.

Kate Nash: My first reaction to Kate in this Bora Aksu dress was, “yikes”, followed by “what on earth possessed you?” Too many frills, too prairie and too much going on; especially from the waist down. This was easily my least favourite of the night.

Niecy Nash: The actress, who was one of the presenters on the night, wore a gorgeous green-hued Julea Domani gown. As always Niecy leaves me spellbound, as she consistently picks the right looks to enhance her gorgeous figure.

Betty Gabriel In Phuong My – 2018 SAG Awards

Betty Gabriel attended the 2018 SAG Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 21).

The ‘Get Out’ actress wore a Phuong My dress that is both unexpected and dramatic.

I can see this dress being quite polarizing among readers, but I for one, am sold. The design of this gown would fall flat in just about any other fabric I can think of–seriously, picture it–but in this unique, tartan-esque print, the dress is pushed into a league all its own. It’s bold, it’s a risk and Betty pulls it off completely.

I also love that her makeup artist chose to match her smokey eye makeup with the color of the dress. The deep green is a fresh choice that really elevates the look beyond what more traditional colors could. The fresh mauve lip is also a smart choice, since it is slightly unexpected, just like the gown.

Maya Rudolph In Zac Posen – 2018 SAG Awards

Maya Rudolph attended the 2018 SAG Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 21).

The actress and comedienne wore a Zac Posen dress with a floral overlay and Irene Neuwirth jewels.

I love Maya, and I love Zac Posen, which is why it pains me to say I do not love this dress! The colors and the fabrication make it look like something you could get for $60 at a department store, and it feels wholly out-of-place on the red carpet!

I do love the long ruffle at the hemline, but that pretty much sums up what I like about the dress.

Am I being too harsh? Am I missing something wonderful here?

Vanessa Kirby In Valentino – 2018 SAG Awards

Vanessa Kirby stepped out at the 2018 SAG Awards on Sunday (January 21) in LA, joining Sally Hawkins and Samara Weaving.

The actress, who was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for her work in ‘The Crown,’ wore a Valentino Spring 2018 dress.

The pale pink gown was invigorated with floral appliqués resulting in a romantic bohemian vibe.

She simplified the silhouette by removing the halter detail which would have allowed the embroidery to shine.

However, I think her strong hair and makeup have overpowered the frock. I understand her decision to complete the look with a red lip, but the contouring and wet-look ponytail took away from everything else.

Thoughts?

Sally Hawkins In Christian Dior Couture – 2018 SAG Awards

Sally Hawkins attended the 2018 SAG Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 21).

The nominee wore a Christian Dior Fall 2017 Couture gown with a Tyler Ellis clutch, Stuart Weitzman ‘Queen’ pumps and Irene Neuwirth jewels.

Never one to shy away from bold fashion, Sally wears this in a way that many people could not. While it is definitely what many would refer to as a ‘lot of look’, I love how graphic and unique it is. The length is perfect on Sally’s petite frame, and I can’t help but smile, because she looks like she’s genuinely enjoying wear it.

I will say, I miss the belt from the runway presentation. Without it, the center of the print looks like a bullseye, and I find myself staring straight at it, every time I look at the gown.

Mary J Blige In Jean-Louis Sabaji – 2018 SAG Awards

Mary J. Blige attended the 2018 SAG Awards on Sunday (January 21) in Los Angeles, California, where she was nominated for two awards.

The ‘Mudbound’ actress skipped shimmering embellishment for a Jean-Louis Sabaji dress that had a striking feather effect.

I’m sure that there will be many ‘Black Swan’ comparisons for the way the long white sleeve and feathers fade to black.

The detail was unique but very flattering because of how it drew attention to her face and frame.

David Webb jewels added some sparkle.
