Cushnie et Ochs Fall 2012

For Cushnie et Ochs’ Fall 2012 collection, Carly Cushnie & Michelle Ochs were inspired by Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In- the story about a surgeon’s obsession with creating a protective second skin immune to damage.

Their femme fatale collection didn’t stray far away from their signature body-con dresses punctuated with modern details such as sexy cut-outs, zipper accents and zigzag seaming.

They did experiment this season with draping and separates which including leather pants paired with a fur trim coat and black top with a silver fitted skirt.

I was delighted to see more colour in this collection with pops of cobalt blue and green, with the rest of the colour palette including their favourite colours, black and silver plus ecru.

Jason Wu Fall 2012

There were no tea-dresses or feathers presented during the Jason Wu Fall 2012 presentation yesterday.

The girlie girl maestro surprised us by kick starting the show with the opening of two large red doors, a puff of smoke and the sound of a gong, before the models stormed the runway – hard and fast.

This presentation was broken down into three themes: Mao military, Qing Dynasty and ‘40s Hollywood version of China.

Military jackets were glamorized with fur accents, quilting or a black lace.

In reference to Qing Dynasty bold shouldered sheaths inspired by traditional Chinese cheongsam dresses in gold brocades or embellished with elaborate Swarovski Elements took the runway.

More Swarovski Elements were to be had on the luxe eveningwear part of this collection, which including a stunning black gown with a thigh-high split and embellished shoulders.

We also saw belted coats, capes, leather pants, leather coats with fur collars, fitted pants and a beautiful brocade suit with a fur collar.

The Jason Wu woman still resides uptown, but she has a bit more attitude.

Key accessories included leather gloves, studded belts, bags and clutches, black tassel earrings and red tassel hats.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012

Tadashi Shoji’s Fall 2012 collection was presented during New York Fashion Week yesterday afternoon.

The designer, who’s known for dressing Oscar, SAG and Golden Globe Award winning actresses, was inspired by the prosperous Golden Age of Shanghai in a glamorous, modern time.

He romanced us with opulent jewel-tone dresses and gowns with lace pattern tiers, and cowl-back gowns with embellished lace panels.

The collection ranged from floaty chiffon, lace and silk to a much heavier velvet.

Rodney Cutler for Cutler/Redken styled the models’ hair into a simple side-parted bun to complement their striking red pouts.

Jil Sander Navy Fall 2012

My first Fall 2012 presentation this season was Jil Sander Navy.

When we think of the mainline collection, we think of Tilda Swinton, Karen Elson and Erin O’Connor, but Jil Sander Navy is aimed at a totally different woman.

The ‘Sporty Meets Couture’ collection, which evokes 60s minimalism, mostly consisted of cute above-the-knee shirt dresses with full skirts and embellished collars.

Sporty sweaters were paired with jacquard cropped pants or printed skirts and puffer jackets with A-line skirts.

The outerwear was presented in mostly dark navy or black. The one with the fur collar stood out the most.

The backpacks and satchels had a ‘back to school’ feel to them, whilst the elegant clutches and purses would make for the perfect accessory on a night out.

Other accessories included leather gloves, platform shoes, leather flats and headbands in satin, leather and velvet.

The collection will be available from July and will range in price from approx $700 to $900.

Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2012

Jason Wu’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection was one of his most luxurious and sophisticated to date.

‘Charley Harper meets the Maharaja’ is how Jason describes his collection. By mixing the rich colour palette of the Maharajah with the graphic work of Harper, he has created a charismatic collection.

With camel, black and navy as the grounding colours, the collection has vibrant burnt orange, leafy greens and rich burgundy.

Jason continues to play up masculinity meets femininity with sporty sweaters and buttoned-up blouses paired with tailored colour-block pants and oversized coats. A navy brocade tuxedo with a black-sheer blouse makes for a strong, seductive look.

On the flip side, dainty patterned A-line dresses have a retro vibe, but with a cinched leather knotted belt and long leather gloves they keep the look modern.

Fitted dresses with long-knit or sheer sleeves ooze 60s glamour, which I can picture being favoured by Dita von Teese.

A richly embroidered camel cape was my favourite from Jason’s outerwear, but he also presented a navy windowpane Victorian cape coat and an anorak ‘suit’.

Other standout details included opulent embroidery, houndstooth panelling, and leather and sequined collars.

For the red carpet Jason went for dark, romantic, seductive elegance which I can picture on many gorgeous brunettes plus Diane Kruger, of course.

Favourites: Short sleeve sweater with colour-block pants and navy brocade tuxedo

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Rachel Weisz, Diane Kruger, Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, Leighton Meester, Hilary Swank, Michelle Monaghan, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Liv Tyler, Michelle Obama, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Freida Pinto

J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2012

The J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2012 collection is probably the most beautiful yet with the designer calling it ‘Unapologetic Luxury’.

Gilles Mendel presented a series of beautiful dresses and laidback uptown separates which included sumptuous furs, scintillating shearlings, sophisticated sheaths and screen siren gowns.

Lush Russian red fox furs were paired with dramatic above-the-elbow leather opera gloves. Cigarette pants are made uber cool when paired with layered sheer tops and a fur trimmed coat. An open back, makes a seemingly simple sheath very sexy.

Red carpet worthy gowns in ecru, rust, red, teal, navy, white, slate grey, rust, salmon pink and nude were mostly strapless or off-the-shoulder, but once adorned with a fur stole or fur vest it makes for the perfect late winter evening luxe look.

With awards season just around the corner, I’m sure we will see these gowns threading the red carpet very soon, especially that gorgeous blush strapless chiffon layered gown – ‘Hello Taylor Swift’.

Favourites: Ivory sheath dress and blush strapless gown

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Taylor Swift, Emma Stone, Andrea Riseborough, Mila Kunis, Shailene Woodley, Jessica Chastain, Blake Lively, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Michelle Williams

Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2012

We headed to the Upper East Side to take in the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2012 show yesterday afternoon.

For the upcoming pre-fall season, ODR presented a series of 70s-inspired looks that felt very ‘smart and stylish secretary by day, sexy city gal-about-town by night.’

Chic skirt suits, colourful shift dresses, and swingy wide-leg trousers were shown alongside dazzling cardigans and fur boleros. Brighter shades like lemon, magenta, melon and azure were peppered here and there, mingling with traditional autumnal hues of bordeaux, camel, gray, as well as intricate black and white patterns.

But the devil is in the detailsor in this case, the accoutrements. Vintage-style cloche caps felt much more modern next to the glitzy jeweled earrings, ornate cocktail rings, flashy brooches, and extravagant necklaces that jazzed up each look, as did the box clutches, skinny belts, and oversize sunnies.

Below the waist, sheer dotted tights made a prominent appearance on the runway, worn with thigh high boots and loafers, which were surprisingly refashioned into furry, pointy toe high-heel mule and wedge variations.

As for beauty, lacquered center-parted strands styled into looped off-to-the-side ponytails (finished with a girlish bow!) paired with popping pink pouts and over-flushed cheeks gave the collection a youthful twist.

And no ODLR show would be complete without a few red-carpet ready ensembles; flowy floor-length frocks fashioned from delicate pleated silk slinked down the catwalk alongside cute cocktail dresses, which came in an array of lacy, sparkly, embellished, metallic, fringed forms.

Favourites: Floral print dress and platinum lame gown

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Hilary Swank, Andrea Riseborough, Anne Hathaway, Kristin Davis, Jessica Chastain, Iman, Anna Wintour, Sarah Jessica Parker, Barbara Walters, Hilary Clinton and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

My New York Fashion Week – Highs & Lows

Here are a few highs and lows from my week during New York Fashion Week.

These are my top 11 looks from the shows I attended in no particular order, but the Zac Posen edelweiss gown was my favourite look from Spring 2012.

Top 5 Shows: Zac Posen (Glamorous Red Carpet Awards Season Gowns from Look 1 to 35), Oscar de la Renta (Big Gowns, Big Name Models, Big Hair), Prabal Gurung (The Christopher Kane of New York – Crazy, Sexy, Cool), J. Mendel (I Wanted Every Piece including the Shoes) and Preen (Pretty Pastels with an Edge).

Stylists: I met so many stylists including uber stylist/designer Rachel Zoe this season. Whether I have given their clients a good or bad reviews, they are appreciating what I’m doing which is really exciting.

Reunion With Twitter Buddies: For 6 months of the year I spend my time tweeting, retweeting and replying to messages from my fashionable friends across the pond. It’s always great to have a FW reunion. This season I met @PurseBlog for the first time after being a fan of her blog for over 3 years.

Edit Chauffer Driven Car: It was so refreshing not have to fight 200 fashion folk for a taxi after a show for just one day.

The Weather: They said it would rain all week but the sunshine held out until the last day, so it was strappy sandals every day.

theOutnet.com: For the second season in a row my friends over at theOutnet.com dressed me for New York Fashion Week. It’s always fun playing dress up in designer pieces.

Adding New Designers To My Schedule: This season I was very excited to add Victoria Beckham, Marc Jacobs and Luca Luca to my schedule.

Staying In An Apartment: This season I stayed in an apartment in New York. It was the best decision I ever made as I wasn’t awoken by room service who didn’t read the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign or the dude who wants to refill the mini bar at 9am when I’m trying to get some shut eye.

Alexander Skarsgård: I saw him at the Mulberry party. He is so hot that I couldn’t bear to look him in eye in fear I would faint.

Magnolia Bakery: Serve the best cupcakes and cheesecakes in the world.

Marchesa: There was only 1 low. Not being invited to the Marchesa show. They have every right not to invite me as not Anna Wintour or Tim Blanks, but as a huge supporter of the brand I was frankly devastated. Previous seasons I have run to the nearest Starbucks to upload the pictures on my blog. At this point I still haven’t looked at the collection on Style.com.

Marc Jacobs Spring 2012

I was very excited to attend my first Marc Jacobs show which closed New York Fashion Week.

The Marc Jacobs Spring 2012 show started (on-time) with curtains drawing back to reveal models lounging on chairs Fosse-style before taking the runway one by one which was timed to perfection.

Marc Jacobs presented an interesting mash up of 20s and 60s style pairing 20s flapper dresses with plastic cowboy boots and cellophane coats.

We also saw futuristic materials with interesting cuts, bold shapes and experimental textures.

The colour palette was just as varied with pretty pink, mint and lemon pastels, mixed with jewel tone and metallic hues.

I can’t wait to see who will be the first to wear this sporty, youthful, fun collection.

I loved the cellophane skirts and dresses as they are so daring and unexpected. We often say that certain stars would look great in a trash bag, now let’s see that rings true on the red carpet.

Key accessories included turbans, cowboy boots, fringed lady-like totes and clutches, plus bi-colour bowling bags and Mary Jane heels.
