Red Carpet Fashion Awards

The Michael Kors Fall 2012 collection started with a selection of red, black and plaid-all-over looks.

After the African influences of Spring 2012, the designer went back to basics by presenting many key staples to keep us warm and stylish for fall on a colour palette of red, black, camel and grey.

With the theme being ‘rugged elegance’, we saw fur collared coats, leather dresses, chunky-knit turtlenecks and sweater dresses.

On the less rugged, more elegant side, the designer presented a beautiful herringbone mohair sheath with ombre feathers, a black leather blouse paired with cropped pants and a mohair skirt suit.

Between the statement furs, blanket coats, fringed ponchos and menswear, we saw some beautiful red carpet gowns.

They sparkled with crystal and paillette embellishments and dazzled with plunging necklines, keyhole necklines and open backs.

Key accessories included an oversized fur hat, like the ones we saw at Marc Jacobs which were more ‘Ladies Day’ at Ascot than ‘Mad Hatter’, shawls, scars, muffs, leather gloves, Oxford boots, Mary Janes, framed doctor’s bags and satchels.

Oscar de la Renta’s presentation showcased plenty of jewels for fall. Not jewel tones, but actual jewels.

The collection was dominated by jewels, with jewel prints and jewel accents giving the prints a 3D effect.

Each model wore a diamante-accented satin headband and some walked the runway with a bejewelled leather belt.

On a colour palette of sky blue, rose, teal and taupe that we don’t normally associate with fall, we saw the usual elegance we come to associate with Oscar de la Renta but with a surprisingly youthful twist.

We saw shorter hemlines, playful tutus, poufy skirts, cute shift dresses, caplets, chunky cable-knit cardigans and embellished tops paired with skinny pants, which would appeal to the likes of the Fanning sisters, Chloe Moretz and even Alexa Chung.

‘Ladies who lunch’ were treated to metallic tweed suits, cashmere turtlenecks, jacquard knit skirt suits and tweed sheath dresses.

For the red carpet, the gowns ranged from slinky crushed, pleated velvet and beaded column gowns to fairytale-like tulle draped gowns. These frothy creates also on my wish list for Oscar night and any other night. which both have a place on Oscar, and any night.

Key accessories included glittered ankle boots, bow-tie sandals, booties and teardrop-shaped pearl earrings.

Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2012 presentation took place yesterday afternoon in New York City.

Easy separates were combined with combat boots for a grungy schoolgirl-inspired look on a colour palette of blue, black, grey, chestnut, gold and red.

Cute pleated skirts were teamed with blouses and jacquard culottes paired with a Peter Pan collared shirt.

Other mash-ups included plaid pants with a gold lurex sweater and flannel pants with a striped sweater.

Bouclé coats, fur-trimmed anoraks, full-skirted dresses with metallic finishes, floral prints, plaid and velvet made up this collection of wearable pieces with a military references and a punkish edge.

Key accessories included wristlets, studded top-handle bags, clutches and totes, plus miltary-style drum hats.

Inspired by Mughal Paisley and Hindu Tilakas, Naeem Khan’s Fall 2012 presented many gowns which must be Oscar bound.

Models sparkled from head to toe wearing gold and silver ethnic embroidered gowns and gowns with bead work which looked heavy.

On the flip side, the designer presented a selection of organza abstract print gowns and dresses which were lighter than air as they floated down the runway.

Necklines plunged, thighs were revealed via splits and backs were open for those who wanted to show off more skin.

For those who don’t, luxe embroidered evening coats or sparkling caftans will enable you to make a statement just as bold without showing off too much skin.

Tweed metallic jackets, beaded gowns with fringe detailing, gowns with feathered skirts and studded pants which were to die for made up this eye-popping collection which sparkled so brightly against the black backdrop.

Marc Jacobs and milliner Stephen Jones brought Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter to life with an oversized floppy hat worn by the models during his Fall 2012 fairytale-themed runway show on Monday evening.

It wasn’t just the hats that were oversized; coats, jackets, skirts and scarves, held together with large safety pins, all got the same ‘bigger is better’ treatment.

These pieces would make for very cosy winter attire.

It’s no wonder that everything was so oversized because there was a lot of layering. One look had a shrug over a jacket, over a dress with cropped pants.

The colour palette ranged from moody hues of black, forest green, violet and navy, to bubbly pastel pinks.

Textures were rich and patterns ranged from jacquard and brocade to paisley and floral.

Key accessories included chunky shoes with big embellished buckles paired with shimmering socks and oversized top handle bags in ostrich or lacquered leather.

Which pieces will we see on the red carpet?

Well, if you strip down the layering there were many cute embellished and shimmering dresses that I’m sure we will see on front-row attendee Dakota Fanning, or we will see commercial versions of these looks on the red carpet.

Helena Bonham Carter is probably the only person who could pull off all of these looks as presented – hats included.

Look 40, the hologram sequined dress with the rosette details around the neckline, is the most red carpet ready look of this collection.

Who wants to place a bet that Anna Dello Russo will wear one of these hats before fashion week (month) ends in March?

Reem Acra‘s Fall 2012 collection was inspired by feminine power.

Cue second-skin leather dresses, beaded mini dresses and sexy gowns with illusion panels which made the looks appear to have extreme cut-outs.

We also saw beaded boleros, metallic tweed jackets, pencil skirts, knee-length dresses that clung to the body, plus office-appropriate day-time sheath dresses.
