Mary Katrantzou Fall 2012

For Fall 2012, Mary Katrantzou was inspired by everyday items: wrist watches, coat hangers, typewriter keyboards, spoons, and most notably No.2 HB pencils.

You may have had to do a double take, but these are items which make up her vibrant prints for the season.

The most impressive thing about the pencils is that they were embroidered and shaped onto the skirt rather than being a print. I would imagine it would be difficult to sit in, and therefore, when this look goes into production, I’m sure it will be a print.

Mary gave us architectural shapes on a colour palette of canary yellow, emerald green, ruby red and ocean blue, alongside light chiffon pieces with floaty ruffled skirts.

I don’t recall Mary presenting knits in the past, so as someone who loves a sweater dress, I was excited to see these pieces presented with large turtle necks.

Funnel neck coats, beaded pants, off-the-shoulder sculptural tops, capes, ruffle-neck long-sleeve dresses and a long-sleeve gown were presented.

With more and more celebs falling in love with Mary Katrantzou, I’m sure we will be seeing these pieces on the red carpet soon.

I just hope they pair the looks with the gorgeous coloured Christian Louboutin pumps and ankle boots we saw at the show.

McQ Fall 2012

Despite being launched in 2006, this was McQ’s first runway show for Fall 2012 which was held during London Fashion Week on Monday evening.

McQueen’s baby sister had a total revamp for Fall. You could say she’s grown up, as the design team was recently brought in-house under the helm of McQueen’s creative director, Sarah Burton. And it showed.

The sporty street wear and cutesy mini dress we’ve seen on Emma Watson were nowhere to be seen.

With the runway covered in fallen leaves, models stormed – and I mean stormed – the runway wearing military coats with oversized pocket flaps in the highly dramatic show.

We also saw tartan dresses with gothic black-lace sleeves, rich blood-velvet mini dresses with embroidered details, coats worn with leather belts, knit dresses, leather coats with furry sleeves, strapless tulle dresses and coats with velvet leaf-print overlay, and a surprising twist came via the colour tu-tu dresses which stood out against the mostly military-green, blood-red and black colour palette.

Kristen McMenamy closed the show wearing a white tulle gown with leaves embroidered all over it.

During the dramatic finale the room fell dark with a spotlight focus on the model. She looked to the heavens as leaves fell on top of her.

Osman Fall 2012

Osman’s minimalist Fall 2012 collection consisted mostly of a rich floral metallic brocade which was to be found on collars, cuffs, pants, capes and strapless dresses.

I loved how the designer was very playful with the floral brocade by mixing it with other prints, which worked.

On a colour palette of lime green, red and black we saw fur-accented jackets, cigarette pants, full-length coats plus day and evening dresses.

I loved the rise-and-fall cut of the skirts and dresses which the designer lined with a contrasting colour or a more floral brocade.

Models stormed the runway wearing Lemaresca for Osman lace-up boots and mules which also got the brocade treatment.

Burberry Prorsum Fall 2012

I also attended my first Burberry Prorsum show during Fall 2012 London Fashion Week yesterday.

It is, as you can imagine, the biggest show seen in London both in size and in production value.

The front row was packed with stars from all over the globe who joined us in celebrating this great British brand.

Models took to the runway wearing trench coats, cropped quilted coats, and tweed, fur-accented and wool coats in several different colours. These looks were kept fresh with bow-front ruched belts which accented the waist of nearly every look.

We also saw skirts which either had a swirled panel draped across the front, a peplum detail, or they were fluted in rich textures such as velvet and wool. Tee-shirts with owl motifs, white oversized shirts and fringed looks closed the show.

I loved the accessories, which ranged from studded leather gloves, which everyone tweeted about after the show, tweed baker boy hats, python gloves, quilted clutches adorned with a gold fox or owl heads, lace-up ankle boots, and large totes.

The show ended with a loud rumble of thunder and a crash of lightning inside the venue. As we looked at each other worriedly, a downpour of heavy showers started running down the outside of the greenhouse-styled venue, much to our relief, and we all burst into laughter – even Anna Wintour cracked a rare smile.

Cue models taking to the runway for the finale, carrying umbrellas, and shimmering gold confetti falling to the ground like rain.

Erdem Fall 2012

Yesterday I attended my first-ever Erdem show, and the experience was just as magical as I had imagined, with power editors Franca Sozzani and Anna Wintour seated directly in front of me.

Erdem’s celebrity fans and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge will be delighted to see that the designers served up ladylike dresses with signature floral prints and plenty of lace.

The florals were more graphic and therefore more vibrant than ever, which will make them stand out more on the red carpet.

Amongst the floral and lace were fit-for-a-Princess tweed pieces and splatter prints.

Laser-cut leather appliqué gave an edge to the pretty pieces and Erickson Beamon for Swaroski Elements added that extra sparkle.

Whilst there was only one gown, there were still many red-carpet options within this collection.

Marc Trinder at Charles Worthington created the models’ super-chic centre-parted buns whilst Andrew Gallimore used MAC cosmetics to apply the wing tips.

Models walked the runway with a collection of Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem pumps and ankle boots in prints from the runway looks.

Nicholas Kirkwood is one of the designers who will be part of this year’s British Designers Collective at Bicester Village.

Christopher Kane Fall 2012

Christopher Kane’s Fall 2012 show was the hottest ticket in town yesterday.

The front row packed with both celebrities and editors highlighted just how important the designer is to London Fashion Week.

For Fall, Christopher went goth on a colour palette of black, dark purple, blue and red, opening with grey pinstripe looks.

Aside from a few tapered pants, this collection was mostly made up of knee-length halter, plunging, sleeveless dresses alongside super-cosy turtleneck knits, blazers, furry coats, tees with leather sleeves, pencil skirts and a red knee-length puffer jacket which I love.

Whilst the mood was dark, the details were very exciting.

There were cut-outs, leopard spots, wood-like prints, embroidered flowers, neck-craning floral embroidery, sweaters threaded with wire, which looked like those long red sweets you get at the counter of a newsagent, and leather piping around the neckline, sleeves and hemlines to give everything an edge.

The shoes were chunky as the models walked the runway with barely any makeup and centre-parted hair swept behind their ears.

Front Row: Alexandra Roach, Alexa Chung, Yasmin Le Bon, Laura Bailey, Samantha Cameron, Poppy Delavigne and Caroline Sieber

Antonio Berardi Fall 2012

Celebrities favourite, Antonio Berardi, showcased his Fall 2012 collection at Senate House during London Fashion Week yesterday morning.

Known for his signature form-fitting dresses loved by the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Rihanna, Zoe Saldana and Nicole Richie, the designer produced a collection we will most definitely see on the red carpet very soon.

If I had to sum up this collection in one word it would be ‘peplums’. They narrowed the waist of nearly every look.

Berardi’s daywear consisted of slick suits with sharp-shoulders, oversized coats; some with fur trims, fit-and-flare dresses – a style favoured by Kristin Davis – fitted dresses and sexy separates on a colour palette of black, silver, red, pink, teal blue and white. Some solid, others two-tone.

Berardi is one of the few designers whose day and eveningwear are loved by celebrities in equal amounts.

Models bravely navigated a flight of stairs in 6 inch Manolo Blahnik for Antonio Berardi heels before taking to the runway wearing fitted floor-length gowns.

The standout look was the fully sequined silver strapless gown followed by the ivory embroidered gown. We also saw embellished mini dresses with peplums to give them an edge.

The models were given Lisbeth-Salander-style haircuts by Orlando Pita whilst Gucci Westman kept the look clean with glossy lips and wet-look eyes.

Jonathan Saunders Fall 2012

High up on the nineteenth floor of Broadgate Tower yesterday evening, overlooking London as the sun was setting, was the beautiful location for the Jonathan Saunders Fall 2012 presentation.

I love each piece from look one to 41. Why?

Clashing prints, bold colours and an array of Fall 2012 Christian Louboutin heels.

I love how a gingham skirt was paired with a striped sweater and a floral embroidered skirt. On paper that may sound overwhelming, but in reality, it was beautiful.

We saw many tailored jackets, high-collared crisp white shirts, cigarette pants with zipper details going up the sides, A-line skirts, ombre sweaters, tea-dresses and fitted coats.

Models’ sported dressage ponytails styled with a thick black ribbon.

Key accessories apart from the Loubies included sun visors to add a sporty feel to the collection.

Whilst we didn’t see any red carpet gowns in this collection, there any many options for the chic and beautiful for TV appearances, photocalls and indie events like the Independent Spirit Awards and Sundance Film Festival.

Jonathan Saunders is just one of many talented designers due to launch at the British Designers Collective boutique which will open soon at Bicester Village.

More news on this to follow.

Topshop Unique Fall 2012

The next stop on my Sunday afternoon London Fashion Week trail was the Old Billingsgate Market where the Topshop Unique show was held.

Before the show they invited us to drinks and canapés and gave us a chance to shop limited edition t-shirts from the NEWGEN recipients from the last ten years.

Despite being a shopaholic, I managed to limit myself to a Mary Katrantzou and Marios Schwab for Topshop tee, but many more from Erdem, Christopher Kane and J W Anderson were available to purchase, with all profits going to Centrepoint, a charity dedicated to giving young homeless people a future.

For Fall 2012, Topshop Unique’s new head designer, Emma Farrow, served up tough military-inspired pieces that we will be clambering over each other to purchase this September.

Whilst some of us won’t have the tummies (or bravery) for the cropped tops, or the legs for the hot pants, we can all still get on board with the chunky knits, velvet jumpsuits, floor-length olive-green trench coats with military-style gold buttons, low-slung skirts, leather pleated skirts and sweater dresses.

Models stomped the runway wearing lace-up army-style boots and carrying an array of slouchy leather bags.
