Red Carpet Fashion Awards

There is no better red carpet to rock a floral Balmain dress than at the Independent Spirit Awards, and there is no better person to rock that dress than Zoe Saldana.

The actress kindly demonstrated just how it’s done at this year’s ceremony, held in Santa Monica, California this evening.

Zoe opted for this sweet, colourful print Balmain Spring 2012 mini dress which features structured shoulders, a metallic gold print and a jagged edged open back for an unexpected touch.

Nude Brian Atwood peep-toes elongate Zoe’s legs and perfectly complement the dress, but at this point nude pumps are starting to go the same way as the black pumps…unimaginative and uninspiring.

Nonetheless Zoe, as always, is perfection here and I’m glad she didn’t opt for the belt.

Back in August, Zoe Saldana wore this gorgeous Balmain Resort 2012 dress to the ‘Colombiana’ Miami premiere, but we were on the fence about the additional train.

The dress is so hot and sexy on its own that we wished she’d opted for the lookbook version.

Well, in the space of twenty days, two Victoria’s Secret models have worn this gold-embellished Balmain mini dress as it was presented.

Joan Smalls wore it to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show after-party at Dream Downtown in New York City earlier this month.

She teamed her dress with silver Alexander Wang Fall 2011 accessories including an Adriel clutch and Fabiana metallic leather sandals.

Usually mixing metals sends a shiver down my spine, but there are enough silver elements in her dress to make this combo work.

Alessandra Ambrosio wore the same dress to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show viewing party which took place in New York City last night.

She accessorized with tame nude slingbacks and a tan Valentino clutch.

Joan wins for me.

Her accessories are far more interesting. Zoe lost points for the train and black sandals, whilst Alessandra lost major points for her uninspiring accessories.

Gemma Arterton attended the 57th Evening Standard Awards at the Savoy Hotel in London last night.

She donned a chic all black ensemble with a touch of bedazzlement.

The former Bond girl wore a black Viktor & Rolf Fall 2011 tuxedo jacket with satin lapels which she paired with a Balmain Spring 2012 embellished top.

At a press day in London last week I was fortunate enough to see the Balmain Spring 2012 collection up close. The embellishments actually look like an upside down Christmas trees.

A matching Balmain clutch, skin-tight leather pants and Christian Louboutin ‘Pigalle’ pumps completed her look.

I love the wild tresses and smoky eyes as it works very well with her rock chick look.

Kate Moss would be proud.

Leighton Meester joined her co-stars at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City last night to help celebrate ‘Gossip Girl’s’ 100th episode.

The actress wore a Balmain ecru strapless mini dress.

Usually I’m a huge fan of Leighton’s style, but on this occasion I’m failing raise a smile for this look.

The dress is sitting a little too low plus it looks too tight on the bust.

I wish this dress had been a straight-forward babydoll dress with the removal of that middle panel and clasp.

The Jimmy Choo ‘Lauren’ sandals thankfully solidify her status as having one of the best shoes collections of any celebrity to hit the red carpet.

It wasn’t only my first Balmain presentation; it was new head designer Olivier Rousteing’s too.

The (rather cute) designer didn’t take the Parisian fashion house too far away from its rock n’ roll roots for this Spring 2012 collection, much to the relief of Kate Moss, Rihanna and Alex Gerrard.

We saw plenty of gold-studded, fringed and embellished details on leather jackets, second-skin mini dresses, tops and short leather skirts.

These looks were presented on a colour palette of black, light-wash denim, ice white, silver and gold.

The main focus points were the lightweight denim and leather maxi skirts, the delightfully sinful hot pants, the high waistlines and the wide belts with large gold buckles.

Aside from the celebrity red carpet looks and party pieces, there were plenty of everyday wearable looks within this collection like the ice blue sweaters, white jeans (hello Liz Hurley), denim shirts, slouchy leather pants and white blouses.

Models sported high ponytails and barely-there makeup.

Key accessories included gold cuffs, open-toe ankle boots and gold embellished ankle boots.

Favourites: Gold accented denim jacket and pants and the gold embellished leather jacket

Who I See Wearing This Collection: Cameron Diaz, Celine Dion, Zoe Saldana, Ciara, Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, Saoirse Ronan, Halle Berry, Daisy Lowe, Diane Kruger, Fergie, Noomi Rapace, Lake Bell, Rose Byrne, Sonam Kapoor, Zoe Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie

Paula Abdul attended the “The X-Factor” World Premiere which was held at the ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome in Hollywood on Wednesday.

The judge wore a Balmain Fall 2011 dress for the big night.

Her navy, silver and gold sequinned-striped mini dress features bold shoulders.

Paula accessorized with a navy YSL clutch, gold necklaces and gold earrings.

She completed her look with gold spiked Ruthie Davis peep-toe heels which look like Louboutin’s because of the red sole.

This is a great look for Paula, but with all that sparkle she didn’t need the gold necklaces.
