Taraji P. Henson In Giambattista Valli Couture – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Taraji P. Henson had a light new outlook at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

Using the more casual event as an opportunity to give her sultry diva side a rest in exchange for a more frivolously darling mood, she wore a Giambattista Valli Spring 2017 Couture high-low frock.

The floral and lace design was imbued with girly femininity, so that led me to question the heels. The rose-gold tone was on point, but the chunky Jimmy Choo ‘New April’ platforms, not so much.

I wouldn’t have immediately pegged this look for Taraji, as I would have more closely placed it for someone the likes of Kiernan Shipka. But I did appreciate her stepping outside the box with a fresh perspective that was likewise echoed in her pastel makeup and wavy bob.

Janelle Monáe In Salvatore Ferragamo – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Janelle Monáe cut a visually arresting profile at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

She has been flirting back and forth with colour, but here she returned to her signature black-and-white theme polished off with her red lip.

Her style obsession with clashing patterns, including checkerboard and stripes, played a starring role in this Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2016 ensemble that merged together a coat and dress, all styled with a similarly geometric Emm Kuo ‘Gehry’ clutch.

Even with the cacophony of loud and proud patterns, her ivory beaded shoes constantly drew my attention to her feet—and, yes, her pedicure featured a black-and-white printed motif, as she’s not one to do anything halfway.

That said, the Christian Louboutin ‘Tudor Bal’ sandals looked like they belonged to an entirely different outfit. What do you make of them?

Freida Pinto In Uel Camilo – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Freida Pinoto attended the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

My first reaction to her look was, “this ain’t your style”.

The yellow hue of this Uel Camilo lace gown is gorgeous on Freida, but I can’t help but feel disappointed she went down the much worn “sheer gown” path.

At this stage of awards season I like to be wowed, not fatigued.

Nicholas Kirkwood ‘Penelope’ pearl sandals, an Edie Parker ‘Jean’ clutch and Harry Kotlar canary diamonds earrings completed her look.

Kate Beckinsale In Pamella Roland – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Kate Beckinsale attended the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

Her Pamella Roland Fall 2017 ensemble was much like the perky ponytail she favours, mixing both fun and formality with the lightheartedness of the sequined, feathered bodice and the sophistication of the black pencil skirt.

I love that her styling included a prismatic clutch that further ensured the look didn’t take itself too seriously.

The skirt could have been shortened, if we were to nitpick, but the sassy refinement held strong, regardless.

Kiersey Clemons In Prabal Gurung – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Kiersey Clemons attended the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

Sheer got a new lease on life with this Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2017 halter dress that delivered breezy, laid-back sophistication—perfect for the Spirit Awards.

The femininity of the floral print and frill was rightfully tempered by the black-and-white colour palette.

But it was the vibrant pop of that fiery orange-red lip that really took the look to the next level.

Ruth Negga In Delpozo – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Ruth Negga also had an early entrance at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

The actress, nominated for her work in ‘Loving,’ had me charmed at first sight with her Delpozo Fall 2017 frock.

Minus the more directional hood from the runway, the tea-length dress was a sweet symphony between the architectural, bow-shaped bodice and the hothouse of colour that exploded throughout the floral brocade skirt.

While she kept her footwear to a plain black pump, I’m glad she took advantage of the brighter hues with her magenta Roger Vivier ‘Pilgrim Jewel Papillon de Nuit’ clutch and sapphire eye makeup—which actually proved that blue shadow can be worn well.

Naomie Harris In Chanel – 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Naomie Harris was the first to arrive on the red carpet for the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards today (February 25) in Santa Monica, California.

Traditional texture meets classic silhouette in this Chanel Spring 2017 dress; that’s until you get to the hot-pink Velcro accents which shifts this shift dress into another gear.

The shoes on anyone else may have given a pass, but this is Naomie Harris, so I would’ve loved shoes in a hot-pink or cool blue hue.
