Menswear Red Carpet Roundup

There were so many great menswear looks to take the red-carpet stage over the weekend.

Caleb McLaughlin: At the ripe age of 16, this ‘Stranger Things’ star is showing his incredible flair for style in this 3.1 Phillip Lim paint-splattered ensemble at the 2017 American Music Awards on Sunday (November 19) in LA. I love how he fully committed to the look, right down to the shoes—and that this is both youthful and fashion-forward at the same time.

Harry Styles: At the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on Monday (November 20) in Shanghai, China, Harry did what he does best combining retro and modern style influences in this Givenchy Spring 2018 mint suit and matching silk shirt paired with Givenchy boots.

Machine Gun Kelly: This Comme des Garçons ensemble took the abstract, paint-splattered effect to even greater lengths at the American Music Awards. But, despite the exaggerated elements, the effect came off as directionally cool rather than comical.

Menswear Red Carpet Roundup

From awards galas to premieres and more, there were plenty of occasions for the men to be out in force on the red carpet. Here’s a look at the men who have been front and centre.

Justin Timberlake: Proving that the velvet trend isn’t just for the ladies, Justin cut a thoroughly suave profile in this dark-green velvet Tom Ford tuxedo at the 9th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday (November 11) in Hollywood. I love this luxe twist on the classic tux.

Jason Momoa: Although his styling may have been more in the manner of edgy-bohemian, Jason’s custom Valentino tuxedo was quite smooth and polished at the ‘Justice League’ LA premiere on Monday (November 13).

Jared Leto: It’s Jared Leto and it’s an MTV event, so it’s only natural that he would go sartorially wild at the 2017 MTV EMAs on Sunday (November 12) in London with his latest Gucci endeavor—a Fall 2017 look that was even more subversively rebellious than the runway presentation. The colour discord between the lavender, bubblegum, and red track pants made me want to shield my eyes—and we haven’t even gotten to the tidy-whitey sneakers.

Gucci @ 2017 LACMA Art + Film Gala

As the 2017 LACMA Art + Film Gala in LA on Saturday (November 4) was presented by Gucci, there were quite a number of Gucci looks in attendance from the label’s devoted darlings.

Dakota Johnson: You might recognize this Gucci Spring 2018 embellished, plisse gown from the Red Carpet Wish List for Mandy Moore. Yet, its languid, boudoir glamour was actually in keeping with Dakota’s style, too. I know some may qualify the swoop of her hairstyle as a bit mature, and I wouldn’t disagree. However, I did like the drama brought forth from her long earrings and oxblood lip.

Zoe Saldana: I think Zoe may be the only one who could wear this Gucci gown and not make me want to immediately rip off the giant pink rose corsages from the flamenco, caped shoulders.

Jared Leto In Gucci – Blade Runner 2049 Mexico Photocall

As Jared Leto has worn Gucci his last three times out this month, I was pretty certain the trend might continue at the recent ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Mexico photocall. And it did.

Florals again permeated his latest Gucci look, as he borrowed from the girls with this top that riffed on the PJs trend.

Given his tendency to go to sartorial extremes, I was a bit surprised he didn’t wear the floral pants, too, instead opting for red track pants.

Barring the neon-orange-accented sneakers, which were a bit clunky with the look, this was actually a more casually subdued offering from Jared—even if it could look as if he’s half-dressed for bed and for the gym.

Jared Leto In Gucci – BoF 500 Gala

Another day, another over-the-top pattern (or five) for Jared Leto, as he brought his zany sartorial show to the BoF 500 Gala on Saturday (September 9) in New York City, where Selena Gomez was also in attendance.

This ensemble marks the third Gucci Fall 2017 look he’s worn in practically as many days, with equally loud choices at the GQ Men of the Year Awards and Harpers BAZAAR Celebrates ‘ICONS By Carine Roitfeld.’

Maybe I’m building up a tolerance to his wacky plaids and graphic prints, but this third retro-facing look struck me as a bit less comical than his prior two overloaded style antics.

Regardless, if you’re going to flaunt such a bold statement, at least make sure the pants are properly tailored. The silliest part of this look was the pants dragging the ground.
