Haley Bennett In Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda Couture – 2017 Met Gala

While we may have called out many a star for not exactly embracing the 2017 Met Gala’s avant-garde theme in honour of designer Rei Kawakubo, Haley Bennett will not be part of the guilty party judging by her look of the evening.

As she took to the red carpet on Monday (May 1) in New York City, she brought nothing short of an eccentric flower shop in tow.

Not content to only have an array of blooms embellished across her Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda Couture period-style, lace gown, she wore an entire bouquet of faux florals atop her head.

While I want to applaud her for taking a bold fashion risk, there were several elements that were working against her thematic efforts.

The garish makeup being one; and her curled locks that had an ageing effect, being another. I probably would have lopped off the loose doily sleeves, too, to help restore the youthfulness to the look.

Kate Hudson & Naomi Watts In Stella McCartney – 2017 Met Gala

Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts were the yin and yang of the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1) in New York City.

Both dressed in Stella McCartney, they certainly took the prize for minimalist-chic, cool-girl looks of the night.

Kate Hudson: Her asymmetric white gown captured my affection for its sleek silhouette juxtaposed against the robe-like sleeve. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but it fit her like a dream and her powdered, platinum updo added just the right thematic finish.

Naomi Watts: She played the sophisticated-sultry siren in this mesh-laced black gown, styled with an on-trend wavy bob for a girl-meets-glam statement—with an edge.

Blake Lively In Atelier Versace – 2017 Met Gala

Blake Lively was another of the evening’s guests at the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1) in New York City.

King Midas would find nothing to fault about her gilded Atelier Versace gown, which erupted at the bottom in a sea of feathery blue plumes.

It’s not the first time she’s worn feathers at the Met Gala, as in 2013, she also brought in some serious plumage.

But, aside from that, I feel like we’ve seen incarnations of this look before. Beyonce and Kim Kardashian are just two who come to mind who’ve worn bird-inspired gowns in the past.

Perhaps I’m having some feather fatigue, even though I wanted to love this body-contouring, liquid gold moment on Blake. Did it maintain its lustrous shine for you?

Kerry Washington In Michael Kors – 2017 Met Gala

Kerry Washington attended the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1) in New York City.

Putting the punk in patchwork, this Michael Kors quilt of many metallics had edge, elegance, and effortlessness all sewn into one gown.

Plus, with her bluntly cropped wig paying homage to Rei Kawakubo, Kerry carried through the theme from head to toe. Bravo.

Jessica Chastain In Prada – 2017 Met Gala

Before taking her seat at the judges table alongside Fan Bingbing for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival in 15 days time, Jessica Chastain bestowed her regal charm on the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1).

Part of the Prada posse, the actress donned a pale yellow chiffon plissé off-the-shoulder Elizabethan-style gown embellished with crystal embroidery.

It’s rare that I love two Prada gowns in a row, but this is such a beautifully romantic gown that it left me in awe.

Was this one of your favourites of the night?

Maggie Gyllenhaal & Sofia Boutella In Marni – 2017 Met Gala

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sofia Boutella were both in attendance at the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1) in New York City.

Twinning in their own unique way, they each showed off different sides of hyper-embellished Marni creations.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: If I were to pick a favourite, it would be Maggie’s paneled jumpsuit for its delicious vibrancy of candy colours and its bright blue, chain-link-style back, not to mention her bold cherry-red lip.

Sofia Boutella: In comparison, Sofia’s version of oversized, copper-flecked chainmail fell ironically flat yet also overdone, with a few too many necklaces and bangles for its own good.

Which did you prefer?

Janelle Monae In Ralph & Russo Couture – 2017 Met Gala

It was standard style protocol for Janelle Monae at the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1) in New York City.

Not missing a beat from her signature black-and-white colour palette, she donned a Ralph & Russo Couture confection that had her floating across the blue carpet in a cloud-like pouf of tulle.

A neck piece of feathers assured the imaginative look took flight, as well.

Styled with finger cuffs as well as Janelle’s go-to hair jewelry, the gown was nothing out of the ordinary for her. But, if it isn’t broke…

Lupita Nyong’o In Prada – 2017 Met Gala

It’s been a while since we saw Lupita Nyong’o on the red carpet, but judging by her Prada gown worn to the 2017 Met Gala on Monday (May 1), it would appear she hasn’t lost that magic touch.

I was very excited not only by the bright coral hue, but also by the organza flowers across the neckline which cascaded down the back adding plenty of flare.

Colour has always been the foundation of Lupita’s style, so if you don’t witness it in the dress, you’re bound to catch some colour in her makeup.

Was the rainbow eye shadow a step too far, or are you loving the creativity of the look?
