The dark, vampy lip was out in full force at the Met Costume Institute Gala in New York City last week.

Dark, rich, wine-stained lips were sported by Kate Bosworth, Jessica Alba , Lana del Rey and Camilla Belle proving that the goth-inspired, Rooney Mara effect is going to be hanging around a little while longer. But Pat McGrath, the make-up artist on ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ film, has toned down the severity for this season making it a bit more wearable. She sent statement lips down the runways at the YSL, Gucci and Nina Ricci Fall 2012 shows and explained the look as: “A little bit Dante Gabriel Rosetti…It’s all about the bleached eyebrows and slightly paled-out skin with a dark lip—it’s ethereal, but dark and strong.”

To achieve the perfect dark lip McGrath recommends layering lipliner and lipstick over concealer. Using a cover-up will erase your natural lip hue and create a blank canvas for the perfect stand-out lip. “Brush a light layer of concealer over lip balm, blending with your finger, then line and color in the lips with a lipliner,” says McGrath. “Next, apply your shade of choice, blot with tissue, dust with a light bit of translucent powder, and add a second layer of lipstick for superior, longwearing coverage.” For full-on glamour, McGrath suggests pumping up shine with a touch of clear gloss.

Flawless skin is the starting point for this bold look. Make Up For Ever HD Invisible cover foundation will provide a smooth, even canvas and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer should mask any dark spots or redness. Keep the cheeks bare and eyes simple. If you have fine brows and you’re feeling a bit edgy, give them little dust with some translucent powder, MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder should do the trick, the rest should follow Bosworth’s lead and go for a gorgeously groomed full brow.

After prepping lips, start colouring in. Plummy Clinique Quickliner for lips 07 is the perfect match for any dark, wine coloured lipstick but Lipstick Queen Silicone Invisible Liner is a fool-proof option for those with a problem staying inside the lines. Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color in Black Orchid, Lipstick Queen Sinner in Wine and 17 Lasting Fix Lipstick in New Black are all perfectly vampish shades. Finish off with a slick of DuWop Lip Venom 2nd Sin – a clear gloss that will not only add shine but also plumps the lips.

I would imagine being a makeup artist for a young actress is a difficult job, as your challenge is always to ensure the star looks her age.

Elle Leary, makeup artist to ‘Mad Men’ actress Kiernan Shipka, shares how she gives the young actress a flawless glow.

“When we sit down with Kiernan and her mom to figure out her look for an event it is a process that takes into account her amazing fashion sense and individual flair. With her makeup it is a fine line to keep her looking age-appropriate but still honor her sense of style.

I make sure to keep her skin dewy, glowing, and youthful by moisturizing with Arbonne oil-absorbing lotion. This is a vegan, organic, paraban-free product. I try to use these types of products on her since she is so young.

I use a full-coverage foundation but sheer it out a little with moisturizer so we can see her beautiful snow-white complexion.

I love to draw attention to her amazing cheeks by swirling a little Harvana by Benefit on the apples. Perfect blend of pinks, peaches and a highlighter.

Sweep a variety of eye-shadows on her lids of taupes, browns, coppers, pinks, and mauves. I stay away from eye-liner and just finish off with two coats of mascara. I apply mascara with a medal eye-lash comb to give her the most natural and separated lashes.

Lastly we love to play up her lips; Kiernan loves pinks and nudes.

Most of the time I stick with a tint or stain to let her natural colour come through, but other times when we are trying to pump it up a little, I use a creamy lip pencil to colour in the whole lip.

I often use Peche by Chanel with a little gloss in Mica just in the centre of her lip.

Finish with a little dusting of a translucent powder in the T-zone and you are done.”

Cheryl Cole is really branching out.

In addition to serving as a spokesmodel for L’Oreal Paris, the gorgeous Girls Aloud singer has recently collaborated with the beauty brand to launch her very own lipstick—Cheryl Cole Limited Edition L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Red Passion (available at British drugstores nationwide for £8.19; £1 of every sale will be donated to The Cheryl Cole Foundation to benefit The Prince’s Trust.)

“I chose this iconic luxurious, red shade as it is the perfect dramatic accessory,” says Cole in a statement. “When selecting the shade I chose one I felt would flatter most hair and skin types, and is the red that everyone wants in their make-up bag.”

We actually agree—brick red is the one hue that works on virtually every complexion, which is extremely rare. Think you’ll give it a go? —India-Jewel Jackson

Rhetorical question coming—how gorgeous did Angelina Jolie look at the Golden Globes?

That cream Atelier Versace gown fit her like a dream, and the red lapel paired with a complementary clutch made for a perfect accent, along with a standout candy apple lip.

We’re not entirely sure what product her makeup artist used to achieve this look, but after years of testing virtually every red lippie on the market, we can tell you this—one swipe of Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 01 Always Red ($12 at Sephora.com) will give you the exact same look. —India-Jewel Jackson

Inspiration:
Angela created this classic beauty look on Michelle Williams, stating “my inspiration was a gorgeous Golden Globe winner!!”

How-To:
Angela started the makeup application with cleaning the skin with CHANEL Lotion Douceur Gentle Hydrating Toner using a sponge instead of cotton. She then applied a thin layer of CHANEL Ultra Correction Lift Intensive Lifting Concentrate on her face, Angels Makeup Collagen Treatment under her eyes, and placed CHANEL Sublimage La Creme Texture Supreme on her cheeks and neck.

For this red carpet makeup look Angela applied CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup SPF 15 in Beige-Pastel on the face and eye lids, as a base. On the eyes, she used the grey shadow shades from the CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Smoky Eyes to create a light smoky effect on the upper lid, then adding CHANEL Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Black Shimmer to the top lash. Angela then defined the brows with CHANEL Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Blond Clair and added two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir on the top and bottom lashes. On Michelle’s cheeks she applied CHANEL Powder Blush in Rose Ecrin that gave a perfect flush, and completed the look with CHANEL Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour in Perle.
