Get The Look: Lupita Nyong’o’s SAG Awards Makeup

20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - ArrivalsIf anyone doesn’t believe that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the one to watch’ on the red carpet this award season, they haven’t been paying attention to the stunning fashion and beauty choices the newcomer has been making in the past few weeks. At the SAG Awards on Saturday night, it was no exception. Lupita’s stunning Gucci gown was a real attention-grabber, and her makeup was just as striking.

Lupita’s makeup artist, Nick Barose, explains that her makeup was inspired by Lupita’s gown–”the flowers across Lupita’s chest inspired me to do something with her eyes that reminded me of butterflies on flowers” but “to keep the look from being too matchy-matchy, I kept the blue eyeshadow only in the inner corners of the eyes, and then mixed in two other colours, purple and yellow, to mimic butterfly wings. Lupita can carry colour like no one else.”

To start things off, Nick massaged Chanel Sublimage L’Essence Essential Revitalizing Concentrate and Chanel Sublimage La Crème Yeux into Lupita’s skin, let it sit for five minutes, and then blotted it off with tissue, so it left behind just enough moisture for a perfect canvas.

Then, since her eyes were going to be so colourful, Nick didn’t want Lupita to look like she was wearing blush, so he dusted Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Emotion onto the apples of her cheeks to add dimension. Next, he applied Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour on to her T-zone, under her eyes, onto the bridge of her nose and along her chin to brighten up her face.

For the statement-making eyes, Nick used the bright turquoise shade (top left) from the Chanel Les 4 Ombre Quadra Eye Shadow in Fascination from the inner corner of Lupita’s eyes to the center, and then applied Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Amethyst from the outer corners toward the center, but did not let the two colours meet.

Then he used Chanel Limited Edition Le Crayon Khôl Intense Eye Pencil in Pêche Cuivré in the center of the eyes, blending it into the other two colours with his fingers. Next, he took a small shadow brush and combined all the colours together, to make sure you couldn’t see where each colour ended.

Then he took the Pêche Cuivré pencil again and coloured along Lupita’s brow bone and took Chanel Stylo Yeux Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense and lined the lash lines and applied two coats of Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara Multi-Dimensionnel in Noir on the upper lashes only.

To finish the eyes, Nick used Chanel Stylo Yeux Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Violine from the inner corner to the outer corner along the lower lashline, and then topped that off with the same purple shadow he used on the lids.

To make sure the brows looked polished, but not too bold, Nick used Chanel Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Brun Cendré to create a fuller shape, and then went over that with a bronze eye shadow to tone the colour down.

Finally, for her lips, Nick shares, “We did break the beauty rule of ‘if you do dramatic eyes, don’t do bright lips,’ but this look called for something whimsical, so a neutral lip would have fallen flat.”

First, he used Chanel Rouge Coco Baume Hydration Conditioning Lip Balm and let it sit on the lips to moisturize, before then blotting it off. Then, he traced the edges of the lips with Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Definer in Framboise and then filled them all in, and then blotted it off. Next, he applied Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Passion, which he also blotted off. “To make the lips look like a stain and not too lipstick-y, I just removed the colour as I went,” explains Nick. “That way the colour popped in a gentle way and gave the look a feminine touch.”

Get The Look: Keira Knightley’s Smouldering ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ LA Premiere Makeup

Premiere Of Paramount Pictures' "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" - Red CarpetCelebrity makeup artist Kate Lee created Keira Knightley’s smouldering smudged-eye look for the ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ LA premiere yesterday evening.

Here is how she created Keira’s look.

Considering Keira wore a navy Chanel dress with white details, Kate wanted to keep her looking more of the moment, and so she went for a creamy navy smudged eye.

As Keira had just got off the plane a few hours earlier, Kate prepped the skin with Chanel Hydra Beauty to hydrate and give a great base for a natural-looking complexion. Kate then used Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua 20 Beige to give a nice uniform glow. On the eye she started out by lining the inside of the upper and lower lash lines with Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Marine.

Next she reached for Chanel Illusion d’ Ombre Apparition, which is a beautiful shimmering navy, to melt away the lines and give a soft effect. To finish off the eyes, she curled the lashes and gave them one coat of Chanel Inimitable Noir Mascara.

On the cheeks, for definition and a nude blush she used Chanel le Blush Creme de Chanel Cheeky (Summer 2014 Collection).

To finish, Kate used Chanel Rouge Coco Mademoiselle for a natural blushing lip.

Get The Look: Nieves Alvarez’s Chiseled Cheeks

Vanity Fair 5th Anniversary Party In MadridYou no longer need to do the duck lip pose in your selfies in order to get high cheekbones.

We’ve got the lowdown on how you can recreate the envied jawline of Nieves Alvarez with a few simple tools. The key to achieving a structured look is to enhance the shadows and play up areas where the light naturally hits your face.

Start by choosing a contouring shade that is two shades darker than your complexion.  This will give you the coveted shadow of a high cheekbone. According to Jennifer Jane, Celebrity Makeup Artist who has worked with the Best Dressed International Star, the key to a sleeker jawline is to remember less is more.

Piling on the product and forgetting to properly blend can leave your face looking dirty. So, as Jane says, “Blend, blend, blend until all edges have disappeared.” In addition to blending, the right tools are essential to a sculpted look. Use an angled brush such as the Laura Mercier Angled Cheek Contour Brush to perfect your application.

After you’ve exaggerated the hollowed area, it’s time to highlight. Pick a shade slightly lighter than your normal foundation to brighten the area right above your blush. A radiant product, such as the Illuminator by Nars, will dramatically intensify the reflection of light, making cheeks pop.

Get The Look: Allison Williams’ 2014 Golden Globes Makeup Look

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - ArrivalsAt the Golden Globes, ‘Girls’ star Allison Williams cemented herself as a red carpet favorite. Her unique black-and-white Alexander McQueen gown was flattering and unique, and her makeup was stunning.

Avon’s Global Celebrity Makeup Artist Lauren Anderson created the glam look, and here’s how you can recreate it at home.

On Allison’s face, Lauren applied YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Illuminating Foundation, and then dusted on Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Light. She defined her brows with Votre Vu Arch de Triumphe Brow Definer.

For the eyes, Lauren tightlined the upper and lower lids with Avon Glimmersticks Eye Liner in Blackest Black, and then she played up Allison’s blue eyes by creating a smokey eye with Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Urban Skyline, focusing the white shade (number 1) in the inner corners and the light gray (number 2) on the outer corners.

To finish the dramatic eyes, Lauren coated the lashes with Avon Mega Effects Mascara.

On the apples of Allison’s cheeks, Lauren swiped Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour in Rose Petal, and to complete the look, she used Avon Ultra Color Absolute Lipstick in Ripe Rose (this colour will be available for purchase soon).

Get The Look: Cate Blanchett’s 2014 Golden Globes Romantic Makeup Look

Cate Blanchett's 2014 Golden Globes Romantic Makeup LookCate Blanchett went with classic black with her Armani gown, though her makeup artist, Jeanine Lobell wanted to stay away from the classic red lip when it came to Cate’s pout.

“We didn’t want to do the expected red lip to go with her gorgeous Armani black gown,” says Jeanine. “So we went the softer route. No harsh lines. Instead, I blended colors for dimension.”
Jeanine made what was essentially custom lip color for Cate. She mixed Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in Scarlatto and Boudoir. Her trick? She first applied Scarlatto (a raspberry rose) then applied Boudoir (a nude rose) directly over it.

Cate’s matte, even-toned look all began with prep work. Jeanine prepped Cate’s skin with the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask. Afterwards, she applied the Lancome Translucence Mattifying Silky Press Powder. She layered the Nars Highlighting Blush in Satellite of Love to highlight Cate’s cheekbones, giving her a beautiful flush.

Using the Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Intuition, Jeanine blended the pinky-beige and goldy-beige shades together and dusted them from lid to lash line. She then used the Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Emervielle for a hint of colour to add dimension without the need for liner. Countless coats of Lancome Hypnose Waterproof Custome Volume mascara were used to really make Cate’s lashes pop.

To complete Cate’s look, Jeanine used the Nars Brow Shader and Brow Gel to create a defined, but not-too-harsh brow.

Get The Look: Amber Heard at The Golden Globes

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - ArrivalsA presenter at Sunday’s 2014 Golden Globe Awards, Amber Heard sparked in a midnight blue Atelier Versace gown. While the stunning actress wowed in the elegant frock, it was her romantic up-do and glamorous makeup that made the full exceptionally unique. Celebrity makeup artist Matthew VanLeewen collaborated with Amber to create a look accentuated her flawless features.

“Amber brought some of her own ideas to the mix, says Matthew. “She liked the idea of focusing on sultry chocolate eyes, creamy skin and soft nude lips.”

Here is how to recreate this glamorous look:

Face (complexion): Before priming the skin with Hourglass No.28 Primer Serum, Matthew moisturized Amber’s skin with Cle de Peau’s Gentle Nourishing Emulsion. “No. 28 hydrated beautifully but it also creates a magical finish,” he says. With skin prepped, Matthew concealed with Hourglass Hidden Corrective Conceal in Warm and followed with the Veil Fluid Makeup in Light Beige.

Eyes: The star of the look was Amber’s sultry, brown smoky eyes. To begin, Matthew chose the shell shade from the Hourglass Vol. 6 Eye Palette as a full lid shade (base). He continued to blend a bronze shimmery shade (Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy) into the crease and under the eyes. To intensify the bronze, apply the brown shade from the Vol. 6 palette in the same areas.

For unexpected touch of drama, line the eyes with a plum liner (MAC Eye Kohl in Prunella). “Amber brought some of her own ideas to the mix, says Matthew. “I also smudged the line with the black shadow from the palette,” he says. For added dimension, apply a high-shine pearl shadow to the inner corner of eyes.

Finally, top the eyes off with a coat of Hourglass Film Noir mascara. Allow the initial coat to dry prior to curling lashes. Add an extra layer of fun with individual lashes like Ardell Duralash Flare in Medium Black.

Cheeks: Matthew brought out the beauty of Amber’s face by applying the sheer rose shade from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset to her cheeks. He followed with a sheer champagne highlighter (Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Due in Bronze Light). To mimic a moonlit glow, Matthew recommends going over the initial highlight with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light.

Lips: To wrap the look up, Matthew chose a liner and lipstick combination. Start by lining lips with Hourglass Trace Liner in Bare and follow with a swipe of Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Whisper.

The finally result was a glamorous yet understated look that encapsulated the best of bronze and gold-y tones. Skip the traditional dark smoky eye and try this updated look for you next night out.

Get The Look: Sanda Bullock’s Rosy Spring Beauty Look

Sandra BullockThis past weekend, Sandra Bullock wowed all at the 25th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in a fresh-faced, rosy beauty look that has me itching for spring. Although this bubbly pink combination might feel a little too young, Sandra’s look reads more mature with a subtle smoky eye and sleek hair. Here are some simple tips to achieve this rosy, updated look.

Eyes: Sandra opted for a sultry bronze smoky eye look. To achieve this softly dramatic look, try Lancome’s Color Design 5 Shadow & Liner Palette in Bronze Amour. Apply the medium brown shade from the lash line to the crease, softly blending color onto the lid. The must-have makeup artist tip to open up eyes with color is to place a light shimmery champagne shade around the tear duct, as Sandra did with this look. Pick up the lightest shade in the palette and apply accordingly. Pack a liner brush with the shimmery dark chocolate shade and apply to the top and lower lash line. Finally, coat lashes with the luxurious Smokey Extravagant Mascara by Make Up For Ever. The tapered edge of the wand allows you to coat every lash.

Face: The star of Sandra’s pink beauty look is her masterfully blended rosy blush. Make sure not to pick up a shade that is too pink, as that can be too youthful and out of place. To take the guesswork out of picking, celebrity makeup superstar, Edward Bess has created a blush that mimics a natural flushed look with a touch of color. His Blush Extraordinaire comes in three flattering colors which makes choosing the perfect pink tone effortless. Pack some color on to a fluffy blush brush, pat on your hand to remove the intensity on the brush and softly apply to the apples of your cheek, blending outwards.

Lips: Sandra’s pink lipstick made her lips appear pillow soft. To get this look yourself, try a lipstick in a creamy blend like YSL’s Rouge Voupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick in 9 Caress Pink. The muted pink tone provides the ideal pink shade that compliments this rosy look well.

Will you dare to try this soft spring look?
