Get the Look: Jessica Szohr’s Inky, Smoky Eyes

Premiere Of Twentieth Century Fox's "The Internship" - ArrivalsThere are many different ways to achieve a smoky eye, and one of the most intense is rimming eyes in a black eyeliner, as seen on Jessica Szohr at the premiere of ‘The Internship‘ on Wednesday.

However applying eyeliner on the waterline–the part of your lid right above the lower lashline, and right underneath your upper lashes–can be tricky for the at-home makeup artist, since some liners create too large a line and others run, since the waterline is, in fact, watery!

So we went straight to the pros to find out the best way to line the waterline (also called tightlining).

Makeup artist Nikole Morrow-Pettus says it’s best to use a waterproof, creamy eye pencil and gently pull down on your eye to expose the lower waterline making sure you stop before the tear duct, so you don’t clog it.

For the upper lid, look up, so you can see the upper waterline easier.

And to get the specifics on recreating this look at home, Jessica’s makeup artist Mai Quynh shared how she made Jessica’s eyes smolder:

First, she applied Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Colour Shadow in Caviar along Jessica’s lash line and up to the crease.

Next, she mixed the taupe and black colors from the Dolce & Gabbana The Eyeshadow Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Femme Fatale 100 and applied them to her crease. Then she smudged the black color along the bottom lash line.

Then came the waterlining! Mai rimmed the top and bottom lids of Jessica’s eyes with Becca Automatic Eye Pencil in Majorca.

And finally, she brushed on two coats of Diorshow Black Out Mascara.

Of course with such intense eyes, it’s important to keep the rest of the makeup subdued, so Mai used a subtle wash of tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Blushing Bride on the apples of Jessica’s cheeks and NARS Satin Lipstick in Tolède–a soft rose colour–to keep the lips fresh and subtle.

Brow Wow at Cannes Film Festival

Brow Wow Trend

Yesterday, the Cannes Film Festival started off with a bang–and a brow! Bold brows have been a trend for a while now, and several stars were really working theirs on the red carpet.

Singer Lana Del Rey used her highly defined, precisely shaped brows to accent her old Hollywood glamour look, and Indian actress Sonam Kapoor also went the very dark, very shaped route. The lovely Paz Vega had a slightly more natural–but still very bold–brow, and model Cara Delevingne fully embraced the trend with bold, natural, dark brows. Very high fashion!

To get the bold brow look at home, use a brow enhancer like Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Enhancing Serum Advanced to help your brows grow fuller. Then, an all-inclusive kit like Lorac Take a Brow provides brow powder to fill in sparse places and enhance the color, and wax, to keep the hairs in place.

Dramatic Eyes At The Met Gala: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Dramatic Eyes At The Met Gala The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Dramatic eyes were a big trend at last night’s Met Gala, and while some were absolutely stunning, others completely missed the mark. Everyone might not agree with me here, but I really feel that you can do punk and look attractive while doing it. Case in point, these three lovely ladies:

Good:
Hailee Steinfeld’s eyes were total showstoppers last night. Her green and black cat-eyed look was edgy but beautiful, and totally punk-esque.

Another real winner was the always-flawless Diane Kruger. Her silvery gray smokey eyes almost had an ombré effect, with the lightest silver at the inner corners and the darkest at the outer corners. Gorgeous!

And finally, we have Nina Dobrev, who sported an intensely winged upper lid and a silver-lined lower lid. Very high-fashion punk!

Bad:
You have to give Elle Fanning props for having fun, but her winged electric blue and pink eyeshadow is more little girl playing dress-up than fashion’s biggest night.

As for January Jones, her look reads far more alien warrior than punk! The disconnected triangular shape of her liner is quite harsh, and coupled with the grayed out eyebrows, she looks a little creepy.

Ugly:
Ginnifer Goodwin is always a fashion and beauty risk-taker, but this one simply did not pay off. The heavy black shadow from lash to brow, along with the heavily shaded brow may be daring, but it’s also unfortunate. The only place this look belongs is on a raccoon.

Beauty Trend Spotting: Light Pink Lips at The EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund Benefit

Light Pink Lips Trend

Much like red lips, light pink lips will never go out of style. And this spring, the so-sweet colour is a great complement to the fresh-faced trend we’re all trying to achieve.

But lest you think there’s no way you could pull off the hue, there are a wide variety of shades that fall into the ‘light pink’ category, and several of them were on display on the EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund Benefit.

Actress Amber Valetta went for a subtle stain that almost makes you wonder if her lips could be that colour naturally. Of course they aren’t, and you can recreate her soft wash of colour with COVERGIRL LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Blush Twist.

Julianne Hough opted for a pink so pale that it’s almost nude, and you can get a similar pinky-nude shade with just the slightest shine with Clinique’s Different Lipstick in Sugared Grapefruit.

Singer Kylie Minogue went for the sweetest pink of the three, and amped up the trend with a bolder wash of colour than the other two. Estee Lauder’s Pure Color lipstick in Power Pink is a very close match to this shade, and the name is quite accurate–pink is a power colour, too!

Carey Mulligan’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ Promo Tour Barely There Makeup Look

Carey Mulligan's Makeup - No Makeup 'The Great Gatsby' Fresh Faced Look

Despite the fact that her ‘The Great Gatsby’ character, Daisy Buchanan, is known for dramatic 20s beauty looks such as bold berry lipstick, smokey eyes and dazzlingly adorned hairbands and wraps, actress Carey Mulligan has been opting for a much more subtle approach to beauty during the press tour for the movie thus far.

Her makeup was so subtle at the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Ball and the Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada ‘The Great Gatsby’ Dresses Opening Exhibit–matte skin, a simple coat of mascara, no eyeshadow and a subtly glossed natural lip–that the barely there approach she took at the film’s world premiere in New York yesterday, almost looks bold! Almost. Makeup artist Georgie Eisdell gave Carey a slightly darker brow, a berry lip and lined her eyes a bit more heavily, all while staying well within the realm of ‘barely there’.

I think it was smart for Carey and Georgie to develop these subtle looks for the Gatsby tour, since the film has such an over-the-top opulence to it that anything dramatic could have come across quite costumey. Also, on the heels of Carey’s stunning but heavily made-up Vogue cover shoot, the subtle approach is a good change of pace for Carey.

Something tells me that Carey might continue these super subtle looks and then pull out all the stops at Cannes, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Carey Mulligan Makeup

To get Carey’s Gatsby World Premiere look, line your top lid only directly in the lashline with a soft pencil like Tarte EmphasEYES High Definition Eye Pencil in Brown.

Add slight contouring to your lids with warm brown tones like those in Dior’s 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Rosy Tan. Then, define your brows with Bobbi Brown’s Light Brow Kit for a strong, but natural effect, and finally, give your lips a subtle, matte hint of color with a matte pencil like NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Walkyrie.

Diane Kruger: The Newest Face for Chanel Beauty

Diane Kruger Chanel Beauty4Diane Kruger has been named as the newest face of Chanel Beauty.

This isn’t Diane’s first time as a beauty spokesperson. Back in 1996 she was the face of Chanel’s Allure fragrance; she’s since gone on to work with L’Oreal Paris in 2009.

Back in 2007 she was the face of Chanel’s Paris-Biarritz handbag advertising campaign, shot by Karl Lagerfeld. So she has plenty of experience working with the brand.

With her flawless complexion, natural beauty and her love of all things Chanel, the partnership really comes as no surprise – Diane has a knack of exuding that natural elegance that Chanel celebrates.
