Hair Trend Alert: The Modern Beehive

Hair Trend Alert The Modern Beehive

A huge trend in the 60s, the beehive is a classic, albeit dated, updo.

But recently, several actresses (and their hairstylists!) have been experimenting with the classic look and updating it in various ways.

‘Scandal’ actress Darby Stanchfield made her ‘hive modern by finishing it into a low ponytail.

Minka Kelly interpreted the look by only pulling up half her hair, and leaving the rest down in gorgeous, loose waves.

Rachel McAdams kept her beehive the most authentic–a complete updo–but still kept things fresh by keeping some pieces around her face loose.

Lily Collins (and hairstylist Mara Roszak) perhaps got the most creative, by extending the volume that’s synonymous with the beehive look down the back of the head, finally tucking the length of the hair under, at the nape of the neck. The black headband breaking up the height at the crown also adds interest.

Of course the key to any kind of beehive style is volume, volume, volume, and the best way to get that is teasing. Use Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Teasing Dust to add the gritty, voluminous texture you want, and also protect the hair. Then use a teasing brush like the 100% Boar Bristle Brush from Wigo to backcomb your hair into your big, beautiful hive.

Get the Look: Lily Collins on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon - Season 5Lily Collins has proven herself to be a total style and beauty icon, and she continually stuns with those perfect brows. I also really love that she’s been wearing dark lipstick lately, when everyone else is playing it safe with nudes and bright summery shades.

For Lily’s appearance on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’, makeup artist Molly Stern gave her a modern, edgy look.

First, she moisturized her skin with Lancome Bienfait Aqua Vital Lotion.

Then, she sparingly applied Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation to Lily’s gorgeous, porcelain complexion.

For the cheeks, Molly used YSL Crème de Blush in Silky Praline and then dusted Lancome Blush Subtil in Nectar Riche over the top.

Molly based Lily’s eyes with Shu Uemura Creamy Eyeshadow Primer in Light Pink 101, and then went to work with the Lancome Color Design Eye Brightening All-In-One 5 Shadow & Liner Palette. First she applied the pale pewter shade (far right, center) all over the lid, and then added a hint of pink with the rose shimmer shade (far left, center) on the inner lid.

Next, Molly applied the warm taupe (center) into the crease and under the lash line, and then for a final pop of brightness, she added Lancome Color Design Infinite 24H shadow in Unlimited Silver.

Then, she curled Lily’s lashes to open up the lash line and applied Lancome Show Mascara Hypnose Doll Lashes in So Black!.

Finally, Molly applied Lancome Color Design Sensational Effects Lipcolor in Coffee Date all over Lily’s lips, followed by a sheer application of Lancome Color Design Sensational Effects Lipcolor in En Vogue.

Oh, and those brows? They are all Lily. When you’re genetically blessed, you’re genetically blessed.
