Emilia Clarke’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Smoky Eyes

Makeup artist Dawn Broussard has shared how to get Emilia Clarke’s ‘Game of Thrones’ smoky eyes.

“Emilia’s Victoria Beckham dress had royal-blue tones, so we didn’t want it to contrast too much with her makeup. We wanted timeless glamour with a hint of something excitable” said Dawn.

First Dawn prepped Emilia’s skin with Bioré Acne Clearing Scrub to create the perfect canvas and a beautiful, luminous complexion.

The scrub gently cleanses and polishes skin without harsh side effects or over-drying.

A primer was massaged into the skin with a tissue used to remove the excess product.

Black liner was smudged on the upper and lower lash lines, followed by some silver and stone-grey eye shadow to create the smoky eye.

Black mascara coated the upper line to add some drama, with brown mascara on the lower lashes for a neater finish.

Apply a soft, matte bronzer to cheekbones, under the chin and on the nose, then blend a soft, baby pink blush upward into the bronzer. Finish with a pale pink highlighter that is a few shades lighter than the blush on the apples of the cheeks.

For the lips, select a colour a few hues darker than your natural lip tone and dab onto your fingertip to create a stain.

Karolina Kurkova’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party Beauty Look

Not many people can take a look from straight off the catwalk and make it work in real life, but for runway model Karolina Kurkova it is clearly no trouble at all. So on seeing Kurkova’s Atelier Versace dress for the Vanity Fair Oscar party, makeup artist Adam Breuchaud took inspiration from Pat McGrath’s makeup at the Versace Spring 2013 show and went for a look that similar but more wearable. Karolina also wore her hair slicked back just as Guido Palau had done for the catwalk models showing the dress last year.

Adam talked to us about the bold look created: ‘With Karolina I went with a dark smokey eye in navy and a dewy skin, ‘ he said. ‘Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Twilight 140 has an amazing deep navy blue that we chose to blend all over eyelid. I layered over it for dimension, then I tapped on a thin layer of the YSL Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils Long-Wear Cream Eyeliner in Sea Black, which is also a deep metallic blue, to give her eye that reflective shimmer. I choose to skip any sort of false lash and keep the focus on the navy color and shape of the eye.’

‘To achieve that glamorous glow, I highlighted her skin with the Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster in Ivory Luster and brushed on a light dusting of Dior Peachy Keen Blush on the apples of her cheek.’

‘We finished the look with a fleshy nude tone on her lip. Try Dior Nude Rouge Lipstick in Trench.’

A View to a Kill: Adele’s Outrageous Grammy Lashes

Music’s biggest divas were out in full force for the 55th Grammy Awards, but we only had eyes for Adele’s killer lashes.

The singer, who won her seventh Grammy for ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ and will perform her theme song for the James Bond movie ‘Skyfall’ at the Academy Awards next weekend, showed off a flawless, milky complexion, a nude lip and an awe-inducing set of eyelashes.

Michael Ashton, Adele’s personal make up artist for the last five years, was responsible for the look and told us: ‘When it comes to creating Adele’s red carpet looks, I like to take references from classic styling, films and iconic images then reinterpret them with my own aesthetic. This gives an end look that is polished and current, but also softly elegant and timeless.’

Here is how he did it: ‘First, prep and prime to perfection! My secret to creating picture perfect skin is to massage Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation into the face and add a sheer veil of YSL Touche Eclat near the inner tear ducts, through the t-zone and high planes.’

‘Brows are always so important to complete any make up look. I use a clear brow set to groom the shape and then fill and extend with Lancome Le Crayon Poudre brow pencil.’

‘Eye shadow is kept to a minimum for this look, with just a subtle highlighter on the brow bone, followed by gentle contouring through the socket. I used Lancome Colour Design Infinite in Continuous Creme as a base, then created dimension using Lancome Colour Design Eye Shadow Palette in Coral Crush.’

‘The real hero of this look is the liner and lashes. Using Maybelline Studio Gel Liner in Black, start on the inner corner of the eye and increase the width of liner as you extend towards the outer corner finishing with a flirty flick.’

‘To give the eyes a polished yet understated feel, I placed false lashes along the entire upper lashline before building up lash density with Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara top and bottom.’

‘To finish the look, I filled in the lip with Rouge d’Armani Lipstick in Beige 101 working from the middle of the mouth and creating the desired shaped using a lip brush. Blot off the excess before tidying edges using MyFace Lip Liner in Nude and apply a slick of Sisley White Diamond lip gloss to the centre of the lip.’

Beyonce’s Fierce Smoky Eye

Beyonce may already be gearing up for her Mrs Carter World Tour, but we are still obsessing over the fierce, yet neutral, make up she rocked during her high energy Super Bowl performance.

The singer went for a striking, smoky eye framed by a strong brow, but eschewed glitter or bright colour for a nude lip and flawless skin.

Makeup artist Danielle Vincent, creator of cult cosmetic skincare brand Kimiko, was at the SuperBowl doing touch-ups and evening make-up for attending A-listers and told us: ‘High on the request list was an ‘evening’ smoky eye for the pre-parties – not dissimilar from what Beyonce revealed at the half time show – and perfectly arched brows’.

‘I always start out by perfecting their skin with Kimiko’s Hydrating Tint SFP 20 and finishing it with The Lifting Pressed Powder.’

‘To achieve Beyonce’s intense and smoky eye, you have to start by laying down a neutral base so that darker colours will blend evenly. Try Kimiko’s Lifting Eye Shadow Bento Box in Imperial Nights, which contains exactly the shades needed to create the perfect smoky eye.’

‘Using The Essential Shadow Brush, take the lightest colour in the palette and apply it from lash line up to brow bone. Then, take the silver grey and blend it over the lid, right up to the crease. Take a clean brush and sweep it over the crease to ensure a seamless, blended look. Then take the rich black shade and starting from the outside corner of the eye, blend inwards over the lid and into the crease.’

‘For added drama, trace your eye with black eye liner (rim them if you can), and take a little of the Ninja sparkling black shade and trace your lash line, for tiny light reflections as you flutter your lashes. Finally, curl those lashes and layer with your favourite jet black mascara. Finally, define your brows with The Super Fine Brow Pencil Automatique and apply a slick of Sheer Tint and Lip Plumper in Golden Apricot.’

Beauty Trend: The Matte Red Lip

After an overwhelming amount of pretty, glossy nude lips at the Golden Globes, makeup artists turned back to the catwalk for inspiration at the SAG awards last weekend and came up with a bold matte red lip in a range of shades.

At the Jason Wu Spring 2013 show Diane Kendal for MAC had sent out models with cherry red lips saying: ‘The inspiration is Helmut Newton—this really strong, sexy woman with a bold mouth—quite glamorous,’ while at the Prada show Pat McGrath also saw red with ‘a strong overdrawn lip’ and at Burberry Wendy Rowe went for a striking forties-inspired red.

We spoke to makeup artist Gina Brooke, who has worked with Madonna since 2003 including four world tours and stars including Anne Hathaway, Gisele Bundchen and Gwen Stefani, about the look.

‘A red lip color was popular at the SAG awards because the color is classic and timeless,’ said Gina. ‘Wearing a red lip instantly exudes confidence, empowerment, femininity and of course sexuality.’

‘I love nothing more than a red lip. In fact, I can’t seem to leave the house without putting on red lips. It’s the quickest and easiest way to look polished without spending so much time applying the rest of my makeup.’

‘The best way to achieve the perfect red lip is by using a lip liner to define the shape of your lip it will also give you much more precision. I’ve been obsessed with Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in 8c, True Red, and Aqua Rouge lip color in 8, Iconic Red. I actually collaborated with make up for ever to crate Aqua Rouge 8 when searching for the perfect red lip for Madonna during her MDNA tour because its smudge proof, water proof and kiss proof.’

‘The biggest mistake women make is applying red lipstick to the corners of the mouth, in time, this can create a joker like appearance once the red starts to move. I prefer keeping it matte because the color stays in ace and allows you to have more control when wearing it all day.’
